To think if you call you child such a ridiculous name

southnownorth · 29/11/2018 15:57

They will get mocked at some point.

The child in question is called Abcde, pronouced ab-city.

Whilst it was very unkind to do it so the child can hear, I think it is the most ridiculous name I have ever seen.

It’s not in this country though, so hard to say how ridiculous it is.

I don't think it's hard at all. It is utterly stupid and downright cruel to call your child that.

That said, the employee shouldn't have posted a picture of the boarding card.

AdoraBell · 29/11/2018 16:51

The employer is in the wrong completely.

That said, how do you pronounce Abcde?

AdoraBell · 29/11/2018 16:52

Employee

bloody autocorrect.

Onemorefireball · 29/11/2018 16:53

As a pp says t's can be quite d like in America, so would be something like Absidy when spoken, which I quite like. I'd never spell it ABCDE though.

Whatever the child's name, that is appalling behaviour though and I hope the employee gets fired. It so far from acceptable to take a photo and put it on social media. In my job I'd be fired immediately if I shared someone's details like that!

BelindasRedPlasticHandcuffs · 29/11/2018 16:55

I might call my next YABU pronounced Yahbuh.

Pronounced Yaboo surely? Wink

Lazybonita · 29/11/2018 16:55

I know a child whose middle name is genuinely Danger...

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 29/11/2018 16:55

Abcidy sounds like obesity. Poor child. I’m sure she will demand to be called Mary before long.

southnownorth · 29/11/2018 16:57

I agree the employee shouldn't haven't posted the picture and should be sacked.

In jobs I have worked in I have heard some ridiculous names but would have kept nasty thoughts to myself.

PrincessWire · 29/11/2018 16:58

I knew it was going to be this when I saw the title. The airline employee should definitely be sacked but the mother needs to give her head a wobble and change that poor child's name.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 29/11/2018 17:00

Oh please! I know there's a post about people who describe others as snowflakes but really? Abcde... Ab-city!

With English/American as your first language? You chose to give your child a weird and whacky name and are now surprised that people find it weird and whacky?

I suppose the child will have to learn to be resilient. But what happens when she is old enough to know why people are laughing at her? When she knows her parents are fuckwits who put their own wishes to be unique over their child's need not to be set up as a focus of ridicule?

Fucking ridiculous!

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 29/11/2018 17:00

What’s the surname?

itswinetime · 29/11/2018 17:02

The employee was wrong but my first reaction would have been of look at the error the check in staff have made! Of course they shouldn't have made the child feel bad.

The family must have known a name like that would raise eyebrows at some point.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 29/11/2018 17:02

A perfectly normal, or stultifyingly boring, Redford depending on your snowflake status!

sue51 · 29/11/2018 17:03

The airline employee behaved disgracefully but the parents are unbelievably stupid to name thier child that. Complete fuckwits.

MiniDoofa · 29/11/2018 17:06

Someone told me 5 years ago they had met a child called Abcd. I honestly thought it was an urban myth but now seems likely to have been true.
Note unique spelling - was apparently pronounced a-buh-suh-duh
For goodness sake.

ChodeofChodeHall · 29/11/2018 17:07

It’s not a name

It is now! Grin

SingaporeSlinky · 29/11/2018 17:07

Apparently it’s pronounced ab-si-dee and an article says
“Although Abcde is an unusual name, it’s not unheard of. In 2014, Vocativ reported that over the past three decades, 328 baby girls have been given that name, 32 of whom were born in 2009
For what it’s worth, the name Abcde seems to be a primarily Hawaiian phenomenon. SSA data indicates that all five of the Abcdes named in 1990 were born there, which is especially interesting, considering that the modern Hawaiian alphabet doesn’t include the consonants b, c or d.”

NicePieceOfPlaid · 29/11/2018 17:09

There ought to be a law to protect children from the stupidity of their parents. I think there is in France.

WinterfellWench · 29/11/2018 17:12

Daft.

As has been said, people should not be allowed to give their kids stupid names. There are quite a few forenames that are plain flippin' stupid. Not just ones like abcde, qwerty, and hashtag! Yeah really, someone called their daughter 'hash fucking tag!'

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 29/11/2018 17:21

Some people really don't seem to actually like their children, do they? At least, if she'd been a boy and the parents were set on a run of consecutive letters from the alphabet, they could have called him Stu - and then encouraged him to get a job with KLM when he grew up (presumably commuting there and back in a VW).

It's natural instinct for most parents to want to do whatever they can to give their children as many advantages in life as possible, so why you'd do such a stupid, mean, unthinking thing as that is completely beyond me. You don't even need to spend time thinking about it - just giving them the most popular girl's/boy's name would be far better.

ladycarlotta · 29/11/2018 17:23

It's a silly name but that doesn't make it OK for gate stuff to mock the kid or share her boarding pass on social media. That was very unprofessional.

Cambalamb · 29/11/2018 17:23

Ridiculous. I would go do far as to say it's a form of neglect for that child's well being.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 29/11/2018 17:25

I might call my next YABU pronounced Yahbuh.

Pronounced Yaboo surely?

Only acceptable if you have twins and call the other one YANBU for balance.

lolaflores · 29/11/2018 17:25

What was it Frank zappa named his kids...moon unit? And David bowie did something a little...creative too .

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 29/11/2018 17:25

That name makes Balonz look almost normal - at least it's obvious how you would pronounce it!
