AIBU to not wear panty liners every day?

Sammysees · 07/11/2018 14:21

Tbh this is a complete new one for me. Was having a conversation with a friend yesterday who wears panty liners every day and has done since she was 15. I’d never heard of this before and told her so. She told me I was a manky minge Grin and that everybody wore them. Is this true? Thoughts please ....

But I am confused by the sex comment up there... Confused

SirVixofVixHall · 07/11/2018 15:35

Landfill, plastic and chemicals next to your vulva day in day out. I mean WHY ?
Like other posters I only use them on days when I’m still bleeding very lightly at the end of a period.
Surely this is what pants are for ? If you want “freshness” why wouldn’t you just put on fresh pants ?

Inertia · 07/11/2018 15:36

You're not obliged to!

For some women they provide peace of mind when periods become totally unpredictable, or bladder control is less than perfect, or when discharge becomes uncomfortable. People who wear them do shower and change their knickers every day as well- it's not either /or!

And it's probably not ideal in terms of landfill, though I would hope that everyone proclaiming how terrible pantyliners are has never used disposable nappies for their babies, or used disposable sanpro for themselves, and recycles all waste and packaging without fail, and only ever buys second-hand clothes and toys, and never sends any waste from household renovations to the tip, and never replaces computers/ phones etc, and never buys anything made in countries where manufacturing has a negative environmental impact. Lots of things are bad for the environment, it's not fair to berate people for one issue unless you have zero negative impact environmental impact yourself.

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 07/11/2018 15:36

stopgap some women genuinely produce more discharge than others, for some it can be occasional and for some it can be daily.

PatchworkGirl · 07/11/2018 15:36

What a horrendous waste -so bad for the environment. Tbh I'm not sure that it would be great for your bits either - shouldn't they be allowed some fresh air from time to time?!

Plessis · 07/11/2018 15:37

I've never bought them or worn them. I'm 53.

SirVixofVixHall · 07/11/2018 15:38

Omzlas there are really good knickers for that now. They are like period pants , but you can also get them for cough/sneeze/trampoline leak situations.
I haven’t tried them, but i have seen them when browsing for period pants.

TheOrigRightsofwomen · 07/11/2018 15:39

In answer to your question.

No. And your friend is rude.

End of period or as back up I might, but for regular days I just change my pants. That's what knickers are for, no?

Inertia · 07/11/2018 15:39

Some of us work in jobs where we can't just abandon our work to go and change pants several times a day! Some people don't get a break to go to the loo for 4 hours at a time, let alone strip down several times a day to change pants.

Celebelly · 07/11/2018 15:40

Does anyone use the Thinx period pants? I've been wondering if they're any good - I have a lot of discharge at the moment due to pregnancy but I don't get on with panty-liners so wondered if they might be a good bet.

newmumwithquestions · 07/11/2018 15:40

Hmm I wonder if there’d be a market for bamboo knickers (they absorb and hold more liquid than cotton) and maybe with an extra layer of bamboo fabric in the gusset?

I’d buy them for period days. I’m scared of leaking but rarely do and if I do it’s only a little bit (usually!). Get designing!

On non period days i’m a pant free supporter, in summer I can go all week without wearing any!

ProfessorMoody · 07/11/2018 15:41

Or, you could read the thread then stop asking why.

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 07/11/2018 15:41

SirVix I’m all for saving against unnecessary landfill but popping on a fresh pair of knickers isn’t always convenient if you’re at work/commuting/etc. Fortunately I’ve only ever had few occasions like that and knickers to the point where they’re drenched and you’re very aware of your smell is really uncomfortable and self conscious - I think it’s a basic right that women feel comfortable.

goodnessgrace · 07/11/2018 15:42

My DSD does. And often forgets to take them off her knickers before she puts them in the laundry basket.

PatchworkGirl · 07/11/2018 15:43

If it is for excess moisture then I suppose washable liners would be a good solution. But if she had extra needs down there I'm assuming she wouldn't have called you a 'manky minge' and assumed that everyone else does too - it seems she's just gone over the top. Perhaps due to the usual marketing message that women are unclean and need to spend money on making ourselves nicer.

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 07/11/2018 15:43

newmumwithquestions I think I’m going to have to dig out my pencils! Grin

Sammysees · 07/11/2018 15:43

I’m actually quite shocked at the depth of feeling from both sides here. It was something I’d never come across before and I was curious. Yes we are all different and my comments have been light hearted and not meant to offend. I will take my manky minge and report back to my friend accordingly Grin

Must admit I've never heard of wearing liners every day, but some of the explanations given here make sense. Each to their own, I guess.

I need the help of HRT to prevent dryness and I think liners would just absorb what there is too easily. I think being too dry can lead to imbalances and thrush so I'd never use them myself.

Kemer2018 · 07/11/2018 15:45

I never have, but a mate always has.
"Ooh we mustn't inflict our vag smells on poor menfolk. Now, be a good little consumer droid and line the pockets of the sanpro companies whilst lining your pants"

anniehm · 07/11/2018 15:46

No, I wash them each day, why put plastic and goodness knows what chemicals in the bin each day. Only exception is last day of period which is really light for me

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 07/11/2018 15:46

Patchworkgirl yes I know what you mean, I do wonder how many women/girls are persuaded into buying liners when they don’t need them.

ProfessorMoody · 07/11/2018 15:48

It has fuck all to do with menfolk and everything to do with my personal comfort.

Alfie190 · 07/11/2018 15:48

@Lovemusic

I don't think anyone has implied anyone is dirty or gross

Really? I have seen dozens of comments in which some posters have explained they don't use panty liners because they shower and change their knickers every day. Which seems to be implying that panty liner users do not. That would be pretty dirty and gross would it not?

QueenoftheNights · 07/11/2018 15:49

why do you need ask random strangers on a forum?

Do what you want to. I've not read the whole thread- life's too short.
