Meeting Your Idols and Being Disappointed

Today I almost met somebody who has been a big figure in my life. It took ages to pluck up the courage to speak to them and I was totally dismissed. I wasn’t being a “gushing fan” and it was a setting that was laid back. Everyone else was lovely. Have tou ever met someone you admire and wish you hadn’t?

Actually Barry Grant from Brookside was a twat!

Tony Blair I so wanted to hate but he was so nice!

MoistCantaloupe · 19/11/2018 13:23

Underpressureidiot That is hilarious!

tattychicken · 19/11/2018 13:24

Jeremy Guscott. Sexist, rude and dismissive.

ghostyslovesheets · 19/11/2018 13:25

Oh and I met the whole cast of the new Doctor Who plus writers- again all lovely x

FluffyPersian · 19/11/2018 13:26

I always thought Marcus Waring (chef) was awesome and he used to pop up in my dreams quite a lot a couple of years ago Grin.

When looking for a wedding reception venue, we met one of the Chefs that had been on professional Masterchef and had met him, so I asked him at the end of the meeting "I'm so sorry you were knocked out as your food is exceptional, however... what was Marcus Waring like?"

He said that it was really different to what you see on TV and whilst the Chefs are preparing the food, the chefs and Greg walk around giving 'advice' to the Chefs that is never shown on TV - e.g. 'That's too big, I'd take some off' or, 'You need more potatoes' type of thing.

However - when it came to presenting his food, he got completely and utterly roasted for the very things he had changed based on their 'guidance'.... and apparently when he got sent off, Mr Waring said 'and that's why no Chef running a pub is going to get very far on Masterchef.......'

He could have been lying as he got kicked out, but he didn't come across as bitter - just really sad as he said that Marcus had been a massive idol of his for years and he really looked up to him - meeting him had been a massive let down and he was really shocked that he was such a totally different personality off camera.

SerenDippitty · 19/11/2018 13:27

tattychicken I can imagine. He's known as slapped-arse face in this house.

TheFreaksShallInheritTheEarth · 19/11/2018 13:27

Oh come on, OP, who was it? Grin

I don't think I've idolised anyone since Adam Ant - circa 1981 - when I was 12. (Please don't anyone say he's not nice!)

Famous people are the same as everyone else: nice, not so nice, And varying depending on mood.
I've met apparently nice ones: Michael Sheen, Ray Winstone; a not nice one: Noel Edmunds; and a nice but a bit up himself one: Marti Pellow.

TheChickenOfTruth · 19/11/2018 13:30

Was working as a waitress at a corporate Christmas party and a guy came up to me, told me it was his party and that I should be having fun too, offered me a drink and told me to come dance with him and some of his colleagues. Had no idea who he was at the time, but it was Richard Branson. I have a lot of respect for the man now and the way he treats his staff. I know not everyone likes him but he seemed like a decent bloke to me.

Fun fact, my future in-laws were at that party, I found out several years later. Smile

GabsAlot · 19/11/2018 13:32

fluffy i really cant see him saying that as he knows and works with chefs with pubs

most i can see depends on the day cold have had some bad news

but ive always heard that cilla was up herself and elton is rude

LuckyDiamond · 19/11/2018 13:33

Adam Ant stood me up (professional meeting, though I’m a fan too). I don’t mind though I knew he was having a bad day that day and did still get front section of the gig and a backstage tour.

DarlingNikita · 19/11/2018 13:33

ShatnersWig, I know when Michael W died and this person was certainly not telling porkies.

By 'relatively recently' I meant that she's (obviously) always been related to him, but only found out when she was an adult.

But yes, I can see that I used a poor turn of phrase.

Cutietips · 19/11/2018 13:35

I met Nick Frost recently, who was in Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead, Mr Sloane and lots of other things. He was absolutely delightful and charming to staff in the cafe we were in. His little boy is gorgeous too.

ShePoopsAConker · 19/11/2018 13:35

Oh god I'm so glad Andy Serkis, Michael Palin and David Tennant have come out of this well! I couldn't bear it if Michael Palin was an arse.

I met John Peel and he was very kind and funny and endlessly patient with numerous gushing fans. He wasn't my idol but I was a bit star struck and impressed that he had time for everyone.

I also know a pop star (not quite so famous these days but was v big a few years ago). She can be nice, but she is totally ruthless and has a core of pure steel. She comes across as lovely and chatty and self deprecating in interviews. No I'm not saying who!

missperegrinespeculiar · 19/11/2018 13:35

yes, Bono, he was very friendly, but also very arrogant!

Sean Connery on the other hand, utterly charming and still gorgeous!

EdwardScissorskills · 19/11/2018 13:36

I met Bryan Cranston (Walter White from Breaking Bad) and he was utterly polite (even when faced with DH’s fanboying) and charming.

Also, and this is a bit niche - John Grant (singer) is LOVELY. If he wasn’t gay I definitely would.

ReggieKrayDoYouKnowMyName · 19/11/2018 13:38

I met Stephen Fry, who I had long admired, and he was lovely.

ShePoopsAConker · 19/11/2018 13:38

Also I know someone who met Morrissey and Marr on a train, in their heyday, who was a huge fan of theirs. Now I know Morrissey hasn't covered himself in glory of late. But they spent the whole journey chatting to my friend and were very lovely and friendly.

BruegeITheElder · 19/11/2018 13:39

I met Bryan Cranston (Walter White from Breaking Bad)

Oh I'm so jealous. He always seems like a really nice guy in interviews and stuff.

Rachelover40 · 19/11/2018 13:48

People have off days and your 'idol' probably didn't even realise they were being less than expected.

Everyone is a human being, we can't expect them to be superhuman.

Do people really have to use such bad language on this forum (not the op)?

Rudgie47 · 19/11/2018 13:48

ZanZeeee I know a friend of a friend who actually used to go out with Elton John years ago before David Furnish. He said he was alright and a nice guy so hes either nice to his shags or has got worse since then

Heartofglass21 · 19/11/2018 13:49

I met Jarvis Cocker at a folk festival back in the day, before Pulp had hit the charts. He was charming. Sweet and kind. I'd like to think he still is.

MaiaRindell · 19/11/2018 13:49

steff13 Me too. David Tennant was absolutely lovely.

PositiveVibez · 19/11/2018 13:52

Also, and this is a bit niche - John Grant (singer) is LOVELY. If he wasn’t gay I definitely would

Oh I lurrrrve him and I just knew he would be a delight 😍

abacucat · 19/11/2018 13:54

Cliff Richard for my mum. My mum used to collect autographs so has hung around a lot of back stage doors. She said everyone was always very nice, even if they were tired and off handed they were okay. But she managed to catch Cliff Richard by himself and he was utterly rude and vile to her - a 13 year old girl.

Rudgie47 · 19/11/2018 13:54

A friend of mine has done a lot of work with Slebs and the worst person by far she said was Peter Kaye. Hes is horrifically nasty to all support staff and they all hated him.
