Meeting Your Idols and Being Disappointed

Today I almost met somebody who has been a big figure in my life. It took ages to pluck up the courage to speak to them and I was totally dismissed. I wasn’t being a “gushing fan” and it was a setting that was laid back. Everyone else was lovely. Have tou ever met someone you admire and wish you hadn’t?

In 1982 aged 11 my idol was Tom Baker, I was a big Dr Who fan. He'd just finished playing the Doctor and I met him!!! He was lovely, made me feel really important and wrote a card for me that said ‘To Captain, Happy days, love Tom Baker’ which unfortunately has been lost in the mists of time and house moves 😭

It still remains the greatest day of my life - sorry (not sorry) DH and DS

ThanosSavedMe · 24/11/2018 08:24

Chatted to jo brand, we were in the park supporting our dh’s as they were doing a 10k run. Utterly lovely, charming, funny and warm. Total opposite of how I thought she’d be.

Met mark Owen in a lift, absolutely gorgeous and friendly I was a gibberish wreck (even though I’d never fancied him) and he politely ignored this and just chatted away. He was probably used to it

Boyzone were all utter arseholes so up themselves

Michael Hutchence arrogant twat - that was disappointing

sadeyedladyofthelowlands63 · 24/11/2018 10:06

Oh, I was with my brother when we met someone he was a huge fan of in the early 80s: Fish from Marillion. He signed an autograph for DB. DB said "Thank you", and Fish replied. "No... Thank YOU"

I met and chatted to Fish several times in the early '80s. Lovely, lovely, lovely man.

GabsAlot · 24/11/2018 13:04

ineed -i met nik kerhaw he was lovely very quiet

TooManyPaws · 24/11/2018 17:09

Not an idol or a 'sleb' as such but knew Gordon Brown reasonably well for a while through politics. Lovely man though shy, but good at publically meeting people; I don't think most people realise just how bad his eyesight is. Fanatical football supporter, devoted father and down to earth in general, perfectly at home in the pub with a pint in his hand, talking to retired miners. Still got a bottle of House of Commons whisky that he signed for my dad; Dad used to top it up with Tesco whisky and make a fuss of serving it to Tory visitors... 😂

Blair was just artificial and slimy all round - he stuck his hand in my face, I automatically shook it, and then after he'd passed along the street a yard or so, realised what I'd done and carefully wiped it on my jacket; Jack McConnell was standing beside Blair and nearly wetting himself laughing.

WendyWoofer · 24/11/2018 20:21

@WendyWooferI might have cried if Brian Blessed had been on the 'arse' list! DH and I are both huge John Tams fans and thankfully he's just the loveliest man

He is the loveliest man I've ever met. So down to Earth and had time for everyone.

I can totally see why some celebrities get pissed off with all and sundry wanting pics, autographs etc during their time off. I couldn't cope having to be "nice" 100% of the time. We all need time to relax and enjoy time with friends and family, without constant outside interference.

SorenLorensonsInvisibleFriend · 24/11/2018 20:41

Bob Mortimer is adorable.

Toddlerteaplease · 24/11/2018 20:53

Daniel O' Donnell came to my ward to cost a patient with Special needs who had tickets for his visit very but had been in hospital almost a year and couldn't go. He was lovely to her.

NatureIs · 24/11/2018 21:47

Princess Anne was friendly and seemed interested (even though she probably didn't care about what a bunch of 10 year olds were doing)! She seemed the no nonsense type.

Grotbags was fun, warm, friendly and green!

A friend met Barbara Windsor when she was doing something with the Scouts/Guides. Apparently nice as pie when the press were there, putting on the "show", the laugh etc but was completely different the rest of the time and not in a good way.
It's weird hearing people gushing over celebs when you've heard a completely different story.

Wingingthis · 24/11/2018 21:50

I met bill nighy and he was lovely!

Was that before or after she was diagnosed with dementia?

I live close to Alison Hammond and have bumped into her a few times. She is absolutely lovely and always see her stopping to chat to people.
My friend and her girls were in the hairdressers with her when she was on strictly. She was showing them her moves for that week. They love the show so were delighted!

MrsBosh · 25/11/2018 09:20

Thanks to reading this thread in the middle of the night BFing, I had a dream I met Alan Sugar Hmm he was lovely in the dream!

WishfulSprouts · 25/11/2018 09:25

Not me but my sister was sitting with her boyfriend who was in army hospital after being severely injured in Afghanistan. One day John Bishop popped in to see them all she said he spend ages with each and every patient spent the entire day there and said he seemed like such a lovely caring bloke.

MrsJayy · 25/11/2018 11:23

Jack McConnel was my Dhs maths teacher. Rubbishest claim to fame ever Grin

NatureIs · 25/11/2018 14:49

SerenDippitty it was in the 90s.

MrsPob · 25/11/2018 15:00

Met John Barrowman in a hotel lift in London a few years ago. He was very super cheerful and friendly. And shorter than he looks on tv!

Marioki · 25/11/2018 17:34

I can also confirm John Barrowman is lovely. Unfortunately just before I met him I'd had a massive row with my now ex-boyfriend so I may have been a bit off with him. Sorry John.
Also lovely, in my experience, were Archie Gemmill, Danny John-Jules, Roy Barraclough, Bill Dean{ Harry Cross from Brookside}, Doreen Sloane{Annabelle Collins from Brookside}, and Helen Forrester.

Kenny Baker was a bit miserable but I think he may have been slightly deaf and I'm very quietly spoken which may have caused some frustration. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.
I didn't meet him but I once saw Matt Lucas leave a gift shop over here with two minders/body guards and it made me think he was probably a diva.
@strawberrisc - You don't have to name them but you confirm if the person has been mentioned yet in this thread.

strawberrisc · 25/11/2018 17:57

@Marioki no not yet but I adore the Helen Forrester books but MANY years ago we were going to put on a production of “Tuppence to Cross the Mersey” and she threatened to sue us!

It was a school play!

OP posts:
Marioki · 25/11/2018 18:01

Wow really? There's no excuse for that. She seemed very nice when I met her but this was during a book promotion so I guess she had to be nice.

Anasnake · 25/11/2018 18:07

That's copyright, you have to pay for the right to stage it, happens all the time.

orphanblack1 · 25/11/2018 18:11

Rick Stein and he was bloody miserable. Then we had an awful meal at his restaurant. Has totally spoilt my love of his programmes.
