Morning drinking

I'm curious to know thoughts on this. I'm completely okay with it but interested to see what people think.

Once and sometimes twice a week at 10am I will crack open a bottle of wine and have 2 or 3 glasses over a few hours. I'll Read, catch up on some tv and other stuff and just relax and enjoy.

I do this because this is the only time I get to myself while the kids are in school and before everyone gets home around 4. I don't drink in the evening or at the weekends. Probably having around 16 units a week.

I know if I was to tell anyone this they'd think I had a problem and needed a drink first thing in the morning, but I don't.It's about 4 or 5 days before I'll have a glass of wine again since the last one.

What are you're thoughts?

Agree, Janus - how much OP do you TRUTHFULLY drink during the week? As it's really unclear.
If anyone asked me I'd say less than I actually do. As you don't often want to admit to yourself never mind anyone else.
Maybe that's why you're getting pissed off with me and Bluntness.
Feeling personally attacked, and it really wasn't that way to start with.
I know I'd feel that way too,it can't be easy.

Claw001 · 26/11/2018 18:37

Oliversmum One 175 glass 12% wine is about 3 units. 2 glasses = 6 units and 3 would be 9 units.

CarolSpatula · 26/11/2018 18:37

You said you feel groggy in the morning if you drink in the evening, but then don’t you feel groggy in the evening if you drink during the day?

nottellingyou101 · 26/11/2018 18:40

I have most weeks 6 glasses spread across different days.

I meet different friends maybe 1x a month, so that week I will have more on top. I don't cut down because I am not fussed about having those extra few as it's not often.

That is basically it. Then last few weeks I have been out with friends because of Xmas things but I am not bothered because by mid December these will all be over.

Oliversmumsarmy · 26/11/2018 18:41

Firstly nottellingyou101 you do have responsibilities.

And secondly in the evening is when person b is with others do not drinking alone.

Now you are saying you are drinking 16 units twice per week (but your kids don’t know you are drunk). 8 units is binge drinking and detrimental to your health. A bit more than the 2-3 glasses you were talking about in your op

MaggieAndHopey · 26/11/2018 18:42

That's wrong I think Claw - it's two units per 175ml glass of 12% wine, three units per 250ml (approx)

nottellingyou101 · 26/11/2018 18:43

Carol. Nope I don't feel groggy, snappy e.t.c I don't always have a snooze but sometimes I do. People have attacked me for that, but I will have a snooze some days even If I don't have any wine. I am not sleeping because of the wine, I'm sleeping because I enjoy an afternoon nap.

OP posts:
justtryingtodoitright · 26/11/2018 18:44

OP- you seem a little snappy today. Is that because of the wine or because you need a wine? 😬

nottellingyou101 · 26/11/2018 18:44

No OliversMum 16 at most for the entire week unless I go out, which is usually 1x a month with a friend.

OP posts:
Janus · 26/11/2018 18:44

But a glass can be a big difference, a small glass of 125ml you will get 6 of those in a bottle, a large glass that’s 250ml is a third of a bottle. That’s why it’s easier to say half a bottle, three quarters of a bottle as easier to visualise as glasses can vary hugely.

nottellingyou101 · 26/11/2018 18:46

JustTrying Seriously. Think that if you like.

This thread has stressed me out, not lack of wine.

Maggie it might be, I googled!

Google told me Smile

MarshaBradyo · 26/11/2018 18:48

I don’t think of units but the op said 175ml per glass
So x 3
3/4 bottle
First time I could visualise it

Oliversmumsarmy · 26/11/2018 18:49

Claw001

3 glasses = 9 units.

I have no idea about units

I don’t drink because I don’t process alcohol in any form like other people do.

I made a mistake on the Mumsnet low carb diet.

Someone posted that vanilla essence had much less carbs than sugar when you are making coffee.

I was surprised when the vanilla essence went through the till and it came up as an age check.

One teaspoon in my coffee later that day and didn’t even manage to drink a quarter of a cup. The room was spinning and I couldn’t drive Ds to his activity.

Note to self vanilla essence contains alcohol

justtryingtodoitright · 26/11/2018 18:50

Well I guess it would have done- it's a big thread and a lot to take on board.

I guess the general consensus is- your habits are not normal and consequences could be that you are unable to perform as a parent during the day should an emergency arise.

Just the fact that you asked the question in the first place, speaks volumes. Your defensiveness is also indicative of someone with a problem that they are trying hard to prove isn't a problem.

I hope you seek help.

Oliversmumsarmy · 26/11/2018 18:52

But 16 is 2 units more than recommended although having googled it there doesn’t seem to be a difference between men and women which I find odd because women tend to be smaller and process alcohol differently

TrippingTheVelvet · 26/11/2018 18:53

LuYu's post is a perfect summation of exactly why there is an issue.

MarshaBradyo · 26/11/2018 19:02

Went back to LuYu’s post. Interesting for a few things not just this

Claw001 · 26/11/2018 19:11

Oliversmum I didn’t know about units either! That’s why I had to google! Smile

Blimey, you do have an alcohol intolerance! I drink occasionally, however I just pour a glass without thinking about units!

madmum5811 · 26/11/2018 19:18

3/4 of a bottle in a few hours, I would have the worst headache. I think it is the additives in wine that do this to me. It is so annoying. I can drink wine at lunch but not this much, I need the food to mop it all up.

When I think back to my student days, my tolerance was sky high looking back.

BarbaraofSevillle · 26/11/2018 19:24

But a glass can be a big difference, a small glass of 125ml you will get 6 of those in a bottle, a large glass that’s 250ml is a third of a bottle

Alcohol content also varies significantly. I usually drink cava or Italian whites, which are around 10/11% and a bottle is 8-9 units. Some reds can be 14%, which is probably 12/13 units.

So a glass of wine can be anything from a small glass of cava at less than 1.5 units to a large glass of red at 5 units.

The units figures were plucked out the air with no scientific basis anyway - they know there's little risk of harm with that amount (unless you drink them all in one go and then drive or operate heavy machinery, or if pregnant).

serialtester · 26/11/2018 19:25

I've found this thread interesting. If you search me you'll see I've had a serious substance abuse issue. All I can say is that if you're trying to control the substance it's actually controlling you.

BarbaraofSevillle · 26/11/2018 19:25

Re units - ie no significant extra risk in consuming 16 units compared to 14. It's a guideline, not an absolute limit.

Monkeynuts18 · 26/11/2018 19:36

I’ve found this thread really difficult to read - it’s reminded me a lot of the desperate, frustrating, impotent attempts to reason with an addict that were a constant feature of my childhood and teenage years.

I have no idea if you are an alcoholic OP - in fact I hope you aren’t. But the content of your posts have reminded me an awful lot of my father, who definitely is.
