What do you call your child’s underwear?

Potty training 2.5 yr old Dd. I hate the word ‘panties’ but ‘knickers’ seems age-inappropriate and ‘underwear’ too generic. Are there any better words out there?

Atsea 😂 we used to say Nicky knacky noodles

Potplant · 19/11/2018 21:58

Undies or knickers.

I'm in NW and pants mean trousers here.

NorksAreMessy · 19/11/2018 21:58

I still say ‘vestandpants’ for my own underwear...and I deffo don’t wear a vest

cantkeepawayforever · 19/11/2018 21:58

Pants for all.

Trousers for all daytime legwear except leggings {called leggings) or shorts (called shorts). Obviously if specific you can call them 'school trousers'; 'suit trousers'; 'jeans'; 'chinos' etc etc, but basically the generic word is trousers in this household.

ShatnersBassoon · 19/11/2018 21:59

But you wouldn't call leggings and jeans 'pants' either. Everything you'd call pants is trousers to me.

Chrystal1982 · 19/11/2018 21:59

I don’t have any girls so it’s pants for the dc and I refer to my own as knicks or knickers.
If I wanted a non gender specific I’d go with undies.

ShatnersBassoon · 19/11/2018 22:01

Don't get her started on vests...

fishfingersandwichextrordinair · 19/11/2018 22:03

Pants for everyone in the house

GerdaLovesLiIi · 19/11/2018 22:04

They're (ironically) chuddies in our house.

cementpointing · 19/11/2018 22:04

we just call them underpants.

Runnynosehunny · 19/11/2018 22:05

Vests are waistcoats. We call them undershirts.

Pompom42 · 19/11/2018 22:05

Pants for boys, knickers or pretty pants for girls - panties is horrible!

Fridaydreamer · 19/11/2018 22:06

Lancashire here and pants can absolutely mean outerwear, trousers, “work pants” etc.

Knickers here for girls.
Undies for boys.

ILoveAutum · 19/11/2018 22:07

When I was growing up it was knickers for girls and underpants for boys.

I tend to use knickers/pants interchangeably now for girls & pants/boxers for boys...with a sprinkling of undercrackers/kecks/grundies etc

Though, pants instead of knickers does seem a bit less intimate somehow.

desperatehousewife2 · 19/11/2018 22:07

In Ireland I’ve never heard pants being used to refer to underwear, we use it the same way Americans do, as trousers. In our house we call knickers knickies

MrsLJ2014 · 19/11/2018 22:07

As I said, everyone here (NW) uses pants for trousers but pants will always be underwear to me!!

DorisToday · 19/11/2018 22:07

Pants!

I don’t like ‘knickers’, it was a crude word growing up, similar to ‘tits’.

Queenofthedrivensnow · 19/11/2018 22:08

Er pants?

No one female says panties, only pervy Americans

Andyetanothernamechange · 19/11/2018 22:08

* Knicky knacky noos for some reason!*

For some reason this became our term for pull-ups which DD wore at night once she was potty trained in the day.

But otherwise, knickers. I refer to children's as knickers and mine is "underwear".

MuddlingThroughLife · 19/11/2018 22:08

In our house the girls wear knickers and ds wore pants. We also used the term pantaloons when we're messing around. No idea why.

AmIthatbloodycold · 19/11/2018 22:09

Pants pants pants

Panties is a horrible twee word

And trousers have legs and go over your pants

I see some people say it's a regional thing. I've only ever heard it from Americans

puzzledlady · 19/11/2018 22:09

Knickers for us. It was panties for me growing up - I still use panties myself but not for my daughter. When my son is old enough it’ll be pants or underwear.
