I know Brexit has been done to death and I'm not asking for anyone's justification for wanting out or in.

I'm just really curious to know if any of the folks who voted leave have changed their minds (as is sometimes reported by the Guardian).

I voted remain. I'd still vote remain. I'd also still go for a coffee with anyone who voted leave and avoid discussing politics. We need to find some common ground now and work towards ensuring that the current political climate improves.

OftenHangry · 13/11/2018 19:20

@harshbuttrue1980 who do you suggest will work in central distribution centres, warehouses and factories? Because these would get the strongest hit when it comes to staffing.

marvellousnightforamooncup · 13/11/2018 19:20

Still remain.

bahhumbuggery · 13/11/2018 19:21

I blame Trump, Putin an that Arron bloke.

We have no idea how we are being manipulated.

Roussette · 13/11/2018 19:29

Great post Figural. You have put it so well

harshbuttrue1980 · 13/11/2018 19:30

Often, if jobs can't be filled, then the wages will have to rise until they can be. That's the economics of demand and supply. I don't agree with using immigrant labour as a way to avoid raising wages to a decent level.

Companies like Amazon etc can well afford to raise their wages to a level which would attract UK workers. It is disgusting that they get away with paying so low knowing that immigrant workers will take the jobs and live in squalid, overcrowded accommodation. No worker should have to live like that.

PumpkinKitty82 · 13/11/2018 19:33

I voted remain because I’m not an idiot and would do it again and again .
Too late now, we are all going down

Horsfordiansunite · 13/11/2018 19:34

I don’t think there’s much we can do now. Theresa’s already categorically refused to allow another vote. I’m not sure how the erg or dup will react when it really comes down to it.
Part of me just thinks bring it on no deal or whatever. I have a reasonably secure job with skills that will always be in demand, paid off mortgage, some savings. Do worry about my kids but they are bright and know there’s a whole world out there. They’ve travelled beyond the costas and see that life abroad can be just as good. Just sad that those with less secure employment and less marketable skills will really suffer

MrsMWA · 13/11/2018 19:39

Nope OUT! European army, fuck that. My son won’t fight and die under the flag of Europe.

@Roussette rising wages so it would attract natives will logically mean rising prices.
Main fault lies with consumers who want everything cheap and would go berserk over price rises IME.

Re the squalor condition. It is a disgrace, however, many actually live in that so they can send money back home. But anyway, living conditions are a bit different (really important) issue - pushing landlords to have actually habitable properties.

Even though I actually agree there should be some simple checks on border such as a criminal record for serious offences, I absolutely disagree with taking in just highly skilled labour. Many of us with "just" an equivalent of Alevels would never get in and many of us are actually now employing people and creating jobs. Lots of jobs. What do people who want just highly skilled immigrants in the UK propose happens to not highly skilled ones already here?

Well, they won't be capable of doing the jobs we need immigrants for anyway will they but, such as in the case a pp mentioned of dentists, they might however benefit from them.

Longdistance · 13/11/2018 19:50

Voted leave. I’d still vote leave. The world will still spin, we’ll still be the ones with the money. That’s why the EU leaders are being shitty. Their wetting their knickers.

therewillbetime · 13/11/2018 19:52

Haven't read the full thread but how refreshing to see (from oracleofdelphi) the point that some remainers have grossly generalised the make up of the leave voter.

Before the vote I spoke to several people from varying walks of life and age range, widely travelled, in positions of continued learning and development and who were highly educated. After much research they all voted to leave.

I have heard remainers call leavers racist, bigoted, selfish and small-minded which I find to be absolutely disgusting. And some people that I know who were originally remainers have said they would actually now vote leave partly due to such behaviour. It is far from clear cut, and those who think and therefore behave as though it is need to have a word with themselves.

SweetestThing · 13/11/2018 19:56

I doubt very much they're wetting their knickers. We import a greater amount from the EU than we export. We will have to negotiate a whole load of trade deals with the EU and with countries outside the EU where we've benefitted from the EU-negotiated trade deals (some 12% of British exports).

SweetestThing · 13/11/2018 19:57

I think that not everyone who voted Leave is racist or bigoted but I also think that every bigot or racist voted Leave. I hate the way that there's been a very visible rise racist in language since the referendum because some people think they've been given a mandate to behave in this way.

OftenHangry · 13/11/2018 19:58

@MuddlingMackem so UK really doesn't need anyone who is business minded/potential jobs creator and skilled in anything less than what requires at least a bachelors? I am really sorry, but that is actually a ridiculous notion. Every country needs people like this.

Again though. What do people who want just highly skilled immigrants in the UK propose happens to not highly skilled ones already here?

bahhumbuggery · 13/11/2018 20:00

It is good to debate, but I think it is wasted.

The Government will do what they have been mandated to do.

Tomorrow could be interesting.

Who invaded Iraq? The US and UK, and not France nor Germany. Yeah, being in an EU army would definitely be worse for Britain. Hmm

llangennith · 13/11/2018 20:07

Nope.

A580Hojas · 13/11/2018 20:18

I don't think many people who voted Leave will have the balls to admit they have now changed their minds on a thread like this. I don't think there are all that many Leavers in the Mumsnet demographic either, tbh.

I don't know anyone who voted Leave apart from my step mother (aged 72) and pil (72 and 77) and rather oddly a really good friend who is old Labour working class East End of London type. He is in his 60s though so all of my experience is that older people voted Leave.

I am still deeply unhappy and agitated about it all, as are my teens.

SweetestThing · 13/11/2018 20:24

I can buck the trend, A580Hojas :) - DH and I were late 50s at the time of the referendum and we both voted Remain, as did most of our friends of similar age. We examined the facts, did our research and concluded that Remain was best for the UK as a whole and for our children and their children - the next generations are the ones who will bear the full impact of leaving the EU.

MyNameIsArthur · 13/11/2018 20:26

Reading with interest...

Togaandsandals · 13/11/2018 20:30

Voted remain then, would vote remain now.
