Meeting Your Idols and Being Disappointed

Today I almost met somebody who has been a big figure in my life. It took ages to pluck up the courage to speak to them and I was totally dismissed. I wasn’t being a “gushing fan” and it was a setting that was laid back. Everyone else was lovely. Have tou ever met someone you admire and wish you hadn’t?

Ooh that reminds me now someone’s mentioned it - my Aunt was in the bar at the Dorchester about 5 years ago and Brian May was in there. She and my Incle decided not to bother them but slyly gawped our of the corner of their eye. A young couple were celebrating their engagement and when BM left the hotel, they were sent over a bottle of champagne courtesy of BM himself. What a gentleman.

Bluesmartiesarebest · 19/11/2018 14:58

Judge Rinder is lovely. He’s charming and very funny.

Ulrika Johnson is friendly and seemed very normal.

EstuaryBird · 19/11/2018 15:00

I met my idol, Axl Rose, and he was absolutely lovely. A really genuine guy, full eye contact when he spoke to you and when I got a bit fahe shook my hand. Love him to bits.

DarlingNikita · 19/11/2018 15:01

Another vote for Michael Palin being lovely too, I have a friend who worked for a company he'd regularly order from and everytime he got in touch he'd ask how everyone was doing and what they'd all been up to

Oh, I just adore him. If I met him and he was a grouch I'd be heartbroken.

PrincessConsuelaBananahamm0ck · 19/11/2018 15:07

I met Jason Donovan recently, someone I fell deeply in love with when I was approximately 7 years old. I was worried he'd be a disappointment, however he was lovely despite being in a hurry. If I ever got to meet Kylie I think my life would be complete.

Roeslein · 19/11/2018 15:11

I ran into Rose Leslie in the tube once (I noticed her hair first!), she was lovely and looked stunning.

Sparklingbrook · 19/11/2018 15:12

I would never go up to a celebrity if I saw them in RL.

Not a David Tennant/Dr Who fan but he does look the sort who would be nice and smell nice too. Grin

I can't really think of anyone I would like to meet.

Sparklesocks · 19/11/2018 15:12

I met Nick Frost too, he was a total sweetie and happy to chat – this was at a club night a couple of years or so after Shaun of the Dead came out, I think just before Hot Fuzz had. Really lovely bloke, I’m glad he’s doing so well.

Got chatting to Fearne Cotton at a bar once too, she was nice enough.

I saw comedian Russell Kane in a London pub once wearing sunglasses (even though it was inside..and at night!) and he seemed to be trying to get people to notice him…

My friend met Steve Coogan at a work thing, he was very polite and friendly…especially to any women in the room!

My dad is always bumping into famous people. He’s met Helen Mirren, Lee Evans, Bruce Willis…all nice apart from Helen who was a bit abrupt and very sweary! Although I suppose you might catch people on a bad day occasionally…

BirthdayCakes · 19/11/2018 15:14

There was one of these threads a few years ago where a poster insisted that Michael Palin was awful - she posted about it a few times .. but .. she did come across as fairly forceful and entitled - maybe just not his cup of tea?

AdobeWanKenobi · 19/11/2018 15:18

Brian May is lovely I concur. Have met many but the one who stands out was probably Carrie Fisher not long before she died. She was engaging, eccentric and absolutely lovely. A very sad day when she died.

BonnesVacances · 19/11/2018 15:21

Michael Palin once said on Wogan (so a very very long time ago) that even if he committed murder, people would still say he's such a lovely bloke. He often seems bemused by how popular he is.

ShePoopsAConker · 19/11/2018 15:22

I can totally believe Craig Revel Horwood is a sweetie. I always think he'd be a very funny, kind friend.

BonnesVacances · 19/11/2018 15:23

Can also vouch for how vile Peter Kay is. Not just to the public, but people he works with too. His happy friendly persona is definitely not real!

AriadnePersephoneCloud · 19/11/2018 15:25

I don't idolise people and have never purposefully approached a celeb (or zleb). But Jade Goody was very sweet when my very young neice repeatedly whacked her with a balloon when we were in a queue for something once.

paap1975 · 19/11/2018 15:28

In my former job I used to meet lots and lots of famous musicians. They are ordinary people, who just like everyone else like to have a bit of down time.
This may have been a bad time, or the person might just not be very outgoing, just like any ordinary person.
Being famous doesn't make someone public property. It's hard work not having any privacy.

Mewe · 19/11/2018 15:28

I ran into Mark Gatiss in Oxford Street and talked about how much I loved his documentaries on Horror Films & his role in “Nighty Nighty”. He was ever so lovely and even suggested a picture together where he did the “Glenn” pose! I think he was chuffed he had been complimented for something other than Sherlock/ League of Gentlemen. Lovely man.

Don’t have any rude sleb stories... sorry OP.

Lovewineandchocs · 19/11/2018 15:32

My friend and I met Selma Blair a few years ago and she was absolutely lovely. Not my idol really, but I do love Legally Blonde and Cruel Intentions. I’ve met Darren Day and Chris Tarrant, both were twats but that was no surprise. James Nesbitt and Ray Meagher are both lovely, and so is Harlan Coben who is one of my favourite authors.

SnowWhitesRestingBitchFace · 19/11/2018 15:34

I met Ronan Keating at an airport once about 20 odd years ago and he was lovely! As was his wife at the time.

He was stood next to us and my mum (who was a huge Boyzone fan) recognised him but wasn't sure why 🤦🏻‍♀️

It took some convincing before she believed who it was.

Also met the band 5ive around the same time (I was obsessed with them) and they were all amazing and I got to give Scott a kiss on the cheek!

Rudgie47 · 19/11/2018 15:37

paap1975 When you go into that line of work you know the score. Theres no excuse to be a total vile person/unkind and horrid to people just because you are on the T.V.

GoldenCurls · 19/11/2018 15:39

I saw a Liverpool player out shopping in Liverpool One a few weeks ago.

He looked so moody at being asked for photos with people. I do sympathise as it must get incredibly annoying, but maybe don’t go into Liverpool city centre on a Sunday afternoon when you play for Liverpool!

littlemeitslyn · 19/11/2018 15:42

Greendale totally disagree

DarlingNikita · 19/11/2018 15:45

Mewe, Mark Gatiss's 'lesser-known work is so good, isn't it? I'm in awe of his knowledge of horror. And I don't know if you saw his recent doc on the artist John Minton but that was terrific too. He's very eclectic, passionate and thoughtful in his interests.

inlectorecumbit · 19/11/2018 15:45

Marti Pellow David Tennant and Andy Murray (?celebrity) were all lovely when l bumped into them and Marti even offered me one of his chips.Grin
Paulo Nuttini on the otherhand......twat doesn't cover it

DarlingNikita · 19/11/2018 15:47

Marti even offered me one of his chips

That is classy. I've read some not good things about him but I think better of him now Grin

FurryDogMother · 19/11/2018 15:48

I've met a few over the years:

Janice Long - totally lovely, funny and chatty
Tony Blackburn - love him, lots of fun and very willing to muck in with stuff
Charlton Heston - friendly, down to earth, appreciative (of coffee I made for him)
Patrick Moore - totally batty, forgot to put his shoes on before leaving, but a genuinely nice man
Noel Edmonds - as a PP said, not too nice
Daniel Day-Lewis - top bloke :D
Michael Winner - am surprised people have found him to be nice (enough said!)
David Jason - very unassuming, friendly, funny
Don Estelle - probably my favourite famous person that I've met
Bernard Ingham (Maggie Thatcher's press secretary) - surprisingly 'human' - laughed when I almost squished him behind a door :)
Lord Snowdon - I was a bit terrified (royal connections and all that) but he put me at ease, told funny stories and just came across as a nice man

Some of those above are sort of idols to me, but not all!
