AIBU to not wear panty liners every day?

Tbh this is a complete new one for me. Was having a conversation with a friend yesterday who wears panty liners every day and has done since she was 15. I’d never heard of this before and told her so. She told me I was a manky minge Grin and that everybody wore them. Is this true? Thoughts please ....

I do remember one particularly "gushing" occurrence years ago, but at the time I supposed it had something to do with having taken a bath. I wondered if this was actually possible or if I'd completely made it up, but a quick Google reveals it is indeed possible for us women to leak retained bath water!

Possibly off topic, but I thought it was interesting so thought I'd throw it into the mix.

Juanbablo · 07/11/2018 16:11

I didn't know people did wear panty liners every day!

Fresta · 07/11/2018 16:12

You don't need them- knickers have a cotton gusset to absorb slight discharge and they let your bits breathe better. Panyliners are a money-making thing invented to make women feel dirty. They are a waste of resources, damage the environment, are made from plastic and synthetic and make your bits more sweaty and unable to breathe. they are only useful for the first and last days of a period.

YellowOcelot · 07/11/2018 16:14

Washing my trousers every day would be bad for the environment too.

MrsBobtonTrent · 07/11/2018 16:14

Since DC2 I have needed to wear panty liners every day. Otherwise I would have to change my knickers 3-4 times a day - changing a liner is simpler. I get very moist and don’t want damp patches on my trousers thanks very much. I suppose earlier in life I would have been similarly astonished at someone using them daily. But it’s a need for me now. I do mostly use washable ones now which keeps the cost down.

Igneococcus · 07/11/2018 16:14

Hmm I wonder if there’d be a market for bamboo knickers (they absorb and hold more liquid than cotton) and maybe with an extra layer of bamboo fabric in the gusset?

There is a company that sells bamboo knickers and other bamboo clothing. I have never bought anything from them but they keep sending me free socks (they are nice).

ProfessorMoody · 07/11/2018 16:15

You don't need them

Ah, there we go! @Fresta has spoken! My hormonal condition is miraculously cured and I'll no longer leak fluid onto my clothes and surfaces I sit on because I don't need to use them!

This will be life changing. Thank you.

EdisonLightBulb · 07/11/2018 16:16

I only wear them if I'm right at the end of my period and it doesn't warrant using a tampon

Same here, everyday use is madness, bad for the environment and isn't that what a gusset is for?

Anyway, I find panty liners like pads can get stuck wrong sometimes or squash up and I have a fear of wearing a skirt and it came loose and dropped out.

Bluelady · 07/11/2018 16:19

Another resounding success for the marketing industry. They didn't exist until a couple of decades ago and women were just fine without them.

Seafoodeatit · 07/11/2018 16:19

Some women do have a lot discharge, especially around their fertile period, it would be better for the environment if they used cloth pads but it's up to them what they use.

didyouseetheflaresinthesky · 07/11/2018 16:19

Why on earth would I? I don't leak. Do some people have leaky vaginas?

CheeseAndOnionIceCream · 07/11/2018 16:22

I don't use them. I've gone through the menopause but still keep a packet of sanitary towels handy at home in case I get a cold, because if I sneeze or cough too violently,I wet myself! Blush. No panty liner would be sufficient for that! I do know someone who uses panty liners EVERY DAY. She thinks any women who doesn't is 'disgusting',and finds the idea that your knickers might actually smell like they've been worn, absolutely rank!

Andylion · 07/11/2018 16:22

God, marketing people get us where they want us. Anything that suggests women are dirty, smelly, leaky, moist......

I'm not dirty or smelly but I am leaky and moist. I don't need a marketing campaign to tell me this.

Before I knew about liners, when I was a teen, I would use toilet paper in my underwear. I didn't need a full pad, but I needed something.

I should have put this all in the past tense as I haven't needed them since my period stopped.

I have much sympathy for women in the UK because it seems that it is nearly impossible for you buy unscented ones. Fortunately, we don't have that problem in Canada.

BlessedBeTheFruitCake · 07/11/2018 16:23

I only wear them at the tail end of a period when a pad or tampon is too much and when I'm expecting my period to arrive. I do have a friend who uses them all the time though.

Tinty · 07/11/2018 16:24

But why? Is this a heavy vaginal discharge issue or a leaking pee issue? I have seriously never heard of this in my life, safe for when you’re on your period or are older and perhaps a bit incontinent.

Well unsurprisingly all of us are different.

Some people sweat through their clothes, some people barely sweat. Some people have to wash their hair every day or it is really greasy, some people only need to wash hair every few days.

Some people have light to no discharge, some people have so much it is easier to change a liner twice a day than keep changing pants.

I think those with little discharge have learnt something from this thread.

Fairylea · 07/11/2018 16:24

Would never occur to me to wear one everyday!

I only use them just before a period or just after.

Megan2018 · 07/11/2018 16:25

@didyouseetheflaresinthesky

yes I have a leaky vagina!
1 week dry-ish, 2 weeks very wet, 1 week period. Every sodding month!
2-3 pairs of knickers needed daily without liners.

SpitefulMidLifeAnimal · 07/11/2018 16:25

I'd just like to add that if you suddenly find you have a lot of discharge, do talk to the GP about it. It started quite suddenly for me, I put it down to peri and bought some panty liners for daily use. Turns out I had PID all along and didn't find out until I was admitted to hospital with salpingitis. I'm now sans tubes so please do get it checked out.

didyou please cut out the vag shaming, thanks.

ShadowHuntress · 07/11/2018 16:26

I’ve only started since having my dc as I sometimes leak a tiny bit when I cough or laugh! Wouldn’t otherwise as I don’t think they’re that great for down below and they’re bad for the environment

ProfessorMoody · 07/11/2018 16:28

Do some people have leaky vaginas

Yes, as people have already explained throughout this thread.

HTH.

LittleKitty1985 · 07/11/2018 16:28

I use them when I'm wearing tight trousers because I find the extra layer helps reduce the appearance of camel toe Blush

catsmother · 07/11/2018 16:29

These threads always incite such a lot of judgement and body shaming .... where's the bloody sisterhood when you need it huh?! It astonishes me how intelligent women can possess so little empathy and/or imagination with regard to why some women prefer and/or need to use liners above and beyond giving in to persuasive marketing or fears they might 'smell'. @ProfessorMoody has spelled out the reasons why women use liners very well indeed, particularly the need to protect outer clothing like skirts, dresses and trousers from copious (but healthy!) discharge which a normal pair of pants couldn't absorb ... it is, however, a real shame she has had to do this. Apart from the minority of women who apparently can't think for themselves, does anyone think the remaining liner users would choose to buy the things unless they had genuine cause to do so? It's so disheartening to see (some) women attacking others simply because their bodies work differently Sad

Galvantula · 07/11/2018 16:33

Can anyone recommend comfy, lightweight washables?

I got some cheeky wipes ones and can't get on with them. They don't seem to sit right for me and get wedged uncomfortably. They're also bulkier than I expected.

I'm another that feels uncomfortably damp if I don't wear them, I didn't for years but it maybe it's different since having DC.

I'd much rather use washable liners though. I'm still too much of a wimp to use them for actual periods, but replacing the daily liners would be a start!

pickingdaisies · 07/11/2018 16:39

Never seen the word "moist" so many times in one thread. Somebody better give Miranda a shout!

youarenotkiddingme · 07/11/2018 16:39

I don't but I tend to wear at least 2 pairs of pants a day. Sometimes 3!

As someone up thread said you just wash them!

But I do think if someone wears them daily they probably need them - or else why would you?
