To think if you call you child such a ridiculous name

They will get mocked at some point.

The child in question is called Abcde, pronouced ab-city.

Whilst it was very unkind to do it so the child can hear, I think it is the most ridiculous name I have ever seen.

I knew what this would be about before I opened the thread - another follower of APILN I assume?

RomanyRoots · 29/11/2018 18:23

You'd think the woman would have more sense, she must have been laughed at for Traci

lovetherisingsun · 29/11/2018 18:25

A girl I knew had the middle name of Starry Night Sky.

SingaporeSlinky · 29/11/2018 18:27

RedDeadRoach yes, the Duggar family from 19 Kids and Counting. One of the grandkids is called Spurgeon, named after a British pastor called Charles Sourgeon from the 1800s. I’m embarrassed I know this.

SingaporeSlinky · 29/11/2018 18:28

*Charles Spurgeon

While the Gate Agent was bang out of order.
It does have to be said. What were were her parents thinking of. It's not even different but nice. It's ridiculous.
And we know no one has the right to tease or pass comment but people will do. Its the way the world is.
Its not even spelled phonetically either. HTF does Abcde spell Ab City.
I don't get it. I agree with the poster who said it sounds like a gym club

southnownorth · 29/11/2018 18:34

Doesn’t the registrar in the UK have the right to refuse a name if it is to stupid? I wonder if they have the same in the US. Maybe not!

They should have spelt it Abcideigh.
After all, If you're gonna be yooneek. You might as go the whole hog.
If something's worth doing and all that.Grin

stayingaliveisawayoflife · 29/11/2018 18:35

Yep some American fundamentalist Christian families go for interesting names. There is a little girl called Heistheway!

Caprisunorange · 29/11/2018 18:36

It’s France where registrars Veto a name. But identifying but I have a friend who wasn’t given a name and still registered in the U.K.

Echobelly · 29/11/2018 18:36

I did see a web photo doing the rounds of social media about 'share this to help spread awareness of the bullying I've experienced' and the poor child was called 'Charisma' , so I did feel sorry for her!

HoldMeCloserTonyDanza · 29/11/2018 18:37

When you name an airport after John Wayne, this is what happens!

RiddleyW · 29/11/2018 18:38

Zowie Bowie is now called Duncan Jones.

He always was called Duncan Jones - Zowie was (and is) his middle name.

ALemonyPea · 29/11/2018 18:42

Wonder if her middle name is Onetwothree?

If they wanted her to be called Abcidee, then they should haven spelt it that way. Idiots.

ForalltheSaints · 29/11/2018 18:42

The French used to have a list of approved names, which they may have dropped given migration from countries where the first language is not in western alphabet. In a mono-cultural country this would have my support.

Spudlet · 29/11/2018 18:45

She'll probably end up charging her name to something like Susan or Jane at the earliest opportunity. Poor kid!

Downtheroadfirstonleft · 29/11/2018 18:47

If you think that's bad, have a look at this!

Grumpasaurus · 29/11/2018 18:49

I once worked sales with a girl who called her daughter elemeno: pronounced: L M N O.

She was an attention seeking twat and I felt so sorry for her daughter growing up.

ALemonyPea · 29/11/2018 18:51

Ahem, Grumpasaurus, it's pronounced Alemonypea, obviously, stop mocking my name!

SchadenfreudePersonified · 29/11/2018 18:52

There ought to be a law to protect children from the stupidity of their parents. I think there is in France.

A priest can refuse to christen a child with a name they feel will leave them open to abuse, but of course, that doesn't mean that they can't be registered with a daft name (though they can't be registered with an obscene one).

MrPoppysGF · 29/11/2018 18:53

I read that during Victorian times a child might be named according to a situation. One boy was sadly called "Just Not Wanted", as the family was too poor for another child. Another boy was called "Friendless".

CheeseTheDay · 29/11/2018 18:54

The parents probably thought they were being original. They weren't. I remember reading about an Abcde over a decade ago. It was fucking ridiculous then, and remains so.

It's up there with parents who name their daughters Espn (like the US sports network), which is pronounced Es-pen.

All idiots.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 29/11/2018 19:25

MrPoppy - that's just heartbreaking.

Malbecfan · 29/11/2018 19:26

In Iceland, apparently there are set names that you can use. You have to get permission for anything not on the list. I have colleagues whose first son was born there and they wanted to give him a name from the Old Testament (nothing too outrageous I promise but I don't want to out anyone). It was not on the approved list. Dad is Icelandic but mum is British and only by appearing before the panel and stating that it was a "normal" name in English, were they able to register their boy with their chosen name.
