Meeting Your Idols and Being Disappointed

Today I almost met somebody who has been a big figure in my life. It took ages to pluck up the courage to speak to them and I was totally dismissed. I wasn’t being a “gushing fan” and it was a setting that was laid back. Everyone else was lovely. Have tou ever met someone you admire and wish you hadn’t?

I bumped into a friend of mine today who works for British airways first class cabin crew.
She confirmed cilla black was vile!

LuckyDiamond · 27/11/2018 13:49

Ulkrika was beaten in public by her then boyfriend Stan Collymore at the Auld Alliance pub in Paris. It was 1998. I know because I was there (at the pub not with them so didn’t see what happened).

Norma27. Bonds nightclub by any chance?as I too met Dwight there too a few times.

Norma27 · 27/11/2018 15:21

Close to bonds. Stoodi bakers mostly

I also know a cabin crew member who said Cilla is vile.

How can someone who comes across as so friendly and down to earth on TV be obnoxious in real life? It's mad!

I wonder if anyone who has been on Blind Date will be on soon to confirm. It does seem that Cilla has two very different personalities

thenightsky · 27/11/2018 15:51

I have a friend who went on Blind Date many years ago. She said that Cilla was very pleasant and down to earth.

Abeautifulpeagreenboat · 27/11/2018 17:58

Another with a friend who was an airline steward. Cilla was indeed renowned for being really nasty.

Yamayo · 27/11/2018 19:29

Agree on John Barrowman.
Years ago he was queuing behind me in Peter Jones. Told me (totally out the blue) DD1 was a gorgeous baby- in a sweet gushing way.
Clearly a great guy. Grin

Btw can someone tell me who was the fantasy writer mentioned a few pages back? I am a fan and rather curious!

Sheitgeist · 27/11/2018 19:39

Sent you a PM, Yamayo.

I met Anna Friel about 3 times back when I worked in retail. She is very lovely and chatty. As is Christine Bleakley. Abi Titmuss on the other hand looked at me like I was an idiot when I explained that something she wanted wasn't stocked in our store but she was adamant she'd seen it the week before (we definitely didn't stock it)

LuckyDiamond · 27/11/2018 20:43

I have a friend who is former BA 1st Class cabin crew who said the same about Cilla.

Maybe Cilla was ok but hated cabin crew? Maybe Bobby had a fling with an air hostess?

My pal says Princess Michael was way worse than old Cilla.

I know a famous who many people seem to idolise.

He’s an arse. His speciality is being very very charming to those he deems worthy of it (people he thinks cultivating will be his gain), but to those that aren’t he makes it clear he can’t be bothered.

He’s an arrogant arse.

That said, other celebs i have met have been absolutely lovely.

ZanyMobster · 27/11/2018 21:12

John Barrowman was absolutely lovely when we met him. He was in a play and we met him after, lovely and very Scottish Grin

Sheitgeist · 27/11/2018 22:27

lovely and very Scottish

Er, are you sure you mean John Barrowman? He's American!

cricketmum84 · 27/11/2018 22:39

Actually he really is Scottish! Born in Glasgow and only moved to US when he was 7. If you listen carefully the Scottish accent comes out on certain words :)

Sheitgeist · 27/11/2018 22:41

Wikipedia says he was born in Boston, Massachusetts!

Clawdy · 27/11/2018 22:44

Definitely born and brought up in Scotland, and teased for his accent when they moved to America.

Sheitgeist · 27/11/2018 22:44

Oh that's strange... says he was born in Boston in the "quick info box", but later says he was born in Glasgow. Confused
Get it sorted, Wikipedia!

FunkyKingston · 27/11/2018 22:56

John Barrowman is Scottish born to Scottish parents amd moved to the US for his dad's job. He consciously 'learned' an American accent to avoid being bullied, but still speaks with a Scottish accent to his family.

BeachtheButler · 28/11/2018 00:53

I met the actor Pete Postlethwaite once. He was jolly. No other word for it. A happy bloke who was clearly enjoying life. Pleasure to deal with. A mate of mine was Ronnie Corbett's paperboy back in the 1970s. He said RC was a nice bloke and good for a fiver at Xmas.

There are loads of stories of Cilla and husband being arses. Pisses me off that they erected a statue of her in Liverpool.

Actually, I’m afraid I’m a dissenter on John Barrowman. I met him this year at a convention and felt very brushed aside by him when getting an autograph. I bought a bunch of his favorite biscuits which he was gratefully receiving from others but he barely acknowledged me and put my photo aside quickly and just started talking to the people behind me. I promise I was nice. My sister commented afterwards that she was really annoyed at how he’d reacted.

MyOtherProfile · 28/11/2018 07:17

It was Rory McCann who plays the Hound.
I watched this unfold too. However to be fair she (and others) did say that the whole meet and greet was horribly organised and stressful, with RM and others being treatwd like cattle with no breaks, and the general consensus was that everyone else who met him at other comic cons found him to be lovely.
