Brexit -have you changed your mind??

I know Brexit has been done to death and I'm not asking for anyone's justification for wanting out or in.

I'm just really curious to know if any of the folks who voted leave have changed their minds (as is sometimes reported by the Guardian).

Not being goady but can I ask any leave voters on here what changes do they envisage once we leave ? Presumably the Tories will still be in power so what will be different and what improvements can we expect to see. What regulations will be changed that have had a negative impact on their lives ?

You voted leave so what do you hope will be better ? And I say this to find a modicum of positivity in the situation.

Talkstotrees · 13/11/2018 17:14

@nottakingthisanymore

The cost annual cost is around £8/9bn.

A CBI literature review suggests that the net benefit of EU membership to the UK could be in the region of 4-5% of GDP or £62bn-£78bn a year – roughly the economies of the North East and Northern Ireland taken together.

Of course it also includes membership of many science/medicine/art/culture/security initiatives.

Pretty good value really 👍

OP No. Remain.

Leapfrog44 · 13/11/2018 17:14

@OracleofDelphi - that's interesting that you voted leave despite trading with the EU. I WAS a business owner entirely dependent on trade with the EU - both buying all stock and selling most of it. I closed down in fear of what will happen if we get no deal. People thought I jumped ship too early but I'm relieved I did now.
I'm not interested in passing judgement on anyone's decision or reasons, I know it's been done to death.
I just wanted to know if these mind-changers really exist!

@Horsfordiansunite I hear the search function is a handy device.

SweetestThing · 13/11/2018 17:15

Voted Remain and would still vote Remain. While it's impossible to predict exactly what will happen after we leave, the signs from so many sources (people who are genuine experts in their economic/financial/scientific fields, the number of companies who are no longer seeing GB as a European hub, with the consequent loss of jobs as HQs move elsewhere, the challenge of the NI/Eiro border issue) are that it will be anything but plain sailing.

The EU may not be perfect (what is?) but the UK had the opportunity to influence from within while enjoying very favourable concessions.

Personally, I think it will be very damaging in the short-term but also in the medium- to long-term. I will carry on campaigning for a People's Vote on the final deal, including the option to remain, because there's no way we should be bound by a (non-binding, advisory only) referendum when the facts weren't known. Surely it's democratic to have the opportunity to vote now the facts have become clear?

ilovesooty · 13/11/2018 17:16

Interesting that someone said upthread they hardly know anyone who voted remain. Only a handful of my colleagues and friends voted leave. One has changed her mind. I think my sister and brother in law might have done but I don't know.

Leapfrog44 · 13/11/2018 17:16

@bofsy1 but I guess it will get chucked out by Parliament!

harshbuttrue1980 · 13/11/2018 17:17

I still want to leave. The eu is a morally bankrupt protectionist organisation that forces us to put tariffs on non members, raising our prices and hurting the poorest countries. I also want a skills based immigration system where we welcome the best immigrants from whichever they come from, not just a free for all from Europe.

SweetestThing · 13/11/2018 17:17

Some facts about the EU accounts and their signing off.

SweetestThing · 13/11/2018 17:19

We've always had the ability to control our own immigration.

Leapfrog44 · 13/11/2018 17:20

@ilovesooty There are clear pockets of leavers and remainers and I guess they stick together. No one I've met personally has changed their minds.

No. It’s was then, and still is today, a stupid bloody idea.

Leapfrog44 · 13/11/2018 17:22

@Hemlock2013 I was really trying to avoid a vitriolic thread. Just wanted to know about mind changers

We do not know what the EA contains that now seems to be on the cards tonight. Any guesses? I reckon the Backstop is one of them. DUP may not be enthralled, but feck them sorry now. 10 MPs running the show for all of us?

Will be interesting to see what happens.

@ Leapfrog44 that may be the case, but it's now or never.

Fatasfook · 13/11/2018 17:23

Was remain before, I’m even more remain now.

EmeraldShamrock · 13/11/2018 17:23

Who doesn't but you do not get the choose who you prefer. I do get what you mean, there are lots arrived in Ireland who are never ever going to work. It is not a selection box that the UK gets to choose the best bits.

Horsfordiansunite · 13/11/2018 17:29

Reflections What would I put in said search engine then ? If you voted leave you must have some aspirations for how you hope it turns out ....why be sarcastic Hmm

Well, if we leave, presumably the UK does get to choose which immigrants it allows in (and not just from EU countries).

I have not changed my mind since voting in referendum. The atmosphere has become so poisonous (generally, not particularly singling out this thread/website) I've no wish to engage further with anyone about my vote and my reasons for it.

EmeraldShamrock · 13/11/2018 17:40

Presuming is hopeful, lots of the EU companies will leave the UK, along with the current skilled workers you have.

SweetestThing · 13/11/2018 17:43

We already have the choice over immigration. See my previous post.

Scribbles2018 · 13/11/2018 17:45

OracleofDelphi excellent post and I couldn't agree with you more. Especially your points about Malta and Cyprus.

Some of my reasons.

  1. Once a month at a cost of £150M a year the EU moves between Brussels and Strasvourg because they couldn't agree on where to Base the Head Office.
  1. MEP's are allowed £213,000 per year to pay for an assistant. They use a loophole so that they can employ close relations including children and wives.
  1. MEP'S allowed to earn £91,000 a year in "daily subsistence" and " general expenditure" expenses without having to provide any receipts or proof of expenditure.
Just feel like it's a big fat gravy train
Scribbles2018 · 13/11/2018 17:46

Strasbourg

JaceLancs · 13/11/2018 17:51

I won’t be changing my mind
No one else I know is planning on changing theirs either
Seems to apply to those who voted out as well as in

harshbuttrue1980 · 13/11/2018 17:52

Emerald, of course we will have the choice. Australia operates a points based immigration system which works perfectly well. People could apply to come to the UK, and they would get points for their skills and qualifications. If we had a shortage of, for example, dentists, then we allocate lots of points for dentistry skills and let in immigrants who meet the points needed. Those without the points would be denied entry. Its a practical, fair and pragmatic way to deal with immigration rather than having either the current free for all.

Horsfordian, to answer your question, that is a change that I think will occur when we leave the EU.

bahhumbuggery · 13/11/2018 17:54

Show me a Government that is squeaky clean please?

I am not saying it is right, but it happens. Everywhere, not just in so called corrupt countries. UK is not a paragon of virtue either re Westminster is it?
