To think not having a way to play music in your house is weird?

Had a playdate with someone recently, got talking about how my ds loves to dance to the moana soundtrack and my friend said "ah that's nice, we don't have any way to play music except through the telly or on my phone"

Surely this is all kinds of wrong. Everyone should have some kind of sound system surely?

It's not cos they can't afford one btw they're just not bothered.

Music is v important in our house. Yanbu. Couldn't imagine not being able to blast out a tune if need be.

dontalltalkatonce · 06/11/2018 21:55

Digital radio in the kitchen. That's it. Otherwise just use the telly or phones.

IStandWithPosie · 06/11/2018 21:55

I listen to music all the time. On my phone, TV or car radio. I really can’t see his that’s weird or means I’m not bothered about music. Or why that would freak anyone out. Are you a bit of a music snob?

nuttyknitter · 06/11/2018 21:55

I listen to radio 4 in the house and podcasts in the car. It wouldn't cross my mind to listen to music.

HauntedPencil · 06/11/2018 21:56

Using your phone would be fine with a speaker. I didn't have anything for ages and it really annoyed me so I finally got a got speaker I can play music on to from my computer tablet etc. All my CDS are in a box in the shed.

Blackriver · 06/11/2018 21:56

I listen to music lots, but only through my computer or phone, dont have a sound system or speakers.

Donthugmeimscared · 06/11/2018 21:56

As for people coming round. Apart from someone popping round for a cuppa I'm pretty antisocial.

NonaGrey · 06/11/2018 21:56

We have Sonos speakers throughout the house, but only because DH wanted them.

I rarely put music on when I’m alone in the house. I do listen to music or radio in the car.

RomanyRoots · 06/11/2018 21:56

This is so interesting OP.
It's change in technology, look at tv too.
I know lots of people who don't own a cd, let alone vinyl.
I agree, they will never know what it was like, just as I never knew what the war was like.
Lots of people don't own a tv, they prefer tablets.

I don't think I am. But music played directly from a phone does sound a bit shit, and the same from a telly. It doesn't travel so you can't get the volume either.

A few years ago we sold all our cds as we didn’t play them anymore. We don’t have a stand alone cd or music player (although actually I do have a record player but don’t use it ever).

My tv has good speakers for Spotify and we all have good earphones for our own music. 4 people all wanting their own styles of music on would be too much!

RaininSummer · 06/11/2018 21:57

Seems odd to me too. I have gone all retro and bought a little machine that will play cds and mp3s on a USB stick. I don't understand the paid for Spotify at all.

SaucyJack · 06/11/2018 21:57

We have lots of ways to play music here. I don’t use them.

Any chance to enjoy absolute silence is blessed relief.

xyzandabc · 06/11/2018 21:57

One of my kids has a cd player that she does use a lot. Apart from that we don't really play music in the house. We listen to various radio stations on a radio in the kitchen, that's it.

We do actually have the means to play music (Bluetooth speakers, smart tvs, phones, MP3 players etc) we just don't use them for listening to music.

Hedgehogblues · 06/11/2018 21:58

I listen to music all the time, I just do it through the TV or my phone

SpitefulMidLifeAnimal · 06/11/2018 21:58

More music than tv at my house, I couldn't imagine never playing music and can't understand people who don't have a favourite band/singer either.

MirandaWest · 06/11/2018 21:58

We have multiple Sonoses (Soni?) I couldn’t imagine not having a way to play music either but not everyone is the same.

Munchkingoat · 06/11/2018 22:00

I've said many times that i could absolutely live without music. I could never live without books though

Bodicea · 06/11/2018 22:00

Are you a music bore/snob? I like silence too. Regularly drive with nothing on and just my thoughts.
My kids comandeer the tv so not much chance to play music ( dh does have b&o speaker though).
Also like a bit of pop too and musical soundtracks.
I am a grown up now so stopped caring what the music bores thought a long time ago.

TulipsInBloom1 · 06/11/2018 22:00

I shove the radio on when Im doing housework. I have cds in the car. I listen to podcasts on my phone.

Hedgehogblues · 06/11/2018 22:01

Headphones exist

Notreallyhere23 · 06/11/2018 22:01

Yes spiteful I do get a bit pissed off with people who are just vague and ‘oh I like all types of music really’- I bet you bloody don’t.

lostpigeon · 06/11/2018 22:02

listen to the 80s, 90s and clubland on sky tv, or tune in radio on my phone (with earphones) no proper music system needed whatsoever. Happy with whatever comes on the radio/tv mostly

SushiMonster · 06/11/2018 22:03

I have some good Bluetooth speakers which are used only for parties.

I don’t actually listen to music much at home, more when walking or running.

IStandWithPosie · 06/11/2018 22:03

But music played directly from a phone does sound a bit shit

That’s personal taste though isn’t it? It’s perfect for me. I stick my phone in my back pocket and go about my cleaning or whatever. In fact if I perch it on the top of the banister upstairs I can hear it all round the house.
