Meeting Your Idols and Being Disappointed

Today I almost met somebody who has been a big figure in my life. It took ages to pluck up the courage to speak to them and I was totally dismissed. I wasn’t being a “gushing fan” and it was a setting that was laid back. Everyone else was lovely. Have tou ever met someone you admire and wish you hadn’t?

Was in a famous London hotel and Goldie Hawn was enjoying a quiet drink with a friend at the next table.

A couple approached her and asked for her autograph and a photo; she was really lovely and friend and willingly agreed.

Two minutes later they came up again as the first photo was apparently blurry. She again smiled and posed.

Third time they came up again as they didn’t like the first two, and she politely refused.

It made me soooo glad I’m not famous.

Sugarformyhoney · 19/11/2018 19:48

Haha another one for Barry Grant from Brookside was s twat- total idiot and tears after he was even mildly famous.
Denise Van Outen was super rude and self important..awful to some children who waited ages to meet her. Very heavily made up and rough looking too.
Dannii minougue was horrendous too.
Jim Davidson was the vilest customer I’ve ever served... famous or not, all clicking fingers and ‘do you know who I am’. Leered over 18 year old servers too 🤢
Lovely people were.. Alf garnet, total gent. Oddly, Kerry Katona was a dream. David Cassidy.
Kate Winsket lives locally and everyone who’s met her say she’s just lovely.

TheFreaksShallInheritTheEarth · 19/11/2018 19:49

TheGreenDot it wasn't George R R Martin, if that's who you mean (Snuggle messaged me).

Noloudnoises · 19/11/2018 19:49

And my idol (at the time) was Christopher Milne. He was ancient and I was 7 or something and he was a gruff old man. Not surprising really given what we know now. But also annoyed at yet another child asking him if he is Christopher Robbin!

Abra1de · 19/11/2018 19:50

Michael Gove was nice to my daughter and let her take a selfie with him. Just sayin’ too.

Sugarformyhoney · 19/11/2018 19:51

Also met billie piper and her ex husband- he was lovely, she wasn’t 😂

Noloudnoises · 19/11/2018 19:53

And inexplicably Neil and Christine Hamilton were just lovely and a charming gregarious couple! Funny too!

Esther rantzen is a bit cold and steely but polite...

BoooForYou · 19/11/2018 19:57

@TheFreakShallInheritTheEarth re:Adam Ant. Mate of mine used to be in a group and they were on the same gig as him on record store day a few years back.
It was her Mums birthday and so she was missing it as she had the gig to do, Adam Ant was her mum's fave back in the day and she happened to mention so to him. On hearing it was her birthday, he got my friend to phone her mum and then sang happy birthday to her. Made her mum's day.

I met Ruby Wax once. She was clearly not happy to be at the event she was at, was really dismissive of people. Same as Brix Smith and Miquita Oliver.

Sweetpea55 · 19/11/2018 19:58

My sister was on Telly Addicts hosted by Noel Edmonds and she said he was an absolute tosser,
As he is going into the jungle on IM A CELEB I told her we will vote him to do do all the tasks.

He's a short arsed twat as well

Runningishard · 19/11/2018 19:58

A lady mayoress I know was seated next to HM the Queen at dinner. Said she has a fabulous dry sense of humour and made the mayoress feel totally at ease

YouTheCat · 19/11/2018 20:03

Many years ago a friend of mine bumped into Jeremy Beadle. They got chatting and she invited him to her 40th birthday party that night.

He turned up, was absolutely lovely to everyone and danced the night away.

Goodmum1234 · 19/11/2018 20:03

I was at the good food show a few years ago and purchased the ‘baking bible’. I then queued to meet said celeb and have my book signed. I’d loved her for ever and had all her books, I was so excited. She looked at me like something off her shoe and sternly said, ‘name!’. I was crushed,
Just wanted a bit if kindness at a book signing event

Scallywag1903 · 19/11/2018 20:07

Met most of the cast of strictly the year Zoe Ball was dancing with Ian Waite. All totally charming - Brendon Cole, Darren Gough etc, The guy from Blue ( can't remember his name) asked me if he could use my phone charger..
Had dinner with Edward Woodard - totally charming and wonderful
Met the original little girl from Mary Poppins (now grown up ofc - Karen Dotrice) she was brilliant!
Yes - I have heard from friends that know her, that Emma Willis is delightful

LadyRenoir · 19/11/2018 20:10

I had a dubious pleasure to interact with Jessie Wallace once, Kat Slater is clearly her spirit animal.

Snowdrifthill · 19/11/2018 20:12

Goodmum1234- not firsthand experience, but I have been told a similar story of this celeb.

Tunnocks34 · 19/11/2018 20:13

I know a few people on previous threads have said otherwise, but I met David and Victoria Beckham once and they were absolutely lovely. Made a big fuss of my then 1 year old, and were really chatty. The way they spoke to me, you’d have thought I was the famous one.

Mark Wright was a prick. I saw him once, and did that thing, where you think you know them before realising it’s because they were famous. I smiled at him and he actually scoffed at me.

chickensaresafehere · 19/11/2018 20:16

ItsClemFandango
Nooooooooo!!!!

SauvingnonBlanketyBlanc · 19/11/2018 20:16

Dh met johnny Vegas and said he was friendly but quiet

24hoursfromtulsa · 19/11/2018 20:18

A family member is a massive fan of Louis Theroux, and was so excited when she heard he would be at her workplace making one of his documentaries. When she met him she said hello and made some small talk. He wasn't exactly rude, but was quite short with her and not at all friendly, actually a bit sarcastic. Maybe he was just having a bad morning, but she was so disappointed as she thought he would be lovely.

Flippidyflap · 19/11/2018 20:19

David Walliams was lovely when I met him. There were some adults harassing him for his photo and he asked them to wait until he’d done pics and autographs for the kids first. I’ve had a bit of a thing for him ever since!

Also, Chris Evans.........couldn’t have been nicer.

DanielRicciardosSmile · 19/11/2018 20:19

I met Sylvester McCoy (Doctor Who) a couple of years back and he was absolutely lovely.

Mummadeeze · 19/11/2018 20:20

Celebs who I have met who were all very friendly and extremely nice: Dermot O’Leary, David Mitchell, Grace Jones, Samuel L Jackson, Sophie Ellis Bextor, Adam Lambert, June Sarpong, Craig Revel Horwood, Nenah Cherry, Frank Skinner, Yvette Fielding, Simon Anstell, John Sergent.
I found Bob Monkhouse a little bit leery and Ricky Gervais a little impatient. Tom Hiddleston was quite stand-offish but to be fair he was getting bothered quite a lot by fans.
Haven’t met anyone awful.

BeetlebumShesAGun · 19/11/2018 20:20

@Boooforyou I met Miquita Oliver on a night out once - lent her my lighter. She was really fucking rude. I complimented her jacket and she actually said “yeah it’s designer” smirked and walked off.

I’ve told this story on here a few times, but I met Pete Doherty - served him in an empty pub and he was really sweet, chatted away and encouraged me to work hard at university, which was the same uni he’d went to.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 19/11/2018 20:25

Ooh I also once literally bumped into Howard from Take That - he was practising his unicycling in the corridor outside my office, I was in a mood and flung the door open without knowing he was there, and knocked him flying. I was mortified, he thought it was hilarious. I've had a bit of a soft spot for him since.

BasilFaulty · 19/11/2018 20:33

I love these threads!
