AIBU to not wear panty liners every day?

Tbh this is a complete new one for me. Was having a conversation with a friend yesterday who wears panty liners every day and has done since she was 15. I’d never heard of this before and told her so. She told me I was a manky minge Grin and that everybody wore them. Is this true? Thoughts please ....

Nope! Why would I? I wear clean nickers every day. This person is destroying the planet single handedly!

Jack65 · 07/11/2018 15:50

To the poster who said it is insulting to suggest women wear panty liners because of incontinence, why is it insulting? Normal women have incontinence you know, particularly after a difficult childbirth. I havent worn knickers for years and dont intend to, they're a bit of a waste of time and you just end up with a knicker line under clothes.

dorisdog · 07/11/2018 15:50

What? I have literally never heard of this! Surely these are for leaky, older ladies! (hopefully I've still got a decade before I need Tena Lady).

Hyperbole much?

QueenoftheNights · 07/11/2018 15:51

Jack65 so you must wash your trousers after each wearing?

What happens when you wear tight fitting clothes? How do you prevent wetness stains on skirts , dresses and crotches?

This brand appeared while I was browsing the other day.

Might be better than liners for some women ?

BertieBotts · 07/11/2018 15:52

I get loads of discharge so if I don't wear them I get disgusting snotty pants touching me all day. Sometimes it soaks through to trousers which is grim. I probably will get washable ones at some point but I'd have to research them and find some probably online and then fork out for them. It's easier to spend a euro or two every few weeks and throw some in the supermarket trolley.

Useful when TTC - infuriating most of the time. I would love to not need liners. On the plus side I have really light periods and sometimes use liners for that too.

TBH if it were not for these threads on MN I would have assumed everyone WAS like me - I had no idea excess moisture was the exception rather than the norm, because I don't usually discuss my level of vaginal mucous over coffee with my friends Confused

RatRolyPoly · 07/11/2018 15:54

Are there washable/reusable pads for discharge? I'm not a panty liner wearer as discharge seems to have gone in the opposite direction to others since kids, I'm just curious.

UpstartCrow · 07/11/2018 15:54

£30 a pair for special knickers is not a suitable replacement for panty liners for most women.

SirVixofVixHall · 07/11/2018 15:55

I have washable pads but haven’t tried washable liners, I am trying to reduce plastic use so use organic liners anyway, but washables might be good. I probably use liners on one or two days a month.

ProfessorMoody · 07/11/2018 15:56

You can pick a set of 6 washable liners up on ebay for £6.

Changingagain · 07/11/2018 15:56

Why are people still asking why? Read the answers given already.
I have quite light periods, it doesn't mean I don't believe women who say they have heavy ones. Why are so many posters insistent that because they don't have much discharge, there must be something wrong with those of us that do?

Aeroflotgirl · 07/11/2018 15:56

What damage to the environment, imagine landfill if every women did that. Why don't men have to wear panty liners, why are women's odour or secretions offensive?

Sammysees · 07/11/2018 15:57

That was the whole point of the thread @bertiebotts.
It’s not the sort of conversation you have over dinner is it? I was curious as I’d not heard of it before and it seems I’m not the only one.

They're not very sexy though, are they? What happens if you might be heading for some "action"? Do you remove them before they're seen?

Changingagain · 07/11/2018 15:59

Yes there are washable liners, I use them.

BitchQueen90 · 07/11/2018 15:59

I've been on the mini pill for years and I don't get periods or any excessive discharge. So I don't personally ever wear them.

Cambalamb · 07/11/2018 16:00

If you have severe discharge, I can see you would feel fresher being able to change a liner but if not them unless they are washable I think your friend is BU.
I find a liner irritating when I use them at the end of a period and if anything they make me feel drier as they soak too much up!!!

BertrandRussell · 07/11/2018 16:00

God, marketing people get us where they want us. Anything that suggests women are dirty, smelly, leaky, moist......
No wonder the environment is fucked.

Lucinder · 07/11/2018 16:01

Agree only use when needed - like if wearing pants all day into evening out - usefull for staying fresh as just quickly change. Also for spotting and tampon insurance for special underwear/clothing. I feel bad for using them as much as I do - want to change to a cup but not sure how many periods I have left - am 38 - mum had menopause arount 43 maybe... Hmm

Changingagain · 07/11/2018 16:02

SherlockHolmes I'm more concerned with my personal comfort than what is considered to be sexy.
DH has seen my liners many times, he's even washed them. He's never seemed bothered, we've also never needed lube, which I imagine isn't very "sexy" to use.

Jack65 · 07/11/2018 16:02

Queen of course I dont wash stuff after one use. I don't have any discharge and they smell fine. Live in denim cutoffs all summer and its 30 degrees here May to September, i do wash them every week though. If i'm wearing a dress i put shorts on unless its a maxi, in which case i dont bother with anything. I think people do what makes them feel ok for the weather and stuff and there's a bit of a judgie thread going on here.

Lizzie48 · 07/11/2018 16:04

No, definitely not. I just change my knickers, I have plenty of clean pairs so it's not exactly a problem. It's not something I'd ever discuss with a friend, though.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 07/11/2018 16:04

A lot of older women wear them because of age-related leakiness, but I wouldn't think it's normal for younger ones.
However I'm not exactly a spring chicken - more what they used to call an old boiling fowl - and I don't.
