To think not having a way to play music in your house is weird?

Had a playdate with someone recently, got talking about how my ds loves to dance to the moana soundtrack and my friend said "ah that's nice, we don't have any way to play music except through the telly or on my phone"

Surely this is all kinds of wrong. Everyone should have some kind of sound system surely?

It's not cos they can't afford one btw they're just not bothered.

If it wasn't for DP, I wouldn't have one... maybe an old CD player

TheWiseWomansFear · 07/11/2018 13:51

I can just Chromecast from my laptop to my tv though

TheWiseWomansFear · 07/11/2018 13:53

Oh, here we go.

The old 'you don't like music? You're an unnatural freak'

Not everyone has the same interests OP, yes, including the ever-revered music!

TheWiseWomansFear · 07/11/2018 13:56

DP and I discovered that, though I like music I don't know what any of the bands are called or the songs, I just like it if it comes on. But, I can't get anything productive done with music on like him because my brain keeps refocusing away from my task and onto the lyrics. It's annoying. So I mostly have silence or audio books (which I can tune out).

LoniceraJaponica · 07/11/2018 13:58

"I have a record shops worth of vinyl, similar amount on CD and have never streamed music."

I got rid of my vinyl records when our record player died. I prefer a clutter free way of playing music. One flash drive vs a shelf full of LPs - it's a no brainer for me. We still have CDs, but I have copied most of them onto my laptop.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 07/11/2018 14:10

Oh, I have an iTune library full of the CDs and working through the vinyl. It is almost all fully mobile, that's why we needed the 160G pods.

But I love the act of putting a record on, pawing over the cover, turning it over, listening to an album, as the artist intended it to be heard. It is a completely different style of music consumption to just having music playing in the background.

I have done that since I was a small child. I get that an 'album' is an outdated concept these days, but I still love that style of music consumption.

I have a digital radio in the kitchen or use my phone/the iPad. We don’t even have a tv. It just isn’t really a priority for us tbh. I think we might have a small Bluetooth speaker somewhere that we used for a bbq once? 🤷‍♀️

SaucyJack · 07/11/2018 14:17

I must confess that I’ve faffed about with the PC on the back of this thread, and having the speaker in the kitchen with Absolute 90s going did making doing the washing-up marginally more fun.

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 07/11/2018 14:18

Apart from Alexa I don't have a sound system.

FuzzyShadowChatter · 07/11/2018 14:47

Honestly never thought about it before. I haven't had a separate music playing gadget since I left home. We run most things including our main PC through the TV which has pretty good speakers which is the main way we listen to music together, but I and my older two spend far more time listening to music through headphones through various devices.

I mostly use my laptop with headphones. I don't think most people want to hear me play the same song 20 times in a row which is not uncommon for me when either stimming or destressing with music and I like the feel of my cushy headphones.

My older daughter does like dancing around to music though, which she does either with the TV or her tablet. Might consider getting her something small she can use as it is true that tablet music is quite tin-ny and bleh. Not sure what I'd be looking for though as I haven't really looked at those sorts of things in a while.

EthelHornsby · 07/11/2018 15:03

I have my phone, TV and a radio in every room. Almost never listen to music though, I never have

bumblingbovine49 · 09/11/2018 11:53

This thread has clarified exactly why I can't be bothered to work out how to have music in the house.

AI said in my previous post, I do like silence quite a lot over having music all the time in the background but I did used to have a CD player and lots of CDs and did used to play some music in the house sometimes. However DH put all of the music on the CDs on the laptop digitally a few years ago and we got rid of them (took up too much space) . I agreed to this at the time but it has turned out that I just don't use the electronic formats at all
DH listens on headphones while he works but I really find that distracting so having music on my laptop seems pointless. Also I struggle to find what I want as I often forget the names/bands so can't always find the music I want. With CDS I scanned them visually and would usually find what I wanted quite quickly

Thinking about it I do miss having music out loud at home occasionally (mostly as a motivating force when I need to do the cleaning Grin) but the absolutely bewildering variety of ways you can do that nowadays (evidenced by this thread) just does my head in and I can't be bothered to sort it out. .

I prefer podcasts or audio books to music when I am walking etc so use my pone and headphones for that and I do this for free (Radio 4 and castbox). Whenever I download music apps, they seem bewildering to me and I struggle to understand how to use them and I actually use apps on my phone for lots and lots of things so it is generally just music apps I struggle with. . Also they cost too much for me.

We do have a radio so I listen to that sometimes and can also tune in to TV music channels if I want but setting up something to play music I have bought and selected is just to much of a technical pfaff for me

I mourn the days of phyisically buying a cd/record/tape, putting it in a music player of some sort and pressing play. It was so much simpler - bah humbug!!

CuriousaboutSamphire · 09/11/2018 14:03

bumbling if you are ever passing you are more than welcome to come and browse my CDs and records, I no longer have the tapes unfortunately!

You can play anything you like as loud as you like, the neighbours can't here much of it at all Smile
