Potty training 2.5 yr old Dd. I hate the word ‘panties’ but ‘knickers’ seems age-inappropriate and ‘underwear’ too generic. Are there any better words out there?

Well, I do call leggings and jeans ‘pants’. Not if I’m talking to another adult who understands the differences between diffferent types of apparel for legs, but when I’m getting my toddler dressed, she puts on her panties and her vest and her top and her pants and her socks and her shoes.

I’m really regretting starting this thread now though.

Pants here too. Might I suggest unmentionables?

AvoidingDM · 19/11/2018 22:12

Pants or undies.

I once had a colleague tell me "My DH bought me new pan's" I miss heard (new pants) and was stood thinking WTF did you tell me that! "Oh that's lovely"Blush

hiddeneverythin · 19/11/2018 22:12

Pants

YoThePussy · 19/11/2018 22:12

Knickers, drawers or in the case of Bridget Jones type ones, catch alls.

MiddlingMum · 19/11/2018 22:12

Pants for boys, knickers for girls. Boxers for DH, knickers for me.

tolerable · 19/11/2018 22:13

bum pants

Satchell · 19/11/2018 22:14

They say pants for trousers in the North East too OP.

picklemepopcorn · 19/11/2018 22:15

Undies.

angelikacpickles · 19/11/2018 22:16

Knickers for my daughter, underpants for my son. Pants here means trousers.

Doilooklikeatourist · 19/11/2018 22:16

Pants .. this is definitely underwear though ,
Knickers ( possibly female though )
Undies

LambChopsMcGee · 19/11/2018 22:16

I'm team "underpants"

And I use "pants" the same way you do op. I'm from New Zealand. I find the regional differences in English really interesting.

Your underpants go under your pants.

And on top you wear a singlet.

Pants. And nappies are called pants too.

chibsortig · 19/11/2018 22:17

Pants, kecks, knickers, undercrackers.

midgwit · 19/11/2018 22:17

My son (3) calls them 'rundies', as a contraction of 'your undies' as they're often referred to ('pull your undies up' etc). If I had a girl it would probably still be undies or knickers.

Find it weird that people are insisting that pants can only mean underwear and not trousers. Pants comes from pantaloons (i.e. a form of trouser), this was shortened to pants and 'underpants' are so called as they are worn under your pants. 'Pants ' to mean knickers/undies is just a shortening of underpants.

DorothyLNaySayers · 19/11/2018 22:20

No one female says panties, only pervy Americans

Well. I am female, non-pervy, and not American, so I guess that’s blown that theory out of the water.

bridgetreilly · 19/11/2018 22:20

Smalls.

category12 · 19/11/2018 22:21

But you don't like the word either Grin, wasn't that the whole point?!

MrsFoxPlus4 · 19/11/2018 22:22

Well if you can’t use pants because that’s outwear call her undies lol underwear

Ohyesiam · 19/11/2018 22:22

According to OH , Panties are what old men whisper to young women who they are buying sex from. YUK!

My Irish granny used to call pants drawers, and a general affectionate insult was droopy drawers.

I think I’ve forgotten the original question.

Lovingbenidorm · 19/11/2018 22:25

A singlet?!?!😂😂😂😂😂

DorothyLNaySayers · 19/11/2018 22:26

I don’t like it because it’s twee, not because it’s pervy! It’s not pervy, it’s twee and a bit silly, like saying ‘front bottom’ when you mean ‘vulva’, but not porny/American/sexual! Shock

Can’t believe I’ve been backed into defending panties as a word. FML. Grin

I have an American student in my class (adults, not children) and there was great hilarity when he apologised for having “dirty pants” because he slipped and fell over on the way to college. I am sniggering slightly at the memory.

OP, we officially called underwear pants, but girls’ pants were referred to as knickers mainly. We used to do PE in our vests and navy knickers in school in the 80s here in Scotland.

kenandbarbie · 19/11/2018 22:27

Girls knickers are called briefs on the next website. No one says that though - weird.

I call them knickers for females, not sexy or she related at all, can be prefixed by descriptors ie big or frilly. Underpants or more specifically boxers for males.

SandunesAndRainclouds · 19/11/2018 22:27

Knicky-knacky-noos here Grin

Trousers go on your legs. Or your choos which has stuck from playing choo choo trains going through the tunnels trying to get wriggly toddlers dressed!
