Two black cleaners? Really?

Fresta · 27/11/2018 20:57

Watching 'How to Spend it Well' on ITV.

AIBU to think that having a load of kids make a mess and then getting two black women in to clean up after them is not really an image we should be reinforcing?

What were they thinking?

Why women cleaners? Why black women? Why couldn't it have been a man and a woman?

OP posts:

@Betsy86 yeah they were. Can't remember the name of the programme... think it was "extreme cleaners" where they go in and clean properties in extreme circumstances (hoarders) etc

It def wasn't called "black extreme cleaners" 🙄 honestly... have a day off people

WooYa · 27/11/2018 21:28

As Betsy86 says - they did a show a while ago about extreme cleaning/hoarders. That's probably the reason they did the show. Not because they are women who are black.

Neverender · 27/11/2018 21:29

Totally agree with AnnieOH1

Bluerussian · 27/11/2018 21:29

Ah, I get it now. Well the fact they are black is neither here nor there really.

I'll see if I can find their number, know someone who could do with their help.......

Neverender · 27/11/2018 21:29

I'm actually horrified you even noticed. Why the heck can't people just be people? The world is going backwards.

StateofIndependance · 27/11/2018 21:31

Obviously for the OP this brought to mind images of black oppression along the lines of The Help and I expect she wasn't the only one who felt like this. I think it's different though. These women run a cleaning business. They're oppressed in the way that all black, working class women are, but that doesn't mean they shouldn't be allowed to clean and be paid for cleaning on a TV show.

FascinatingCarrot · 27/11/2018 21:31

Lets sack them and give two white males the job. Would that make you feel better on their unsolicited behalf? I'm sure they will love you paying their bills.
Confused

Doghorsechicken · 27/11/2018 21:32

So if you need a cleaner in your home you’re not allowed to hire women or black people?

New rule: only employ white men, got it 👍

PerpendicularVincent · 27/11/2018 21:33

They were 2 people doing a job, their skin colour and sex are irrelevant.

Hunlife · 27/11/2018 21:33

My first thought was “I’ll bet they’ve got their own business and are doing a lot better than most”.

candlefloozy · 27/11/2018 21:36

All I was concerned about was that washable pen not coming out of the sofa!!

Sunhill4 · 27/11/2018 21:36

2 black cleaners do clean my workplace. Does it make it more acceptable because they are both men??

Betsy86 · 27/11/2018 21:37

kimmy3001 that was the show extreme cleaners and they did a good job and had alot of laughs i was hoping to see more of them on tv and tonight there they were!

I did just snort at extreme black cleaners though Grin imagine the uproar from the professionally offended chill out folk Wine

Deathgrip · 27/11/2018 21:38

Love all the posters who pretend that racial equality isn’t a thing, and actually who even notices colour since all good people are colour blind...

Give it a rest.

Purpleartichoke · 27/11/2018 21:39

Perhaps Britain is doing a better job than America, but here, we are very conscious that the people doing all the work we don’t want to do are not white. In our city that is overwhelmingly white, it is very obvious. So obvious that I had to start explaining the economic consequences of inter generational racism to my DD when she was 3 because she noticed the ridiculous divide even at that age. Portrayal in media is one of the ways people are trying to combat historic stereotypes because this needs to change going forward. It’s a difficult line to walk. Portraying reality vs portraying things the way they should be.

Deathgrip · 27/11/2018 21:39

Racial inequality, obviously.

LagunaBubbles · 27/11/2018 21:39

Oh for goodness sake, talk about looking for reasons to be professionally offended! Are black women not allowed to work as cleaners now?

starzig · 27/11/2018 21:41

Why does gender or colour matter OP? It is 2 cleaners doing a job.

dworky · 27/11/2018 21:46

I love the way some posters are pretending racism doesn't exist.
How quaint!

dworky · 27/11/2018 21:47

Oooh, didn't see your post Deathgrip

Monestasi · 27/11/2018 21:49

Oh good grief!!

My company hires two white women. And?

Though one had an accent. Hmm

cheshireagain · 27/11/2018 21:49

I thought the same...

SheCameFromGreeceSheHadaThirst · 27/11/2018 21:49

Is the OP cringing in a corner somewhere? Grin

It's a curious argument, isn't it? You shouldn't employ a cleaner who happens to be black, because that's racist Confused

AtlasShrugged · 27/11/2018 21:50

I love the way some posters are pretending racism doesn't exist. I love how some posters get their jollies being outraged on behalf of others
