I like this family but I can’t help but wince when I see a plate full of biscuits on their foot rest surrounded by feet encased in trainers.

AIBU to think they should TAKE THEM OFF!

Sorry.

Thinking about how much ‘urine, vomit, faeces remnants and god knows what else on the pavements’ will be coming in the house on the paws on a cat or a dog (and a cat with a catflap that can come in and out as they want??
Not even going into them been with a bare bum and all the poo particles that they must be depositing all over the house.

I’m wondering if there has ever been a study on how much germs these animals are bringing in the house. Wink

Bear2014 · 21/11/2018 09:42

If you've got massive dogs roaming around, I can't imagine a pair of trainers making much difference to the state of cleanliness...

yolofish · 21/11/2018 09:43

DH is shoes on, DDs and I are shoes off. I dont care about germs, but shoes are uncomfortable!

RebeccaCloud9 · 21/11/2018 09:47

@istandwithposie Yes! In our house! All I can think is shoes shoes shoes. But I'm too polite (cowardly) to say anything.

Seafoodeatit · 21/11/2018 09:47

I've always thought those plates of snacks were put there for the tv, I can't imagine being able to leave plates of food lying around with dogs around the house, they would get licked/eaten surely? And who just constantly grazes anyway? going off topic now! but YANBU, I don't like shoes indoors, I don't want stuff getting tracked into the house or sofas/foot rest to get muddy.

IStandWithPosie · 21/11/2018 09:54

@RebeccaCloud9 what rude people! I don’t know anyone that would put their feet up on someone else’s couch let alone with shoes on!!

WibblewobbleTum · 21/11/2018 09:56

We are a shoes off family. DC are in the habit of taking off their shoes at the door nobody whose house we go to, they are comfortable that way and most families we know are the shoes off sort too. DPs however don't mind shoes on. They have laminate flooring in the sitting room and despite DM cleaning regularly, I can't help noticing how dirty DC socks are after we visit. That's laminate so easier to clean but I wonder how much dirt from shoes absorbs into carpets which aren't as easy to clean and see.

I have never seen this programme but I NEED to know more about this dog Dave.

What breed is it? My mental image of pleasant family but with their feet up is incomplete without info on the dog...

kenandbarbie · 21/11/2018 10:32

What are you on about? Everyone I know wears shoes indoors!

Dave the dog Grin

longwayoff · 21/11/2018 10:39

I feel the same about the shoes. But what fascinates me is, the dogs (5, I think) leave them alone. Mostly.

longwayoff · 21/11/2018 10:41

Dave the lap-sitting Rottweiler. And there are o thers, equally huge Grin

PowerPantsRule · 21/11/2018 10:41

The concept of wearing shoes indoors seems so ALIEN to me. Why would you? When you don't have to? Think of the crap you're treading into your carpets!

longwayoff · 21/11/2018 10:45

On no. Bad news about Dave, they'll be so upset. Sad.

KlutzyDraconequus · 21/11/2018 10:50

I get up, I put my shoes on.
Come bed time, I take them off.
If there's a place I go that demands I remove them, I don't go to that place.

As for tracking stuff into my house. There's these things called 'Matts'.
You put them by your doors to wipe your shoes on. As shoes are usually made of rubber or some other non porous material, they wipe clean fairly easily. Unlike socks, or soft slippers that don't wipe clean at all.
Having a cat or dog will bring in, and spread, far more detritus than a pair of wiped shoes.

SoyDora · 21/11/2018 10:58

I never knew this was something people got so irate over until joining MN Grin.
I take my shoes off in my own house simply because I find it more comfortable. The DC’s seem to have got into the habit of removing theirs as soon as they walk in the door too (they’re 5 and 3). I have never, ever asked a visitor to take their shoes off and never would (their comfort is more important to me than my carpets) but I find that most people tend to, except my mum who never does. Then again she rarely takes her coat off either, which is odd.
I’ve never seen Gogglebox but I do think shoes up on sofas/a footrest next to snacks is a bit manky.

SoyDora · 21/11/2018 10:59

My dog wouldn’t dream of eating snacks off a plate though!

theymademejoin · 21/11/2018 11:14

@PowerPantsRule - The concept of wearing shoes indoors seems so ALIEN to me. Why would you? When you don't have to? Think of the crap you're treading into your carpets!

Whereas I wonder why you would want the hassle of putting shoes on and off every time you go out/come in. I wonder why you would in the winter when it's colder and therefore more uncomfortable to be shoeless (obviously in your own house you may wear slippers). I also find the notion of bare feet or socks wandering around my house a bit bleuch. What about all the athlete's foot, verrucas etc that people are traipsing around your house. Why would you want that when you don't have to?

However, I'm happy to accept that people are different and make different choices.

RitaSueandFatFuckingMavis · 21/11/2018 11:52

I have seen that as well.
I can't bear shoes on in a house. Each to their own but to me it's disgusting.

IrmaFayLear · 21/11/2018 11:57

What do you mean, bad news about Dave? I thought another of their dogs had died, but not Dave Sad

Mia1415 · 21/11/2018 12:03

We wear shoes in our house. I don't have an issue with it.

I do sometimes wear slippers but only for comfort.

I will take my shoes off if I visit a house that asks me too or where it is clearly expected, but I absolutely hate it.

Jenala · 21/11/2018 12:11

This thread is so eye opening. I had no idea people just wore their shoes indoors all the time. Everyone I know takes their shoes off when they come round and it's the first thing I do!

I do home visits as part of my job and I always keep them on then because it's more formal and I'm not staying long. I ask if there's nice carpets though and always have nice (and clean!) socks on in case.

I don't care that much about the hygiene aspect so much as the comfort aspect. Do you all sit upright on your sofas with your feet primly on the floor? What if you want your feet on the sofa? Although saying that I'm glad we're not treading outside grit and dirt upstairs. Feels really weird to me when I have to go back in the house in my shoes to grab something.

Celebelly · 21/11/2018 12:20

Dave is fine, don't panic! It was Frank who died :( Dave the rottie is still going strong.

LadyPamplemousse · 21/11/2018 12:22

Oh I generally kick my own shoes off. I do it for comfort though rather than a fear I’m dragging bubonic plague in on the soles of my shoes. I often loll about naked at home too, but I don’t want visitors to feel they have an automatic right to do that either.

Celebelly · 21/11/2018 12:27

Also I can't say I have any opinion about shoes on or off. I don't wear them inside but that's more of a comfort thing as I have cosy slippers. I wouldn't tell visitors to take them off (and I don't really notice or care if they have or not). Anyway, our dog is a permanent fixture on the sofa and she brings in half the forest after walks.
