AIBU to not wear panty liners every day?

Tbh this is a complete new one for me. Was having a conversation with a friend yesterday who wears panty liners every day and has done since she was 15. I’d never heard of this before and told her so. She told me I was a manky minge Grin and that everybody wore them. Is this true? Thoughts please ....

findingsotty have you read the thread, and reasons people need to wear them? Please give us your wisdom on what we should be doing then? Do you use sanintary products? How is it any different, if I have a physical need to wear them, why shouldn’t I? How ignorant.

catsmother · 07/11/2018 19:26

Like @SingaoreSlinky, I'm also happy to divulge my personal experience in the hope it might make other, similarly affected, women feel better about themselves.
I'm 53 and have had heavy discharge for 40 bloody years! I've mentioned it to my GP, to the nurse when having smears (because I was nervous about it being there) and at various points over the years at sexual health clinics too. There's nothing intrinsically wrong with me, no infection, no itch, no smell ... it's just the way my particular body is. Nonetheless, I spent many many years feeling mortified about it and no, despite being open minded generally I've never felt confident enough to discuss it with other women in real life. I had the sense it was a shameful distasteful thing for a long time.
So ... I wear liners. Because they protect my clothes which would otherwise be stained and absorb the discharge which would seep through my knickers. I can't be washing jeans on a daily basis and nor do I want the embarrassment of wet patches on the back of my skirt. I am extremely mindful of my impact on the environment generally but have no choice but to deal with my body in the best way I can.
I would NOT dream of criticising women who don't want or need to use them, nor call them any variation of 'manky' for not doing so. In fact, I'm very envious of their lighter or non existent discharge. We are all different, that's all.
I do make every effort to talk about this with my teen daughter, who of course is free to manage her bodily fluids as she sees fit. I just never wanted her to worry or feel ashamed about it as I did for so long, and to know she can ask for advice if she wants.

Sammysees · 07/11/2018 19:29

@namechange1781 ... of course she changes her underwear every day! 🙄

I have to wear panty liners everyday. I have lots of discharge and always have done. It doesn't smell at all and is usually a milky liquid. I have been tested a few times for stds always been clear but if I don't wear them I get very damp knickers which feel gross.

SushiMonster · 07/11/2018 19:35

People do this?

I just wash my pants and put new ones on every day!

I do sometimes use a pantyliner if I am traveling long haul, feels nice to change/remove it and have a toothbrush if traveling for a long time.

ILoveHumanity · 07/11/2018 19:37

I don’t but sometimes I do think I should adopt it. However I wouldn’t use a panty liner , I would just use a good old thin wash cloth and change sides every time.

I also wash with water in the toilet and dry up.

Im a bit of a under-30-granny

wLuytgNx · 07/11/2018 19:40

I wear them EVERY single day - I still change my knickers daily.

Everyone is different, I get a lot of discharge and I dislike the feeling of wet knickers and sometimes if its very wet it goes through to my trousers, it's a really uncomfortable feeling and you feel like everyone knows you are wet... so panty liners are a perfect solution for me.

SPOILER ALERT - Panty liners are also amazing for stopping camel toe if you have tight leggings/jeans ;-)

BlueJava · 07/11/2018 19:40

No I don't wear them - bad for environment, too expensive, not needed.

ThePinkOcelot · 07/11/2018 19:40

I wore them for quite a while. Dd2 used to call them mams knicker stickers! I don’t wear them any more.
I ran out for a couple of days so didn’t use them. I’d always thought they were for hygiene and I had a smell. However when I ran out and didn’t wear them, I didn’t have that smell. Never worn them since.

bmbonanza · 07/11/2018 19:40

I wear them all day - just prefer to be able to change the liner a few times through the day and feel fresh, but its just personal choice, nothing wrong either way

BertrandRussell · 07/11/2018 19:44

Of course some women need them. It's the expectation that we all do that promotes anxiety and is damaging to the environment!

ohreallyohreallyoh · 07/11/2018 19:46

genuine question here- why ‘need’? What are other women experiencing that I have no concept of? Excess discharge? Constant spotting?

My bladder is not what it was. I have minor leakage. It smells if I don’t wear a liner. I am a teacher. You don’t want to be a teacher who smells of piss. Really not rocket science.

C0untDucku1a · 07/11/2018 19:46

I Am exactly the same as adviceonthepox and rarely dont wear one. Within an hour or so i would have to change my knickers. Any longer and id probably have to Change my pants. Some women have much more discharge than others. It is worst at ovulation.

If some of the ‘god no! how ridiculous’ commenters could actually read the posts explaining why, rather than saying ridiculously stupid things like ‘i just change my knickers every day’ there'd probably be a lot less eye rolling needed.

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 07/11/2018 19:48

Never wore them until DC2 ((massive))
Now I have incintinence issue

Ah well !

She must have a lot of mucus and discharge Grin

littlemisscomper · 07/11/2018 19:49

I wonder if everyone of the women shrieking about the impact on the environment have done elimination communication with their babies instead of using those beastly, unnecessary nappies? Grin

Honestly the responses on this thread are so weird! Why is it so hard for the dry mumsnetters to get their heads round the fact that some women produce more discharge than they do? Some women are taller than others, some have big boobs, some small, some have blonde hair and green eyes and some black hair and brown eyes, some have relatively dry vaginas and some produce enough discharge that they feel fresher or more comfortable adding an absorbent layer to their knickers... Pretty straight forward and not really a cause for the panic seen here!

AnonyMousee · 07/11/2018 19:50

Yanbu. We wear knickers and wash them after wearing them for a day. Yes they can smell but that's natural? Surely by her logic we should wear liners on our armpits because they can create smells by the end of the day too!

She probably has above average amount of discharge than most, and doesn't realise.

user1490465531 · 07/11/2018 19:52

Whenever a post comes up wanting women to share their most intimate bodily functions I can't help thinking it's a man posting.
Ladies ever heard of over share? There could be a man behind this post wanking off for all we know.

ProfessorMoody · 07/11/2018 19:53

not needed

Read 👏 the 👏 thread 👏

TheWiseWomansFear · 07/11/2018 19:53

What?
Do you mean sanitary pads or Tena ladies? If I'm not on my period and not incontinent of course I don't wear them every day - I've never heard of anyone who does...

Imagine going to dtd and you've got a pad on..

TheWiseWomansFear · 07/11/2018 19:54

Also, think of the landfill...

Blackness78 · 07/11/2018 19:56

We are all different 'down there', what's the Biggie? Confused

AnonyMousee · 07/11/2018 19:58

@TheWiseWomansFear haha this! I'm currently pregnant and so some days I'm wearing a liner due to excess discharge and when OH puts his hand down there to 'try get me in the mood', it sends shivers up my spine!! He says he doesn't care but I'm sure I would if I were him! Grin

TheSultanofPingu · 07/11/2018 20:01

My god I've just read the whole of this thread. It's unbelievable. Posters are still asking why some women choose to wear panty liners daily!
It has been explained to them over and over again why this may be the case and still they're asking Why!
And I'm sure the vast majority of us panty liner wearers change our pants and shower daily.
Some hard of thinking people on this thread.

Cambalamb · 07/11/2018 20:02

Why isn't there a male equivalent to catch their willy wee when they put it back in their pants? It's because they wouldn't buy it because they are not brought up with the notion that they have to be sweet and fragrant at all times!

Devillanelle · 07/11/2018 20:05

I'm imagining landfill areas piled high with used panty liners now 😬
