To think not having a way to play music in your house is weird?

Had a playdate with someone recently, got talking about how my ds loves to dance to the moana soundtrack and my friend said "ah that's nice, we don't have any way to play music except through the telly or on my phone"

Surely this is all kinds of wrong. Everyone should have some kind of sound system surely?

It's not cos they can't afford one btw they're just not bothered.

Not everyone feels the need to soundtrack their life.

I like music as a live, interactive, social experience. So going to a gig, or out dancing (band or DJ). But not just as background.

When I was younger, in my hometown loads of people aged 12-16 used to listen to the local radio station evening show, send requests and messages to one another, do phone-ins. And people spoke about it the next day.

These days don’t mind listening to Bryan Burnett if I’m in the car or cooking, and DH and I chat about the song selections. Sometimes I look specific things up on YouTube and watch/listen to them. But I’m not really one for background music.

ghostbox · 07/11/2018 05:56

Well this has been eye opening for me, I'm really surprised by how many people don't really care about music! I just thought it was a universal thing to like hearing your favourite song at a good volume. It can completely change my mood to have a dance to a good song.

I do care about music. I just don’t like to cheapen it by making it ubiquitous.

ghostbox · 07/11/2018 06:07

Listening to music all the time cheapens it now?! God I've heard it all.

We have a sound bar on the tv which we Bluetooth our phones to. We Bluetooth in the car too. And I Bluetooth to headphones when running. Kids have a Bluetooth speaker too. (Is it worth mentioning here my ex boyfriends job involved testing and developing Bluetooth systems circa 2002/3....I took the piss a lot....it'll never catch on...)

We have about 50 bazillion tunes on iTunes and listen to planet rock or radio 2 in the mornings.

I always have music in the car.

I put radio on the tv when cleaning etc

My dh would have music alllll the time but sometimes I need silence. My head is too busy! Also his chill out tunes are LOUD and thrashy which I'm more than happy with but not for chilling out!

(And if there's no music he's plinking on his guitar, looking at new music videos on his phone and generally being loud and annoying )

So no sound system here but definitely lots of sound!!

Ginazon · 07/11/2018 06:09

‘cheapen it’? Eh?!

Ginazon · 07/11/2018 06:12

I remember babysitting as a teenager for a family who had an incredibly fancy sound system. But their music collection consisted of five cds, 3 of which were Jive Bunny compilations. Now that was weird.

Storm4star · 07/11/2018 06:24

I’d say I actively dislike music. Especially early in the morning. I stayed at someone’s house recently and the radio went on as soon as they woke up and I had a splitting headache by the time I left. I work from home and my house is silent, it’s bliss! I do find it irritating if I go to a friends for dinner and there’s music on the background. We’re talking, I don’t see why music is needed. All summer long i’ve had to put up with neighbours blasting music then shouting to make themselves heard over the top of it. Bloody annoying!

NancyJoan · 07/11/2018 06:31

My DH is like you OP, really passionate about music, so we have various ways to listen to and play music. None of which I use. Radio 4 goes on first thing and I listen to it nearly all day. Then he comes home and plays music.

However, I’m a big reader and find it very odd if I go to a house with no books. Different folks, different strokes.

FluffyMcCloud · 07/11/2018 06:37

Haha this reminds me of being a teenager when listening to MUSIC made you SO COOL and people would compete about how importantly it was and how MUSIC was their LIFE. And when I was 14 a boy came into my room and I only had a clock radio with cassette deck and he took the piss saying music obviously wasn’t IMPORTANT to me and how could I ever understand how music CHANGED HIS LIFE.
I still know people desperately trying to be young and cool and harp on about music.
I’m in my 40s now and definitely don’t care about what others think makes them cool and me not.

Greatest Showman soundtrack on a phone in a mug to amplify sound anyone?

LovingLiving · 07/11/2018 06:41

It’s a sign of the times I think. People just play music differently eg with headphones on their mobiles which is how my dc listen to music.

People used to have lots of cds and a CD player including the older generation eg my parents would put a cd on in the kitchen but they would never download music or put it on through the tv.

I have a docking station with speakers for my iPhone and I have 100s of songs from iTunes which I play full blast but I don’t know anyone else who listens to music in that way.

teaandtoast · 07/11/2018 06:42

Silence is bliss.

Notjustanyone · 07/11/2018 06:54

We have Alexa in every room. The speakers on that is plenty loud enough and good quality too unlike the smaller units. We use amazon music & Spotify through them & in our cars so no need for a sound system.

SoyDora · 07/11/2018 07:06

We have a few Bose speakers dotted around the house that seem to be mainly used to play whatever the DC (4 and 3) want to listen to! DH has his music on loud when he’s cooking too. To be honest if I ever get the house to myself (SAHM and DH works from home) I revel in the silence.
I don’t watch TV either though and some people think that’s weird.

bumblingbovine49 · 07/11/2018 07:13

I loathe noise in the morning including music. I can't have music on if working or concentrating as it is distracting . I generally just don't listen to much music except occasionally in the car .I don't even have Spotify or the equivalent in my phone

TheClitterati · 07/11/2018 07:22

I have 2 stereo systems and about a thousand cds. I very rarely play them.

I usually play music on Spotify using my phone and speaker.

I am having a dilemma re dd. I'd like her to be able to play music in her bedroom but she is too young for a phone. What to do?

Cheeeeislifenow · 07/11/2018 07:22

I don't understand how anyone can dislike music... Music is very important to me, all of my most important memories have a sound track to them.

ElainaElephant · 07/11/2018 07:28

I listen to music all the time, but it's through my TV. I have Spotify, YouTube, radio apps and amazon music on there, but sure why I should buy anything else when I have more music than I could possibly listen to right there.

I do also have a rarely used cd player in the kitchen, that was gifted to me when I moved here. But I can access an the music I have on cd and much more using the TV (and the living room and kitchen are adjoining so I just increase the volume as needed)

JamAtkins · 07/11/2018 07:44

I can’t remember ever purposefully playing music in the house, although I will have it in the car if there is nothing on the radio or I can’t be arsed with whatever audiobook I’m listening too. I wasn’t brought up with music, I can’t remember my parents ever playing it and I think that’s probably why I don’t ‘get’ it now. I don’t dislike it but it’s alien to me. I do feel a bit jealous of people who go to gigs/festivals etc because they seem to really enjoy it. Someone said how annoying it is when people say they like everything and won’t commit to a genre but my knowledge really is that shit. I know famous people, but not necessarily their songs, and famous songs but not necessarily who sang them and I find genres confusing. Obviously I know what classical is (there’s probably sub types?). And opera and country and western but if someone told me they liked house or grime or garage I don’t know what those things are. I’m a bit shaky as to what constitutes ‘pop’ tbh. I could never think ‘I’ll put this on as background while we eat’ because I wouldn’t know where to start.

Justabadwife · 07/11/2018 07:45

We have music on quite a bit.
Either through my phone, the tv sound bar, or one of the Bluetooth speakers mainly DHs cos it's amazing. No fancy sound system here.
We all have Spotify on our phones. I put all the cds (and dvds in a bag in the spare room).

jacksonmaine · 07/11/2018 07:48

Grin @ Ginazon.

JustJoinedRightNow · 07/11/2018 07:49

Sorry OP, I’m another who thinks silence is golden.

And as for music on during a dinner party or having guests over, no way. I need to be able to properly hear what people are saying otherwise I don’t enjoy myself.

With two young children there’s more than enough background noise going on without adding music into the mix.

Growingboys · 07/11/2018 07:50

We don't really. Our lives are so busy that I like peace when I get home.

We do have a Bluetooth speaker that we use for parties but apart from that, that's it.

I think it's weird to have music on all day long and don't understand people who hate silence!

Kickassbitch · 07/11/2018 07:50

I like music but listen to it through headphones when I fancy listening to it, other than that Silence is golden. I don't even like the TV on unless I'm watching something specific. I don't like noise of any description really unless I'm in the mood, I sometimes wish I could switch my ears off sometimes!!!

SaucyJack · 07/11/2018 07:55

Haha! Yeah, I’m with you FluffyMcCloud.

We have two CDs in the car..... One is the Greatest Showman, and the other is a Disney compilation.

I did like music when I was younger, but I now have far too many children to a) have the time or energy to listen to music and b) even if I did, I’m not “allowed” to have my own choice on anyway.
