To be really angry my DD took my coffee on a weekend away, without asking?

I’m an early riser. I have sleep issues (wake up and can’t get back to sleep), so I follow a fairly strict sleep hygiene routine. That includes no caffeine after 10am. I also have digestion issues and diverticulitis so I need to be “regular”, which routine includes my morning coffee. I look forward to my lovely huge mug of coffee every morning. This morning, it’s gone. Extra large jar of Dow Egbert coffee is gone. Hard to miss a jar that size. My DD left last night for a weekend away with friends, renting a large self-catering house. Dare I suspect she’s the culprit? If so, AIBU to me REALLY angry with her? (FYI, looked in bin and recycling just in case accidentally broken - not there).

I would be upset that I had brought a child up to be so selfish and unthinking. Why could she not buy her own coffee? Even if she took some it would not be so bad but the whole lot? Little madam.

Nenic, why is it being a coffee snob to expect a drink called coffee to taste like coffee? Instant doesn't

BettyBitchface · 10/11/2018 14:11

There are clearly a lot of posters who don't have to use a coffee to help them "go". It is not a small thing to find something gone that you rely on for that. I used to use it but it stopped working. A chemist suggested lactulose which is much better.

BlueJava · 10/11/2018 14:11

Get yourself some decent coffee which needs a grinder and a proper coffee maker = problem solved.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 10/11/2018 14:14

I have friends who would be really annoyed in a similar situation. They all own mugs like this:

You coffee snobs are only embarrassing yourselves.

Nobody cares what brand you personally drink. It’s entirely irrelevant to the OP or the rest of the thread.

GrabEmByThePatriarchy · 10/11/2018 14:37

Reasonable to be annoyed, she could've so easily decanted some in a tub or mug for you. It's very thoughtless of her.

ShackUp · 10/11/2018 14:41

YABMASSIVELYU to drink Douwe Egberts.

Get thee an Aeropress and some actual coffee that doesn't taste like washing up water.

ShackUp · 10/11/2018 14:42

saucy 😅 just read your post. Unabashed coffee snob and proud!!

ShackUp · 10/11/2018 14:44

I do actually drink instant sometimes, but not when I fancy a coffee, just to have something other than tea 😁

AdoreTheBeach · 10/11/2018 14:46

Interestingly, my other daughter messaged back that she had some coffee yesterday, the large jar was in its usual place and lots of it. No reply from DD I suspect took it.

Of course, I’m no longer angry, annoyed yes though. Quite selfish of her though. Stopped this morning on way to work to buy more so at least I have some tomorrow. I’ll be eating some prunes tonight though.

Yes, I do like the idea of giving her a jar for Xmas. (as a family joke)

For me, I’d quite fancy a big mug that has some sort of quote on it about not coming between a mum (or similar) and her coffee.

Completely unreasonable to consider Dowe Egbert's coffee.

LittlePaintBox · 10/11/2018 15:16

YANBU, I'd be furious too. She's treating her mates to your coffee, while you go without!

IAmBeyonceAlways · 10/11/2018 15:47

I would be FUMING too - starts my day off badly if I dont have my usual routine. And if DD had just took anything of mine without asking I would be very put out, Just rude!

ItWentDownMyHeartHole · 10/11/2018 15:52

OP please promise that a jar of coffee is all she’s getting for Xmas. ‘‘Twas a dick move.

cherrytree63 · 10/11/2018 16:03

I'm on your side OP! I too have diverticular disease. My morning routine consists of a cup of tea first thing (Because I'm thirsty) followed by coffee about half a hour later (then a swift trot to the loo).
Anyone who doesn't suffer from it probably can't imagine the pain of an acute flare up of diverticulitis.

DuckbilledSplatterPuff · 10/11/2018 17:44

Keep an heir and a spare of coffee in the cupboard so you never run out. Then talk to the family about it.

LaBelleSauvage · 10/11/2018 18:28

I sat disown her. Go NC. Throw all her belongings into the street. Sleep with her boyfriend. Sow sardines into the lining of her favourite bra. Phone the police. And the home office. and maybe also seek an emergency detention order.

Or just buy some new coffee and when she comes back tell her to take a small tub next time.

And there you have the reason we have such a snowflake generation - such a wimpy reaction. Get tough!!! Wink Grin

perfectstorm · 11/11/2018 12:15

She's in her 20s and knows you have a painful medical condition, and a morning coffee is essential in managing that? And she took the whole large jar without asking, despite having opportunity to buy some herself on the drive?

I'd be really angry, too. She's bloody selfish and looking a gift horse (living at home) in the mouth. I assumed at first she was a teenager, so the thoughtlessness would be a developmentally normal thing, but her 20s? Working? Adult? When she knows you have medical problems meaning you need that coffee? It's not okay.

HellonHeels · 11/11/2018 12:21

That was very unkind and selfish of her. Is she often like this? Maybe it's time she moved out.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 11/11/2018 12:21

Was it a final straw type of rage? If she's usually a reasonable type then this seems a bit OTT.

My 17 year old DD asked if she could take some of my lovely new gin on a weekend away. I poured about a third of it into another bottle and left out tonic, limes, lemons. Discovered the next door she had helped herself to loads more!!!

beeefcake · 11/11/2018 12:21

Wait until she moves out and realised how expensive that stuff is to buy.

Now all I drink is Aldi gold roast I realise how privileged I was to grow up drinking Douwe Egberts

BigSandyBalls2015 · 11/11/2018 12:21

Next day!

Freezingheart · 11/11/2018 12:24

YADNBU

That would really really annoy me too. I love my morning coffee. She could have taken th jar but at least left you sufficient for your morning coffee until she returns with the jar!
