To think not having a way to play music in your house is weird?

Had a playdate with someone recently, got talking about how my ds loves to dance to the moana soundtrack and my friend said "ah that's nice, we don't have any way to play music except through the telly or on my phone"

Surely this is all kinds of wrong. Everyone should have some kind of sound system surely?

It's not cos they can't afford one btw they're just not bothered.

Digital radio in the kitchen for R6 when cooking. Silence in other rooms. Only
bother with TV once or twice a week for an hour or so. Don't know how you would get music on it. Children have music on their phones but I don't as don't know how/am not bothered enough to find out. I don't hear what they listen to as they use headphones. All very different to when I was young. I used to quite enjoy tne ritual of putting an LP (and later a CD) on but haven't used either for years.

VickieCherry · 06/11/2018 22:46

I love music, go to gigs, it was a huge part of my life when I was youn and is still important. My partner is in a band, he plays music most days. But I like silence at home if I'm on my own. I'll sometimes put on music TV or a YouTube playlist if I'm doing housework or getting ready to go out and want music.

I listen to music on headphones from my phone, or on my laptop at work occasionally, and often have CDs on in the car. But I have no need or desire to have music on in the house all the time.

anniehm · 06/11/2018 22:46

We play music through the PlayStation (Spotify) downstairs (all connected up to speakers) or Alexa upstairs. Radio goes through freeview.

zeezee3 · 06/11/2018 22:48

Seems odd to me yes. I play music every day, and my soul would die without it.

anniehm · 06/11/2018 22:48

Oh do have a radio but prefer radio 4 or 4 extra tbh. I have radio 2 in the car

Notveryadventurousname · 06/11/2018 22:48

Love live music though, DC are in bands and orchestra and something about that performance only existing in the moment is far more special than any recording.

Suzeyshoes · 06/11/2018 22:49

Same as you OP, I didn't realise so many people weren't bothered by music when it's such a huge thing in our house. There's nothing like dancing to our fave tunes when we're feeling stressed :)

I always find it weird going to somebody's house for dinner and there's no background music. Like totally silent so when it goes quiet you can hear the knives on the plates. So awkward!

MyOtherProfile · 06/11/2018 22:49

We all listen to music loads, go to lots of gigs and listen at home. We have phones, tablets, earphones and little speakers. But I would never put music on when someone comes over. That woild feel antisocial to me. Definitely no music over dinner because i want people to chat.

maplebaconbun · 06/11/2018 22:50

I use my laptop if I'm in the mood for some music and it's usually good enough for me . Agree sound on phone is crap but I rarely listen to music anyway.

Sitranced · 06/11/2018 22:50

We have a speaker in every room of the house all linked on a network to play simultaneously. Music is playing all day everyday in this house. Even the radio is on overnight, I find it comforting waking in the middle of the night to sound of voices.

SaltyPeanut · 06/11/2018 22:52

Sounds to me as if you don't get why people would want to listen to tinny hissy piss poor quality sound when listening to music. I'd get that if that's your reasoning. There's no richness when music is played through a phone or tablet. PC with a decent pair/set of external speakers and being able to tweak via a bit of graphic equaliser software is ok and is my current set up.

It actively makes me wince to listen to music through a mobile phone, the high pitched tinny range of noise sort of annoys my auditory senses.

People on buses thinking they are showing off their super funky stylee, their look at me with my super cool phone/brilliant taste in music, sitting there blasting out their tinny little tunes, makes me cringe from the sound and because it's so pathetically naff.

longtompot · 06/11/2018 22:55

We have a surround sound system for the telly which we also play our music through. I also use it to Bluetooth connect my phone so I can listen to my Deezer playlist through decent speakers. I hate not being able to play music. I listen to it a lot, much to my dh despair. I am currently looking for some small but good speakers to plug my record player into to I can listen to my vinyl Grin

Penguin34 · 06/11/2018 22:57

I just ask Alexa to play

Exhaustedmummy1811 · 06/11/2018 23:02

I love music and hate being without but I have a really bad neighbour. Over 5 years she has made our life hell but the thing she complains most about is noise, DIY, children playing, walking up stairs to loudly silly things. The council have told me I can't even sing in my home because it is disturbing her day to day life (I sometimes used to sing quietly when hanging the washing out) I wanted to kick off but it was just easier to comply so I got rid of anything that can play music (even my phone) just so it can't be used against me

5foot5 · 06/11/2018 23:15

Wow, talk about extremes!

From I would have absolutely no concern if music did not exist. I find a lot of it annoying and repetitive (Really? Is that across all music and all genre? Don't you find any of it moving, uplifting, calming, cheering, exciting?)

To I need music on constantly (But don't you ever need a bit of silence to listen to your own thoughts? Or to whistle)

I guess I am in the middle somewhere. I like a wide range of stuff but I also have no problems with silence.

Elphame · 06/11/2018 23:30

I guess my phone and laptop would play music if I wanted them to.

I rarely listen to music and don't watch TV. Silence is bliss

e1y1 · 06/11/2018 23:34

I actually have a “sound system” (and a VCR Blush) and never use it, even though despite it’s age I can connect my phone to it.

Mind, besides the standard way of phones/iPads, can play through all TVs, numerous Bluetooth speakers (at least 4 different ones), a Bluetooth soundbar or through the home cinema surround sound system (bypassing going through the TV) although escapes me why, as why wouldn’t I just go through tv?

Cheeeeislifenow · 06/11/2018 23:38

I can play CD's on the telly... Digital music I have a wireless speaker.. I listen to radio on my phone all day or podcasts

LoniceraJaponica · 06/11/2018 23:39

I play music either by listening to the radio on the TV, or through a Bluetooth speaker from music stored on my laptop or phone.
In the living room we play CDs (yes, we still have those!) in the Bluray player. The sound comes through the soundbar that came with the TV.

You have given me a great idea of what to get OH for Christmas. A decent set of speakers is a brilliant idea.

DD listens to Spotify on her phone or laptop, usually through a headset. And OH plays music on his desktop in his office (he works from home).

MrsStrowman · 07/11/2018 00:29

I'm with you OP we have three DAB radios (all with auxiliary or Bluetooth input) one in the kitchen, one in the third bedroom/office, one in our bedroom, a Google home in the dining room, a Bluetooth speaker lamp in the living room (great sound quality) and an older but still very good mini system in the second bedroom (DAB, CDs and a tape deck!). So only the bathroom without music really, we had a shower radio but it was rubbish, I do take the DAB radio from the office in the when I'm having a bath though.

JackSpraggon · 07/11/2018 00:39

We don't and TBH, I have no real interest in music at all.

JackSpraggon · 07/11/2018 00:41

(Really? Is that across all music and all genre? Don't you find any of it moving, uplifting, calming, cheering, exciting?)

Not really. I can't say I've listened to every type of music but I wouldn't be too bothered if I heard none again.

RavenLG · 07/11/2018 00:59

I couldn’t imagine life without music. I’d much rather get rid of the tv and internet before music.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 07/11/2018 00:59

No music player here, I have youtube on the laptop and an analogue radio in the kitchen. Don't know anyone who plays music during a dinner party, what a way to drown out debate and conversation.

As for kids, well dont they listen to music on their tablets? I mean who wants Frozen blaring out around the house 24/7

I suppose its just another way to boast, by saying you have the latest state of the art sound system/HD TV/Tesla sports car etc Yawn!

MyOtherProfile · 07/11/2018 05:28

Don't know anyone who plays music during a dinner party, what a way to drown out debate and conversation
For this reason we have sometimes asked restaurants to turn down their music too.
