Meeting Your Idols and Being Disappointed

Today I almost met somebody who has been a big figure in my life. It took ages to pluck up the courage to speak to them and I was totally dismissed. I wasn’t being a “gushing fan” and it was a setting that was laid back. Everyone else was lovely. Have tou ever met someone you admire and wish you hadn’t?

Judy Murray was lovely, as I hoped she would be. Did a wee video to say hell to my DD who idolised her then chatted to my mum about the local tennis circuit back in the day (my mum alleges she will have made sarnies and cakes that Andy Murray MUST have eaten at our club in local comps when he was aged about 10😆)

Uniquack · 19/11/2018 20:36

Colin Firth is an absolute diva. Gary Oldman can be unpleasant as well.

Piffpaffpoff · 19/11/2018 20:36

To say “hello” obviously.....not hell.

ShowOfHands · 19/11/2018 20:43

Olivia Colman is a friend of a friend (in fact said friend knows many famous people through her dp's work). She is everything you'd expect. Just lovely and normal and quite beautiful.

Funkyslippers · 19/11/2018 20:43

A friend around 10 years ago was a on a train with Sue Perkins. There was 1 bottle of water left for sale and my friend got to it first. SP apparently kicked off big time and my friend was almost expecting her to say "don't you know who I am?" She was v unpleasant, apparently

GabsAlot · 19/11/2018 20:44

walke · 19/11/2018 20:45

How is everyone meeting all these celebrities?

covetingthepreciousthings · 19/11/2018 20:45

Love reading these threads. I don't have many encounters with celebs but...

Mitchell & Webb were lovely when I met them after a show, same goes for Ross Noble too, he was really lovely both times I've met him.

Also met Derren Brown who was seemed nice too.

longwayoff · 19/11/2018 20:45

I am very jealous of pp who met Martin Clunes's beautiful horses.

Darkautumn · 19/11/2018 20:46

Dawn French was rude and dismissive to my MIL.
Poor MIL just wanted to say hello but DF clearly didn't want to say hello back.

TheFreaksShallInheritTheEarth · 19/11/2018 20:54

BoooForYou Aw, thanks for the Adam Ant anecdote. I hadn't thought about him for decades, but then because I did this morning I spent a little time listening to and watching him. Saw some footage of him performing this year, aged 64 and looking amazing! I may start idolising him again! Grin

Saucery · 19/11/2018 20:55

Val McDermid was incredibly rude and insisted “these people” be moved from a table so her and her friends could annex a corner of the pub. We didn’t move. Or buy/read any more of her books.

Rudgie47 · 19/11/2018 20:57

Yes she is supposed to be rude, shes pretty crap live as well.
Funny story about her, she got lost in Cornwall and ended up down a dirt track with a house at the end. The woman in the house was a friends aunty, she sent her husband out to see who it was. He returned and she asked well who was it was it and she didn't believe him when he said it was Dawn French!

She said well what did she want and he just said directions back to the main road etc.

tattychicken · 19/11/2018 20:59

Gutted about Dawn French. Shock

TryItAndDieFatLass · 19/11/2018 21:05

Idina Menzel was absolutely lovely

Helen Ward - Wales' top goalscorer -was great fun, chatty, and interested in us.

I've been a Level 42 fan for many many years and have seen them in concert a fair few times. Mike Lindup couldn't be nicer when we stayed to chat at the stage door; Mark King however refused to come out and eventually snuck onto the tour bus. When he saw us walking towards him (our car was parked beyond the bus) he ran inside. He never spilled a drop of his large glass of wine though. I won't pay a penny to see him again.

martingoresnipplechain · 19/11/2018 21:05

Another one happy that Adam Ant is lovely. SmileWent to see him live last year and he was incredible, and came across really well telling his anecdotes in between songs.

Anasnake · 19/11/2018 21:05

Ian Brown from the Stone Roses in a pub, extremely polite and really lovely. Happily posed for pics with loads of drunken fools and smelled nice too.

Nearthebig40 · 19/11/2018 21:11

Jay from the inbetweeners was rude rude rude (ok I know he’s not that famous!) Keith Lemon was absolutely lovely. Very friendly and happy to talk to everyone. Didn’t think he’d be like that!

bunintheoven88 · 19/11/2018 21:13

I used to work in a well known hotel chain and lots of celebs stayed there.
Rudest person was Jeremy Paxman, he spoke to all of the waiting on staff
like shit and was extremely dismissive. Told me the waitressing uniform I was wearing was ridiculous, as though I had chosen it 😂
We were all too scared to clear his table in the end!

Nicest person I ever met was Jeremy Kyle. He was completely different to the character you see on television, genuinely polite and friendly and remembered me by name every time he stayed after that.

HundredMilesAnHour · 19/11/2018 21:15

Remember Bruce Parry (from BBC's Tribe)? I had such a crush on him. I met him in person and he was so lovely that I could barely string a word together. He also enjoys a glass of red wine so good taste too!

Steve Redgrave and James Cracknell were both nice guys when I met them.

Ben Elton was in my ex's (very small) local pub and just kept himself to himself but in a nice non-celeb way.

A friend works in the "industry" and confirms that David Tennant (who he does a lot of work with) is a sweetheart whereas all the stories about Joan Collins being a nightmare/primadonna are true.

alfagirl73 · 19/11/2018 21:18

Have worked in music biz and tv and have met a few - most are lovely, especially if you just talk to them normally and are polite to them and actually have something to say to them beyond "I want a selfie!". A few I can comment on...

Alice Cooper - absolutely lovely - charming
Graham Norton - lovely and funny
Orlando Bloom - very sweet and friendly
Mark Shaw - SOOOOO nice - very friendly, kind and extremely intelligent.
Alan Rickman was lovely - still very sad about him.
Helena Bonham Carter - SOOOO lovely and had a right go at a bloke who was trying to shove me out the way and was getting quite rough - she went ballistic at him - refused to sign anything for him and went out of her way to make sure I was okay.
Tim Burton - really lovely
Johnny Depp - beyond kind, gracious, generous, gentle, intelligent and goes out of his way for people - very sweet bloke and easy to talk to.
Brian May - really nice and polite
Fish from Marillion - slightly scary but lovely
Eddie Izzard - always friendly and nice.

Matilda15 · 19/11/2018 21:20

I have a couple.

Met Michael Caine in Harrods when I was 15, he knocked into me by accident and was mortified, I had a chat with him for a few mins and he wished me a lovely day sightseeing. I turned round to see my Mum open mouthed staring at me, I had no idea who he was 🙈

Years ago met James Corden (he’s originally from my area) when he was with Sheridan Smith. It was about 3am in a gay bar doing karaoke. They were both lovely completely normal and un self conscious.

Samantha Womack nearly bought the house next door to me when she started in Eastenders as Ronnie Mitchell and now lives in the village along from us, I have seen her about and hear she does a lot for the local community and is apparently lovely.

Lee Ryan from Blue/Eastenders at Disneyland. It was his little boys birthday and they had a cake from the characters etc and the table next to them would not leave him alone. He was so lovely to them and ended up sharing he birthday cake with them. It was also my birthday and I also was embarrassed with a cake from the characters and he sang happy birthday along with them and on the way out held the door open and said he hoped I’d had a lovely birthday.

Oooh one more, had a chat in line at a water park with Colleen Rooney, thought she looked familiar and then when we got back to the hotel spotted her in the Daily Fail at said water park and realised. She was really normal and her kids were all very well behaved.

MissMarplesKnitting · 19/11/2018 21:24

I've heard from showbiz linked person that Helena B-C is very funny and great to work with. Very professional, likes things done properly but lovely with a real sense of fun.

And can confirm Olivia Colman as totally as you'd expect and lovely.

Ditto Matt Smith....

Krouse64 · 19/11/2018 21:25

Met Eric morecambe when I was training in hospitality. He was so lovely made a point of coming in the kitchen to thank chefs. Left a very large tip for the waiting staff. And sent me a big bunch of flowers next day. All because I let him borrow a set of chef whites to pull a practical joke. Met lots of famous people but he is still my
favourite one

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 19/11/2018 21:28

Rowan Atkinson is a rude arse. Saw him at Goodwood Revival and he seemed annoyed at being recognised but simultaneously not being the biggest cheese. Murray Walker, on the other hand, was incredibly friendly and cheerful and a real pleasure. Damon Hill is also very nice.

Simon Amstell was sweet and incredibly shy, he was out with some friends when we crossed paths and was thoughtful and generous with them and made no fuss. Kim Sears and Judy Murray were guarded but pleasant. I also came across Laurence Fox and Billie Piper- he was friendly, with a dry sense of humour, she was a bit reserved but polite. Friends mum delivered Billie & Laurence's baby and said he was really friendly and funny. A friend of mine served the Osmonds- said they were all lovely and Donny is heavenly!

Cousin had Princess Margaret visit his RAF base- said she was an arrogant, ill mannered bitch. I also think Sue Perkins comes across as aggressive so I'm not surprised to see her on the twat list. Friend used to work for Princess Anne, said she was firm but lovely.
