Meeting Your Idols and Being Disappointed

Today I almost met somebody who has been a big figure in my life. It took ages to pluck up the courage to speak to them and I was totally dismissed. I wasn’t being a “gushing fan” and it was a setting that was laid back. Everyone else was lovely. Have tou ever met someone you admire and wish you hadn’t?

My twins met Johnny Marr, they were about 15 he was lovely, gave them advice about starting a band. They met him again couple of years later and he took a picture of them and friends mocking up the Queen is dead cover, also gave them a shout out at his gig that night. Top bloke x

I met Phil Collins when I was a waitress at a big hotel. He was thoroughly obnoxious.

More recently I spent time with Murray Walker who was an absolute legend, Noddy Holder who was very nice, Julie Walters she was friendly and Graham Norton who was exactly as he is on tv

Nodancingshoes · 19/11/2018 19:14

Didn't meet him but always lived Derek Acora so went to see him at my local theatre. What a crock of shit.....

Nodancingshoes · 19/11/2018 19:14

*loved

CharltonLido73 · 19/11/2018 19:14

My husband worked in the media for many years, working alongside and interviewing well-known names.
He spoke well of most of them. I was always impressed when he met someone who was massive when I was a kid and they turned out to be nice (e.g. Alice Cooper - so different from his persona).

The only two he ever spoke ill of were Mariah Carey and Andie McDowell (divas, apparently).

LovingFizz · 19/11/2018 19:15

Still waiting for someone who has met MJ 👀

VickyEadie · 19/11/2018 19:17

I had almost forgotten the time (20 years ago) my (female) partner and I were leaving a hotel and shouted 'Hold the lift, please!' as we left our room.

Entering it, we realised there was only one other person in there. It was actor Robert Powell, whom we both loved. We both stared at him open-mouthed (we possibly even drooled) and he smiled broadly. No words needed to be said.

longwayoff · 19/11/2018 19:18

Fluffypersian, that's very interesting. My sister and I have often wondered about Wareings new personality since he got the Mchef gig. Suspected was all surface and true Wareing was still in there and so it seems. Unkind and unnecessary.

GabsAlot · 19/11/2018 19:19

what a shock about kp-not

VictoriaBun · 19/11/2018 19:20

I'm an oldie - loved a massive boy band in the 70s . Met one a few years ago. Not good as I work in a prison 😒

MadisonAvenue · 19/11/2018 19:23

IndieTara so glad to read that Julie Walters is friendly, she always comes across as very down to earth.

TheGreenDot · 19/11/2018 19:23

@Snugglepumpkin I’m worried this is a book with dragons? Surely he’s not so rude?

Athena51 · 19/11/2018 19:29

My DP met Tony Adams (ex Arsenal and England captain) on a train. He is a total hero of mine so I was slightly anxious.

Apparently he was completely lovely, gathered up and disposed of a lady's rubbish for her, was friendly and polite to some over-excited lads who wanted photos with him and when the woman sitting opposite asked him what all the fuss was about, he just said 'oh, I used to play a bit of football' so modest as well.

The comedian Mark Thomas was lovely and friendly and bought a drink for me and a couple of friends at a gig.

Benedict Cumberbatch was very polite and friendly.

Noloudnoises · 19/11/2018 19:30

My (Jewish) friend met cilla and she said something faintly anti-Semitic to her whilst snidely rolling her eyes in the know to her nasty mate. Apparently a massive bitch.

chickensaresafehere · 19/11/2018 19:31

Lovely to hear Axl Rose is nice.
Anyone met Eddie Vedder? I adore him but would be a quivering wreck if I met him & if I heard he was horrible ShockSad

WishfulSprouts · 19/11/2018 19:31

My mums idol- we met Tony Hadley and his gf/wife? At a pub nearby where we were watching his show later that night went over said hi we’re coming to watch you later- he could not have been nicer - even brought us a drink! Top bloke - was very relieved as I’d forced my mum over to him she was a nervous wreck and if he’d been awful would have felt guilty but genuinely nice guy.

ItsClemFandangoCanYouHearMe · 19/11/2018 19:32

I did at a signing. He was dismissive and just plain rude.

Honestly one of my biggest regrets, I was such a huge fan and it's ruined his music for me.

Noloudnoises · 19/11/2018 19:33

Elle macpherson - vile snidey evil cow.

And her little sister is possibly the rudest person I've ever met in my entire life.

Noloudnoises · 19/11/2018 19:33

Mum met russ Abbott years ago and he was just lovely apparently!

amymel2016 · 19/11/2018 19:38

David Tennant and Sheridan Smith were so lovely.

David Walliams was arrogant and ignored everyone.

Oratorio · 19/11/2018 19:39

I met Russell Crowe and he was an absolute arse. I suppose I shouldn’t have been surprised.
Worst though has been Paul Draper, former Mansun singer. Never seen such a big ego on anyone. Totally in love with himself and thought he was God’s gift. Got shitty with me when I didn’t fall at his feet immediately begging for him to notice me. Later took a young teenage girl (about 16) back to his hotel and convinced her to give him a BJ - girl wrote to me afterwards to tell me (we had struck up a conversation at the gig, I was about 18 at the time). Ugh.
The snooker player Steve Davis was lovely, as was comedian Rhod Gilbert. Also met authors Jeffrey Deaver and Robin Hobb, the Bluetones, the Manic Street Preachers and some of Radiohead (not Thom, he is my actual idol and I was too scared to speak to him), all of whom were fab.

Thurmanmurman · 19/11/2018 19:39

I’m so pleased a PP said David Jason is lovely, I’d be gutted if he was a bastard!

AutumnB · 19/11/2018 19:40

tater it was me that asked and I'm so pleased to hear it!

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 19/11/2018 19:45

Elton John was really nice to me when I met him as a child. Another nice one was Bobby Davro, he was compering an event I was working at, and he came over to our table at lunch, introduced himself to us all and asked interesting questions about the charity we worked for. Considering it was his break, he could have sat on his own and ignored us, but he didn't.

Liam Gallagher was a prat when I met him. I quite like Oasis but he put me right off.

Actually, someone I really dislike professionally but couldn't fault personally, is Michael Gove. I abhor his politics but he is charming.

MissMarplesKnitting · 19/11/2018 19:46

Met David Seaman once, was staying in same hotel as us. What a nice guy. Bought me a glass of wine and was charming, fun company to chat to at the bar.
