to think that Labour's stance on moped ramming is stupid

The Metropolitan Police have been knocking over moped muggers with their cars, and releasing the footage as a deterrent. It's a fantastic idea which has cut moped crime dramatically.

Predictably, the Shadow Home Secretary has said 'it shouldn't be legal for anyone'.

Why is Labour's instinct always to side with the scumbag criminals over the victims, the police and the decent people?

Are we seriously expected to accept reassurances from the Met Police on this subject with everything we have seen reported in recent years? Seriously?

That’s an argument against police powers altogether.

I have reservations about police ‘canteen culture’ and I think we should keep a close eye on what they are allowed to do. But this isn’t one to object to.

I said upthread that if I was on a jury trying a police officer for an offence created by knocking over a moped-riding violent suspect trying to get away I’d acquit unless there was a good reason not to. If a police driver had no good reason to knock over a moped rider or did it with obviously excessive speed they deserve all they get.

Do you have a problem with that? Seriously?

jasjas1973 · 29/11/2018 13:46

Hesta54 what part of "its not excusing their despicable behavior but there is cause and effect" don't you understand?

TwistedStitch
it's a harm reduction tactic and it IS reducing crime

You said its reducing crime NOT a specific crime, My point is that reducing moped attacks is not at all certain to reduce overall levels of violent offences.
So, if these thugs now take up mugging at knife point instead? or doing even more county lines drug dealing? more car jacks etc etc

You need to address the causes not just the specific crime, in other words a joint approach.

TwistedStitch · 29/11/2018 13:46

Again they are not mowing down defendents outside court to save the cost of a trial, they are using a tactic if it is deemed necessary to prevent harm to the public. Nobody is doing this to punish criminals.

Craft1905 · 29/11/2018 13:48

But yes a few well off chaps get their phones nicked on a night out in Islington and yeeha lets run those fuckers down.

Yes, because people who work damn hard and get to buy a nice phone and live in a nice area deserve to have it taken off them by some lowlife scumbag who hasn't done a stroke of work in their life, at school or since leaving.

So far in London police have rammed and knocked off their scooters about 90 of these little shits, and not a single one has suffered a serious injury. Yet the rate of scooter crime has fallen dramatically since implementation, when innocent people were being seriously injured. A woman had to have her arm amputated after scooter thieves snatched her handbag which was on her shoulder, and dragged her along the road.

This is a public safety initiative, and I'm all for it.

AtlasShrugged · 29/11/2018 13:48

not excusing their despicable behavior but there is cause and effect" don't you understand? by saying that you're excusing their behaviour.

KissingInTheRain · 29/11/2018 13:48

That’s a counsel of despair.

TeaForDad · 29/11/2018 13:51

I agree with the police being able to nudge moped riders off.
As a motorbike owner I have seen first hand the brazen attempts to nick bikes by gangs who KNOW the police cannot catch them.

puzzledlady · 29/11/2018 13:51

I agree - I’ve been assaulted and mugged before, it’s not very nice. I fully support what the met are doing.

TwistedStitch · 29/11/2018 13:53

You said its reducing crime NOT a specific crime

Seriously?

jasjas1973 · 29/11/2018 13:54

AtlasShrugged - no its cause and effect.

KissingInTheRain - the reality of wasted and hopeless lives, unless the cycle is broken, these people will have kids and their kids will commit more crime and so on.......

they won't stop because you told them so, just move onto less risky crimes.

KissingInTheRain · 29/11/2018 13:57

jasjas

Why arrest someone on foot who commits a violent mugging? They’ll only take up some other crime.

Nicknacky · 29/11/2018 13:59

jasjas Oh well, the police might as well not bother arresting anyone then. What’s the point?

Miscible · 29/11/2018 14:00

London is turning feral

No, it isn't, NoThankYouHun. I work in London every day and have yet to come across feral conduct.

These "kids" need to learn they can't just go out doing whatever they like mugging, robbing, stabbing, killing INNOCENT people.

Link me to reports of scooter riders killing people?

Hesta54 · 29/11/2018 14:01

jasjas1973 How will the cycle be broken by going easy on criminals, tools being stolen from vans is at epidemic levels where I live, because they now the punishment, if caught doesn’t fit the crime, the devastation for The tradesmen and the cost of replacement of tools

doubleshotespresso · 29/11/2018 14:01

Do you have a problem with that? Seriously?

YES Yes I do. The knee-jerk, short-sighted-ness and venom on this thread is disturbing. I love London but fear for all Londoners if this is the direction we are all being led in, truly frightening.

AtlasShrugged · 29/11/2018 14:03

Hesta54 · 29/11/2018 14:03

doubleshotespresso What is your answer to it then? Because nothing is working at the moment and over the years is getting steadily worse

Craft1905 · 29/11/2018 14:05

Link me to reports of scooter riders killing people?

Abdul Samad, aged 28, stabbed to death in June by moped riding cunts for his iPhone.

Await your apology.

KissingInTheRain · 29/11/2018 14:05

doubleshot

You seriously have a problem with the police catching suspects of violent crime who do all they can to evade the law?

Did you bother to consider what I wrote?

OK then.

TwistedStitch · 29/11/2018 14:06

Here's an acid attack that left one victim with life changing injuries.

TwistedStitch People will be telling you they were just bored, hard done by , wouldn’t hurt a fly type people

TwistedStitch · 29/11/2018 14:08

It amazes me how posters don't even do a cursory google before making their pronouncements on threads.

Miscible · 29/11/2018 14:10

To everyone who is against this what exactly do you suggest? They use mopeds because they can evade the police easily on them.

Adequate police funding, the use of motor bikes or scooters that can pursue mopeds effectively.
