Morning drinking

I'm curious to know thoughts on this. I'm completely okay with it but interested to see what people think.

Once and sometimes twice a week at 10am I will crack open a bottle of wine and have 2 or 3 glasses over a few hours. I'll Read, catch up on some tv and other stuff and just relax and enjoy.

I do this because this is the only time I get to myself while the kids are in school and before everyone gets home around 4. I don't drink in the evening or at the weekends. Probably having around 16 units a week.

I know if I was to tell anyone this they'd think I had a problem and needed a drink first thing in the morning, but I don't.It's about 4 or 5 days before I'll have a glass of wine again since the last one.

What are you're thoughts?

If you think drinking alcohol is, on the whole, because of social conditioning and not because of the pleasant effect, I find it a bit bizarre that you drink at all Confused

Hezz · 24/11/2018 16:38

Needing a buzz and using alcohol to relax at 10am would concern my DB if one of his patients were to disclose that.

JacquesHammer · 24/11/2018 16:38

*What about people who go to business lunches? Have a works Christmas lunch?

And then do school pick up at 3pm?*

Then I wouldn’t drink.

bbcessex · 24/11/2018 16:39

I don’t mind that I smell of wine, I suppose, because I can be open that I’ve been drinking.

I guess it would be different if it were something I wanted to keep quiet..

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 24/11/2018 16:39

It’s not the quantity its the timing OP ! I’d be ruined after a morning drink

SpaceCadet4000 · 24/11/2018 16:40

Honestly, both DH and I have family members with alcohol problems, so this pattern would have me worrying if a friend or family member told me about it. That doesn't mean I think it is wrong, as it's different for everyone and experiences mean I'm probably over sensitive.

SIL is now a very dysfunctional alcoholic and used to spend her Friday day drinking moderate amounts before picking up the kids from daycare. It escalated when her partner left her and she lost her job.

Looking back, there were signs that it was a dysfunctional pattern. For example, she wouldn't do anything else on a Friday even if it was a "relaxing" or fun activity. Friday evenings she was more prone to petty arguments or losing her temper with the kids. She would plan what she was drinking in advance (e.g. half coded notes in her wall cal), and would get upset if she couldn't get to the shops on Thursday.

Heartofglass21 · 24/11/2018 16:41

Do you smell of wine? When you've drunk wine?

Of course you do. Even garlic and perfume won't disguise the fact you've had a lunchtime tipple. But there's a big difference between a glass of wine at lunch with others, and necking the best part of a bottle of wine alone on the sofa in the morning.

Pimpernell · 24/11/2018 16:42

I read that in a Hyacinth Bucket voice. 'Sheridan's a doctor now, don't you know!'.

I don't want to sound sanctimonious.
I also like wine and drink more of it than I should.
But if you were my friend I would be concerned about you and I would also think the "once and sometimes twice a week" was a lie.

bbcessex · 24/11/2018 16:43

OP.. if your children are older then this might not apply, but I wouldn’t have allowed my DC to have play dates at your home if I knew this was something you did..

Might not be relevant to you of course, but essentially, whichever way you look at it, having 2 or 3 glasses means you aren’t on full alert, which i suppose is why most people time it so if they drink , they do it when they’re less likely to be required to be actively responsible..

WhiteCoyote · 24/11/2018 16:44

Do you feel anxious at the thought of not having it?
If you decide to not have wine one day, will you be thinking about it non stop until you have it?

If so then yes it’s a problem. If not and you could go completely cold turkey tomorrow with no repercussions then it’s not a problem. The only person who can answer honestly is you.

Rhiannon13 · 24/11/2018 16:44

Had no reason to mention it

Slippery slope.

WhatToDoAboutWailmerGoneRogue · 24/11/2018 16:45

You shouldn’t need wine to relax and you shouldn’t be drinking it for a buzz, let alone drinking so early in the day.

This is indicative of a very deep problem that you need to fix before this gets even more out of hand.

dontalltalkatonce · 24/11/2018 16:48

But if you were my friend I would be concerned about you and I would also think the "once and sometimes twice a week" was a lie.

Wow, with 'friends' like you, who needs enemies? I couldn't ditch any so-called friend fast enough if I found out they thought I was a liar Hmm.

Pimpernell · 24/11/2018 16:48

you shouldn’t be drinking it for a buzz

Why not?

Pimpernell · 24/11/2018 16:50

What are the acceptable reasons for drinking alcohol?

mirialis · 24/11/2018 16:50

Cantuse - we have to go on the fact that the OP has started this thread anonymously and is telling the truth about the frequency and units. What's the point of responding otherwise?

As I said in an earlier post, my friend does this. 2-3 glasses is not "the best part of a bottle of wine". There are 6 glasses in a bottle. I definitely drink more wine than my friend - both frequency and number of units - but I don't really do "lone drinking" as I don't have the units to spare, and I do during "socially acceptable" hours. Her liver and alcohol expenditure are definitely going to be in better shape than mine. I couldn't drink at 10 am because I don't get up at 5am.

Flowerpot2005 · 24/11/2018 16:51

I do kind of get what you mean.

You're in your free time where it's totally uninterrupted & you can relax. When the family is home you don't have any down time. If it works for you & that's all you have then fair enough.

Bouledeneige · 24/11/2018 16:52

Yes I would think it odd in the morning. I'm not really a fan of drinking during the day at all but make an exception for Christmas and the occasional weekend lunch. I do think it has something to do with being fully capacitated during the day. I think I'd feel sleepy and a bit shitty after lunch if I'd been drinking at 10am.

But I disagree with the social rules comment about drinking alone. Its all very well for happily marrieds to say this but I'm on my own this evening (with late teens in the house) and I'm planning to have some cava watching Strictly and then maybe a glass of red with my dinner. I didn't have anything last night, but did have some wine out with a friend on Thursday night. Why is one okay and the other not? Oh because I am stupid enough not to have a partner to share my Saturday evening with?

Wannabeyorkshirelass · 24/11/2018 16:52

You have a problem and I think you know it.

SheCameFromGreeceSheHadaThirst · 24/11/2018 16:55

MN'ers don't drink, you know

Plenty of MNers drinks.

Very few of them drink at 10am on a weekday morning and lie to their partner about it.

dontalltalkatonce · 24/11/2018 16:57

What are the acceptable reasons for drinking alcohol?

Why does anyone need one? What's an acceptable reason for eating cake or biscuits? Or meat? Or lots of carbs? Some people enjoy the taste of it. So what. It's hardly shooting heroin.

MrsStrowman · 24/11/2018 16:57

It's a bit concerning that you have a listen of only being able to unwind with alcohol any kind of solo drinking is to be kept an eye on, as a one off I'd not think much about it, but this is an unusual pattern

MawkishTwaddle · 24/11/2018 16:57

Ew, I wouldn't fancy it.

Which is weird, because I bloody love it most of the time Blush

It's odd, but only because it's not the social norm. Just go steady, OP, and if you start pouring Merlot on your muesli, it might be time to knock it off.

MrsStrowman · 24/11/2018 16:57

You have a pattern (not listen)
