i was wondering if things goes toes up and there are food shortages, what happens with people who can't afford to -hoard- store up goods i.e the elderly and people on very tight budgets already living hand to mouth relying on food banks ?

The UK doesn't produce plenty of food; we produce 40% and import 60%. And thats just an average, we obviously don't produce any olive oil.

We could produce a lot more if the will was there to invest in an infrastructure. Fish, salad and vegetable farming could take place in double glazed greenhouses all year round in our climate.

Treacletoots · 18/11/2018 16:06

I think the general lack of understanding of how much (or how little) the UK actually makes itself is the cause of a lot of people's nonchalance to this situation.

I'm just grateful we have a large allotment and farms nearby where we can buy milk, eggs and other locally produced products so we'll be fine as long as we don't mind living on scrambled eggs ...

TwittleBee · 18/11/2018 16:11

DH and I were talking about this last night actually. We aren't well off, we live month to month with 0 savings. Plus he works for a French company and I work in the housing industry so 2 jobs that are going to be vulnerable potentially.

Worse comes to worse we would just have to move in with my mum i reckon. Although I know my sisters would probably need to do the same too. We just thank our stars that we do have a very close and supportive family.

Menarefrommarsitwouldseem · 18/11/2018 16:13

I do live rurally and I still laugh at people's reactions to the snow.

The beast from the east didn't help with supplies no, however, the shelves wouldn't have been as empty had people not been panic buying bread and milk.
A couple of extra loaves yes. The amount of people I saw with stupid amounts of everything. Over dramatic and selfish.

It'll be the same with brexit.

everythingisginandroses · 18/11/2018 16:14

Stockpiling here. The govt and Brexiteers generally have no fucking clue what they are doing.

LellyMcKelly · 18/11/2018 16:24

That’s the real worry, everythingisginsndroses. If I thought for one minute that anyone in power had even the vaguest idea what they were doing I’d feel a lot calmer, but the evidence suggests they know no more than we do. I’m getting in an extra few kilos of lentils and toilet rolls.

ForalltheSaints · 18/11/2018 16:27

A valid point from the OP should it come to higher prices or shortages. I think there is the possibility of panic buying just before March 29th even if there is a deal.

Graphista · 18/11/2018 16:39

BarbarianMum - as has been repeatedly said there's ALREADY people literally starving in this country. Malnourished, sick, dying.

There's a number of areas due to go "live" on UC in March 2019 too - as I think a pp already said - perfect storm!

Don'talltalkatonce - yes I think I pointed out on another brexit thread that people has a rose-tinted view of how it was during ww2 - there was looting not only of bombed buildings but of the bodies or stunned survivors were mugged!

Crime was rife as the able bodied police officers were serving plus greatly reduced numbers of police and black marketeers did very well indeed. There was as you say a rise in malnutrition and associated conditions (which combined with bomb "dust", disrupted water supply etc meant that not everyone who died as a result of the war did so before 1946)

"I doubt a lot of people using that argument know what the reality of rationing was." Definitely agree - I have a great aunt who was an arp warden who I talk to about this kinda thing sometimes and she has some tales to tell! The saddest is that younger children were often sent to bed earlier than before the war as if they were asleep they weren't consciously aware of their hunger and asking for food.

BigChocFrenzy - I think people also forget we are a SMALL island we haven't a lot of square footage for all this magical storage!

"We could produce a lot more if the will was there to invest in an infrastructure." I remember reading some time back that this would take at least a year to implement.

Ohmno · 18/11/2018 16:47

Pfft nothing to worry about fake news the lot of it along with Sir Donald were going to make the anglosphere great again plays rule brittania and leaves the thread

Gingerrogered · 18/11/2018 16:47

Oh for Christ's sake. How much are you paid to spout this propaganda OP?

You're obviously hugely uninformed and don't bother reading the papers or watching the news, which shows just how much credence your opinion should have.

Let me enlighten you. We now have a choice between becoming a vassal state of the EU, having no say on their laws but having to follow them. Or remain. We were never going to be allowed to leave, May has very carefully constructed a deal so bad, we have no choice but to remain.

We are going to remain in some form of ano

everythingisginandroses · 18/11/2018 17:05

OK, Ginger, I take back what I just said. On reflection, May is some kind of political genius. Chapeau!

Still buying extra tins & packets all the same Grin

Jason118 · 18/11/2018 17:06

Ginger, what's your point about the food concerns though?

Gingerrogered · 18/11/2018 17:06

*We're going to remain in one form of another

You've won. You've won by using the tactics of the USSR and every other regime in history.

You've won because, like the supporters of every single oppressive regime in history, you view your opponents views as worthless and their persons sub human

I hope that it keeps you want at night when you go to bed with your Nazi/Communist ideas about your ideology being right and your beliefs being so great even if millions of your fellow citizens disagree, they should have your will forced on them.

The way remained behave - must maintain the integrity of the bloc, even if it comes to starving us and denying us medicine until enough of us have died so we beg to come back - it's exactly what the YEAR did.

RedneckStumpy · 18/11/2018 17:07

Are we really one of the richest countries in the world???

@namechanger yes the UK is one of the rich countries. This is as good as life gets.

RedneckStumpy · 18/11/2018 17:11

The UK is facing a perfect storm, a failed harvest, followed by a very cold winter. This coupled with UC means that a hard Brexit is going to be catastrophic.

The UK has lost the art of self reliance. The space, skills and attitude have long gone.

Hop for the best plan for the worst. However a tough few years of civil unrest, shortages and a falling economy may be the kick in the ass the country needs to get back on track.

lljkk · 18/11/2018 17:12

Pointedly bringing every part of the political debate back to arguments why established institutions should not be trusted: classic Russian disinformation strategy.

lljkk · 18/11/2018 17:13

*also promoting conspiracy theories why not to trust anyone in authority

RedneckStumpy · 18/11/2018 17:14

The US are not going to start aid drops. Brexit is self inflicted.

Where would they fly from, the closest USAF base would be Rammstein Germany.

Jason118 · 18/11/2018 17:20

Lakenheath?

RedneckStumpy · 18/11/2018 17:20

The amount of people I saw with stupid amounts of everything. Over dramatic and selfish

That’s human nature, the polite civilized veneer very quickly disappears during hard times

Jason118 · 18/11/2018 17:20

I think ginger is a bit poorly, bless

wondering1101 · 18/11/2018 17:21

The EU is really not an oppressive regime.

And no remain have not “won”. There is no Leave paradise - May and co have done what they could precisely to try to avoid the potential fallout of no deal.

I don’t think May is a remainer in any case. Maybe a pragmatic one, but that’s it.

The people we really have to question are the likes of Jacob Rees-Mogg.

RedneckStumpy · 18/11/2018 17:24

Lakenheath yes Mildenhall too.

However they still need to get food into those UK bases.

MyBrexitIsIll · 18/11/2018 17:26

ginger the very big issue here is that

  • if the U.K. stays in the EU (or maybe too if we have a soft Brexit, TM style), it seems that millions of people in the U.K. will be very disappointed because they didn’t vote for that.
  • if the U.K. leaves thenEU, No Deal/hard brexitbstyle, you will still have millions of people gutted by the results because they didn’t vote for that either (that’s all the Remainers AND those who wanted a soft Brexit).

In any case, no one will have won. That’s the saddest part of this whole shitbag.
No one will ever win or regardless of what the decision is at the end, we, as a country, will have lost imo.

bellinisurge · 18/11/2018 17:28

I'm a prepper and regularly haunt the prepper boards. I entirely get your worry. Why would I or any other prepper flame you for having little money? That's just silly.
I can only suggest adding an extra cheapo tin here and there if and when you get chance. And say, basics white rice or whatever carb works for you and yours.
I don't know your personal circumstances. I'm really sorry if you find my suggestions patronising. Do you have anyone to pal up with?
Your local church might be a source of info about accessing food.
