To think if you call you child such a ridiculous name

They will get mocked at some point.

The child in question is called Abcde, pronouced ab-city.

Whilst it was very unkind to do it so the child can hear, I think it is the most ridiculous name I have ever seen.

I have a name that when I was a child (late 70’s) adults would laugh out loud at. It was mortifying and I remember once my headteacher presenting an award to me in front of the whole school and asking me about 5 times what my real name is as he didn’t want my nickname printed on the trophy. Despite my insistence he refused to believe it was my name until my form teacher backed me up and he did an ‘okaaaay, well, that’s unusual’ while my while school tittered at me.

Anyway, last year my name was the 11th most popular in the country. So maybe 40 years from now they’ll be hundreds of little Abcd’s toddling around. It’s shitty for adults to take the piss out of a child’s name or anything else that a child has no control over.

RebootYourEngine · 29/11/2018 17:29

All i keep thinking is poor children. Why would you put your child through that.

FourFuxxakes · 29/11/2018 17:30

I knew a kid called chaos but with a strange spelling. She certainly lived up to her name...

MeVoila · 29/11/2018 17:34

If you give your child a ridiculous name, then you open them up to ridicule. It might not be right, but it's certain to happen. The child and parents will have a lifetime of sniggers and comments to deal with.

cadburysflake · 29/11/2018 17:35

Come ooooooon who names their child that?? Did they open the index of the baby book first and have a light bulb moment haha! It's just so ridiculous. That poor girl.

The person working for the airline was very silly to share on social media though, I mean I might have messaged my friends and said "you'll never guess what a customer's name was today...". Sharing it like that was wrong.

WhoGivesADamnForAFlakeyBandit · 29/11/2018 17:36

Do you know what Nick Knowles son TJ is actually called? dailym.ai/2DRtews. 13 middle names!

I also know someone who gave their DC the middle name Danger why

Purpleartichoke · 29/11/2018 17:37

Now I have Big Bird from Sesame Street stuck in my head singing “ab ce decky...”

It’s a ridiculous name, but that employee should still be fired. Mocking a child isn’t just unprofessional, it’s cruel.

mydogishot · 29/11/2018 17:39

I know someone who called their child Harley.

Their surname is Quinn.
Apparently it'll be a nickname...

My neighbours son is called Chase.

Instantly making him a follower.

eddiemairswife · 29/11/2018 17:42

Zowie Bowie is now called Duncan Jones.

joinedjustfordw · 29/11/2018 17:44

BathFullOfEels What is your name, if you don't mind me asking?

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 29/11/2018 17:47

I used to work in a place where a not so often visitor was caller Ryan Ayr.

IKillEveryBloodyThreadIPostOn · 29/11/2018 17:49

The airline employee should be sacked. Extremely unprofessional and such an arsehole thing to do. Poor child.

BishopBrennansArse · 29/11/2018 17:52

@WorraLiberty Living Proof Dad has lead in his pencil? Grin

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 29/11/2018 17:52

I’m sure it’s not been the first time and it won’t be the last. What exactly did the parents expect?

mydogisthebest · 29/11/2018 17:55

Well I have heard some pretty awful and stupid names but that really beats them all.

The child will need to get used to people making comments or laughing at that ridiculous name.

I do sometimes think you should not be able to call a child anything you want. You never used to be. My parents wanted to call me a certain name (not even unusual sounding) and it was refused when they went to register it

LanaorAna2 · 29/11/2018 17:58

Presumably the airline employee thought they were harmlessly sharing a joke. Why choose a yoo-neek, like, name if you don't want people to notice that it's yoo-neek, like?

And no, no one can dictate that others only write nice things about them or their appellations.

CuckooCuckooClock · 29/11/2018 17:58

I'm a teacher so I've come across a few but abcde is amazingly cruel.
Currently I teach someone with the same first name and last name. Poor thing.

brizzledrizzle · 29/11/2018 17:59

Its a completely ridiculous name but no matter what the name is the man was wrong to ridicule her.

WTF were her parents thinking?

CuckooCuckooClock · 29/11/2018 18:00

I think in France you have to give biblical names or something restrictive like that.

grumiosmum · 29/11/2018 18:01

I can see how if you said it in a certain way it could also sound like Obesity.

Arff.

InfantaSybilla · 29/11/2018 18:01

My step-aunt's cousin's girlfriend's dog sitter's niece is called L-a Grin (I'm joking of course)

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 29/11/2018 18:03

I used to work for a nursery. I used to love the new term with the weird and wonderful names. Some were lovely but some were bonkers.

RedDeadRoach · 29/11/2018 18:06

I saw one of those American reality shows where what I think was a child (I hope it was a dog) named spurgeon was having their birthday. I didn't watch it so i can't be sure. But abcde is probably less bad than spurgeon.

KungFuPandaWorks · 29/11/2018 18:07

I was watching paradise run on Nick a while back, and a child had Abcde as his name. I actually rewound it and paused the TV believing it must have been a mistake or I was reading it wrong. Nope the presenters and everyone else was calling him Abcde.

Cocolepew · 29/11/2018 18:07

I saw a comnent on facebook that said "her brother Qwerty was also ready to board" Grin
