Morning drinking

I'm curious to know thoughts on this. I'm completely okay with it but interested to see what people think.

Once and sometimes twice a week at 10am I will crack open a bottle of wine and have 2 or 3 glasses over a few hours. I'll Read, catch up on some tv and other stuff and just relax and enjoy.

I do this because this is the only time I get to myself while the kids are in school and before everyone gets home around 4. I don't drink in the evening or at the weekends. Probably having around 16 units a week.

I know if I was to tell anyone this they'd think I had a problem and needed a drink first thing in the morning, but I don't.It's about 4 or 5 days before I'll have a glass of wine again since the last one.

What are you're thoughts?

I don’t find it interesting, probably because I’d absolutely hate to do it

But I can see that others find it so (interesting that is)

GimmeGimmeHellYeah · 24/11/2018 15:55

"I do this because this is the only time I get to myself while the kids are in school and before everyone gets home around 4."

So you drink whenever you can that you have time to yourself?
Yeah, that's a problem, imo.

Pimpernell · 24/11/2018 15:55

When I lived in Spain (last century) having a carajillo - espresso with a good slug of brandy) or two on the way to work was totally normal.

A pint with lunch during the working day is a thing you often see in England but it isn't as common elsewhere.

nottellingyou101 · 24/11/2018 15:56

It is the whole story. I was just wondering. Some are saying no way and others are saying what does it matter. For the foreseeable future I'm not going to stop, circumstances may change that but It wouldn't bother me a bit. I'd go back to a few in the evening. I just wanted thoughts and it's interesting to say why not, what difference does it make and accidents can happen at time.

I know it's very unusual but it really works for me apart from having to attend an accident. I don't drive so would get a taxi anyway.

This doesn't sound OK to me but I drink very very little, maybe only twice a month on average - I can't imagine anything worse than alcohol in the morning, it would make me feel sleepy & sluggish and as if I didn't want to do anything all day!

MissionItsPossible · 24/11/2018 15:59

I wouldn’t think it strange but only because I used to work odd hours and me and a colleague, on Tuesdays at ten o’clock in the morning, would go to the pub and have a few drinks. It was our equivalent of Friday after work drinks.

GimmeGimmeHellYeah · 24/11/2018 15:59

Interesting choice of username...

Rhiannon13 · 24/11/2018 15:59

The fact that you've carefully worked out the optimum time to consume alcohol is troubling.

I agree with this. Very possibly alcoholic behaviour. Not all alcoholics drink every day but planning when to drink is a very big warning sign (I speak from personal experience). You say you're not, but in reality it's possible you're still drunk when the kids get home when really they deserve your full, clear-headed attention. I presume you hide the bottle before they get in?

GaryBaldbiscuit · 24/11/2018 16:00

its wrong and you know it

3luckystars · 24/11/2018 16:03

Its funny. There are 'rules', you are right.

Its all alcohol and you should ask why you need it to fully relax.

Like if i said to you i needed a belt of scotch every morning at 8am to relax, what would you think.

Its all alcohol. You don't need it, its poisonous really.

ElspethFlashman · 24/11/2018 16:04

it really works for me

Reminds me of that Sheryl Crow song: "I like a good beer buzz early in the morning"

CardsforKittens · 24/11/2018 16:04

I can't imagine wanting or enjoying wine at 10am. I don't think it's necessarily a problem if you're not drinking excessive quantities of alcohol and if it's not having any kind of negative impact on your life or on people around you. But it really is quite strange to drink alcohol almost exclusively in the morning.

nottellingyou101 · 24/11/2018 16:06

Username was just random. Not telling you my name.

Bottle goes in the bin like bottles do if it's empty or back in the shelf if not.

I do plan it, so yes I agree on that part, but it's planned around when I can get day to myself and have nothing major to do so I can fully relax and kick back.

My units have not gone up at all. I like to stay within the 14 or just over

My kids get the full attention from me and I am in no way drunk when they get back at sometimes 4 or 5.

I presume you hide the bottle before they get in?

I'm interested in whether the OP has a partner, and whether they're upfront with them about the 10am glass (or three) of wine, or whether it is concealed drinking.

Ginkythefangedhellpigofdoom · 24/11/2018 16:07

See for me if you were doing that as well as drinking within "socially" acceptable times then it would be worrying but from what I can see, you have chosen to do what most people do on a Friday or Saturday dinner/ evening except you do it on a (for example) Tuesday and Thursday morning/lunch.

I'm not sure I'd be worried but then I only have a snapshot on a forum so I can't really judge can I.

OlennasWimple · 24/11/2018 16:07

Unless it's Christmas or you are on holiday, drinking at 10am is not OK

DontDribbleOnTheCarpet · 24/11/2018 16:09

Are you hiding your drinking at all? I mean from your family and friends. That would concern me, but if you aren't driving and you aren't a danger to anyone else then I can't give a solid reason why not. It makes me feel uncomfortable though, which is obviously my problem and not yours.

ohplop · 24/11/2018 16:09

I would just feel really really terrible if I did this Envy

nottellingyou101 · 24/11/2018 16:10

3luckystars Why do people have a bottle of wine after work. I agree with you. Why do I need wine, why do other people.

I enjoy the buzz, that's why I do it. I don't get any time to myself if I did it at any other time and a few in the evening messes with sleep and makes me feel groggy in the morning.

I like the buzz, I like being alone and being able to do what I want e.g Filly relax with a glass like people do in the evening.

Ginkythefangedhellpigofdoom · 24/11/2018 16:11

I will say though I have known shift and night shift workers drink at odd times because their night time was in the day and their days were at night.

diddl · 24/11/2018 16:14

Why wine though-the taste or the alcohol?

I mean there's loads of non alcoholic stuff that you could drink whilst alone & catching up with stuff.

mirialis · 24/11/2018 16:14

My friend does this. She drinks less than I do and - like you - around the recommended units per week. I think I would drink less if I followed her pattern to be honest (much easier to sink the whole bottle in the evening than to have the odd glass in the daytime). She wakes up at 5-30/6 each day so 10-30/11 is "lunch time" for her I guess, and she is having a cup of herbal tea, bath and bed by 8-30/9.

PoisonousSmurf · 24/11/2018 16:15

Sorry, but i'd think you were a total piss head! What if there was an emergency at school and you had to go in?
Tongues will start wagging...

BeardedMum · 24/11/2018 16:15

I could never drink wine for breakfast and would fall asleep around lunchtime if I did that. I don’t think its anything wrong in drinking alone and if you arr within safe units I don’t see a problem.

BakedBeans47 · 24/11/2018 16:15

Sorry I like wine too but sitting around the house drinking from just after the school run is very strange. Do you never need to go out anywhere? What if they were ill and you needed to pick them up? Do they not have activities after school that you need to drive to
