Meeting Your Idols and Being Disappointed

Today I almost met somebody who has been a big figure in my life. It took ages to pluck up the courage to speak to them and I was totally dismissed. I wasn’t being a “gushing fan” and it was a setting that was laid back. Everyone else was lovely. Have tou ever met someone you admire and wish you hadn’t?

I used to hang around with Olivia Colman and her kids while working for her friend, before she became quite popular. She's so lovely! And her husband is very nice too.

There was one of these threads a few years ago where a poster insisted that Michael Palin was awful - she posted about it a few times .. but .. she did come across as fairly forceful and entitled - maybe just not his cup of tea?

Yes, she posted this on a couple of threads...MP apparently said something truly horrible to her and her DH (a huge fan) and so they got rid of his books etc. She never ever said what it was though Hmm

So because ofall the positive stories I'll continue to like him!

littlemeitslyn · 19/11/2018 15:51

Why mention it poops ?

coffeeeandtv · 19/11/2018 15:51

Many years ago I had the pleasure of meeting Caroline Ahearne, she was bringing her mum to her appointments at my work and she was an absolute delight, this was at the height of her fame and I subsequently found out that she had been suffering from mental health problems, but this not stop her from talking to people, answering their questions and telling us stories from her life which included her time on the Mrs Merton show, after working on reception at the BBC and being spoken down to by many 'slebs' she said she appreciated how lucky she was.

Whywonttheyletmeusemyusername · 19/11/2018 15:56

Absolutely not an idol of mine, but Jim Davidson was a complete arse. As was Angela Rippon. Met Matt Lucas at a private function....same as a pp....acted like a complete diva and yet not one person took a blind bit of notice of him. Davina McCall is also not so nice.

ShePoopsAConker · 19/11/2018 15:57

Ooh yes I was told horror stories by someone who worked with Paulo Nutini. It was funny as she was obviously trying to be professional and not spill, but she couldn't stop herself giving him a right slagging off.

abacucat · 19/11/2018 15:58

HORSE who was a minor celebrity at the time complained loudly to a celebrity about people not leaving her alone, as everyone was ignoring her. I hadn't a clue who she was.

ShePoopsAConker · 19/11/2018 15:58

Jim Davidson was a complete arse

I would be disappointed if he wasn't! :o He can't be anyone's idol surely

ShePoopsAConker · 19/11/2018 15:59

Ha ha I have met Horse. I had also never heard of her.

Myheartbelongsto · 19/11/2018 16:01

I met Mariah Carey once and she was very nice. I was interviewed by MTV too but did give out a little bit that she had kept us waiting.

Met Jon Bongiovi loads of times and he has always been lovely.

Years ago I bumped into an actress from East Enders and she was rude but looking back she probably had enough of been asked if she was on telly when she just wanted to do a bit of clothes shopping.

whyyyyyyyy · 19/11/2018 16:10

I went to a wedding last summer where 'RICKKKYYY' from eastenders was also a guest. He wore sunglasses to the reception and for breakfast in the hotel the next morning. He also sat on his own. Literally no one could care less. Grin

BelfortGabbz · 19/11/2018 16:14

Jon Bongiovi Grin

GraceMarks · 19/11/2018 16:15

I used to work in a chain coffee shop and one time Harry Hill came in, dressed exactly as he used to do on TV Burp. He was grinning broadly and looking around him in a "yes, it's really me!" sort of way, as if expecting to be mobbed. Nobody even looked at him. He drank his coffee and left looking quite chastened - I almost felt sorry for him! He seemed perfectly pleasant but perhaps a little bit up himself.

LucieMorningstar · 19/11/2018 16:16

When RW left Take That all those years ago, he was on holiday in Spain (or Portugal, I can’t remember exactly) and my Aunt and her family were there too. He spent time with her kids in the sea etc. They gave me a photo of him in the sea with his bleach blonde hair.

TheFreaksShallInheritTheEarth · 19/11/2018 16:16

That's the real spelling, Belfort

ZanZeeee · 19/11/2018 16:16

@coffeeandtv lovely story. CA is the greatest comedian of all time as far as I’m
concerned. I watch the Royle Family over and over and never get bored of it. Life was far from kind to her and it made me a bit teary to read that she was just as lovely and humble as I’d hoped in RL.

LucieMorningstar · 19/11/2018 16:19

@BelfortGabbz

My eldest son referred to him as Jon Bovi the other day. Thought that was hilarious as I couldn’t figure out who he meant (“that’s a new one on me” I said trying to work out who it was). It wasn’t until he said “you know, ‘living on a prayer’?”. 😂

pontiouspilates · 19/11/2018 16:21

Oh Rosie not Jeremy! We love Monkey World and when my kids were little Id make up bedtime
stories for them with Jeremy as the Monkey rescuing hero. You
live and learn....

Underpressureidiot · 19/11/2018 16:24

Another one, just remembered - was in a queue to see Santa with rod stewart a long time ago. He was invited to cut the line but he insisted on waiting their turn. That’s class.

MadisonAvenue · 19/11/2018 16:25

Lovely to read about Caroline Aherne.

Every time Peter Kay is mentioned on threads like this (and not just on here) people say that, from personal experience, he's an absolute arse. I don't think I've ever seen anyone contradict them.

I met Billie Joe Armstrong in New York a few years ago when he was in his Broadway musical and he was really lovely; very chatty and friendly.

Oldbutstillgotit · 19/11/2018 16:32

Lulu was a first class bitch when I met her . A friend also met her on another occasion and said she was vile. Zoe Ball was lovely when DD and I met her . DB once worked with Gabby Logan and didn’t have a good word to say about her.

pumpastrotter · 19/11/2018 16:35

I've met quite a few rock bands, though probably not on the average Mumsnetter's radar (through work - never a groupie btw! although my friends have a few stories). Pete Wentz (fallout boy) is a catastrophic arsehole.
An ex was friends with Lost Prophets, we met the band and all lovely - except Ian Watkins.. it was more of an arrogant twat vibe though than picking up on what he actually was Sad.

Met quite a few comedians at the fringe, not had a bad one. Phil Jupitus took the piss out of me but it was funny not unkind, Stephen K Amos was much quieter off stage but seemed very gracious, Ed Byrne is lovely.

Ewan McGregor was very nice, but he hadn't left his wife when we met and I had heard stories about his philandering so took him with a pinch of salt.

My uncle is (randomly) friendly with Trevor McDonald, very nice man who likes gardening.

noego · 19/11/2018 16:42

They shit just like the rest of us you know :)

sosmooth · 19/11/2018 16:43

shatnerswig I agree but at least a smile rather than just a no and the people he was with didn't need to roll their eyes and tut.
If you want to be famous then accept that you will get people asking you for pics etc. and no they don't have to oblige but being polite isn't hard.

Howhot · 19/11/2018 17:05

My cousin met her idol Taylor swift. She could not be nicer and puts you at ease very quickly. Chatty, interested and very friendly. This was an organised meet. I've only ever heard lovely things about TS.

Another friend is very good friends with a z list reality star who is polite to fans but she admits it's gets very annoying when they're out for food or drinks and you get people who interrupt for pics etc when they just want to chill and hang out. Apparently if people loiter too much my friend politely asks if they can be left in peace now because some people don't take the hint. The 'celeb' can't bring herself to ask people to leave though but my friend doesn't mind appearing rude and dismissive on her behalf ConfusedGrin
