To think if you call you child such a ridiculous name

They will get mocked at some point.

The child in question is called Abcde, pronouced ab-city.

Whilst it was very unkind to do it so the child can hear, I think it is the most ridiculous name I have ever seen.

I have an unusual nam, so I'm not against them but this one is ridiculous.

My DD was given s family name and I worried it might be too old fashioned. She started school as one of 3 in that year with the name.

I guess all of you who are so convinced the child will be bullied are likely the same ones who mock people.

Another saying you'd be wrong HmmI grew up with a very common name (lots of "driveninsane's" throughout my school career). I was a child that was often bullied (not over my name) and tended to gravitate to other children with the same experience. A lot I saw were bullied because of their name. Or rather, their name was used as a means to bully them.

I would never choose to mock or bully someone, certainly not for their name. At the end of the day, they didn't choose their name anyway! But that doesn't mean I can't see that it really does happen.

Have a go at me if you want but I feel sorry for these children who are going to be the Sharon/ Tracey/ Paul and Andrews of the next generation.
It's not about having the weirdest name out there, just putting a bit of all round thought into a name and seeing your child as an individual or having the guts as a parent to move perceptions on a bit.

Look around you - when you see people with successful (traditional) careers, how many of them have an unusual name and how many just a bog standard common to their age group name? The Sharons & Tracey's of that generation were not hindered by such names. Your CV will speak for itself - but if you have a ridiculous name on there (such as Abcde) you may find the recruiter passes over it because they either think it is a piss take or they have preconceptions about the type of person they are (I would tend to presume that someone who named their child something weird would also be the sort of parent that never disciplined or said no to their child and have as such raised the worst kind of person to become a good employee - I don't work in recruiting though).

^I guess all of you who are so convinced the child will be bullied are likely the same ones who mock people.

Well, you'd be wrong. I'm convinced she will be bullied/teased/mocked because I grew up with a daft name.^

Double copy! Exactly what Soupy said!

Anyone who said the first bit obviously wasn’t lumbered with a trusty tease/bully/mock worthy name.

@onegift I am currently pregnant with a little girl and love the name Freya, we live in a small area with a small school and there isn't another Freya here. I think it's a little harsh to say they won't be unique if they have a 'standard' name. None of my children have 'out there' names but they are all popular, do well at school and all round good human beings who stand out for their effort and determination

"Your CV will speak for itself - but if you have a ridiculous name on there (such as Abcde) you may find the recruiter passes over it..."

100% accurate I'm afraid. It's not good that someone is judged on their name (either from a class, racial or gender basis) but it happens and having a bizarre name like ABCDE will simply be an extra challenge for the applicant if the recruiter is stuck wondering is this a typo? How on earth do I pronounce this and wft anyway? This poor child will spend her life having to overcome an instant first impressions based on her name.

Zimlu · 07/12/2018 20:11

Personally it is a ridiculous name. Regardless of the social media shame which is of course a go-to. I still think that the parents should have thought s bit more about the future consequences when naming a child "abcde".... no linguistic rule fits that name!!!! Poor kid.
