Not even sure this is allowed... but I have an almost 3yo who is now noticing and asking questions about how I wee without a willy!
He keeps saying stuff like "you do a wee out of your that bit" and pointing. I just want something to refer to it as, which doesn't sound ridiculous. I know it is called a vagina but i don't really want to call it that to him, I'm not sure why but it kind of sounds wrong at age 2. My mum used to call it 'a Mary' which i don't like!
Does anyone have any suggestions

What Wannabe said.

kaytee87 · 03/11/2018 09:49

@RiddleyW DS tries to pull up my clothes to see what I'm actually doing.
He thinks it's hilarious seeing DH pee.

Shednik · 03/11/2018 09:50

Lady bits / girly bits
They also know the correct names.

Fanny is really rude here! Like cock or dick.

RiddleyW · 03/11/2018 09:50

Yes my DS thinks his dad peeing is hilarious. He calls me to come and see sometimes - yeah I’m alright actually DS.

Fightthebear · 03/11/2018 09:55

It’s always been vagina/willy/balls here. There’s a difference between using a common slang word, like willy vs penis, and a made up word no-one else would understand.

And if Mums don’t discuss their genitals with their sons we’ll bring up another generation of men who don’t know what a clitoris is.

ItWasntMeItWasIm · 03/11/2018 09:58

Haggisfish I let them watch me wee and poo so they can ask questions

I honestly for a second thought you were referring to your students Shock

TheOnceAndFutureQueen · 03/11/2018 10:07

Some time before DD turned 2, she pointed at her vagina while getting dressed and asked what it was. I told her it was her vagina and she immediately shortened it to Gina (pronounced jy-na). That's what it continues to be in our house now that she's nearly 4.

She told me the other day (in public toilets) that she wees from her Gina and her brother wees from his willy. I corrected her and later she told DH "daddy, I've got a Gina and a reethra!"). I was quite impressed she remembered urethra - I was half expecting it to become a wee wee hole or similar!

ItWasntMeItWasIm · 03/11/2018 10:10

When I was young it was "keyhole" and my brothers had "tails". No idea how these names originated but bet there is a story behind it Grin

For my own kids I just used willy and girly bits.

PerverseConverse · 03/11/2018 10:12

Please use the correct anatomical terms. The amount of women I hear on here that say they shave their vagina is astounding. How can you shave something that is internal?? It's a vulva. Maybe if everyone used the correct terms then we would t have so many ridiculous names for them and embarrassment when it comes to using the correct ones. My three year old knows he has a penis and testicles. My daughters know they have a vulva, wee out of their urethra and have a vagina.

kaytee87 · 03/11/2018 10:19

wee out of their urethra and have a vagina.

Surely it's urinate instead of wee?

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 03/11/2018 10:20

We just call it a fanny! It's a bit 1970's admittedly 🤣 but vulva sounds too scientific for little kids imo.

Fanny sounds more like the equivalent of willy.
They can still learn penis / vagina / vulva later.

I wonder if those little girls who have been taught to say that they urinate out if their vulvas also have a feces instead of a poo?! 🤣

Pebblespony · 03/11/2018 10:22

Glad I didn't call DD Mary now.

As far as I can remember it wasn't referred to at all other than phrases like "down below" and "underneath" (never ever front bottom). Boys had a willie to pee out of and just girls didn't have anything worth mentioning.

But my parents were a bit repressed, I was a child in the early 70s, and they never spoke about anything like that. I'm still waiting for my birds and bees talk!!

Between friends at school we used fanny and vaginia (Scotland), but they were words that were not used at home.

OhTheRoses · 03/11/2018 10:24

All those who don't use the proper words or at least teach the proper words, do your dc say ta, instead of thank you. If expectations re speech and vocabulary are low then neither will develop beyond average levels.

EK36 · 03/11/2018 10:24

I use their proper names..vagina and penis. Kids need to know their real names.

honeylulu · 03/11/2018 10:28

In our house:
Vulva = flaps
Urethra = wee hole
Anus = poo hole
Vagina = baby hole

My kids know there are proper names and I'm not averse to them hearing them but I tend to use slang generally (yes I do say wank, shag etc, not in front of kids obviously) and the above are quite descriptive and therefore not liable to be misinterpreted.

i know flaps is probably considered a bit vulgar but it's kind of stuck now

Orlande · 03/11/2018 10:33

How often do small children actually need/want to refer to their vagina? Surely it only comes up in the context of periods/babies.

I have no issue with simple names for things eg wee hole, poo hole. But I think it is worth talking about the actual area you're referring to.

It's a big shame that there isn't a widely used kid-term for vulva that is equivalent to willy.

Zara87 · 03/11/2018 10:34

Flaps... hahaha. Well they are flaps of skin!

Also round here fanny is rude. Not full on swearing but i guess at school it was the equivelant to being called an arsehole.

So if I refered to it as a fanny I would feel it appropriate to call my bum an arse too!

OP posts:
ifoundthebread · 03/11/2018 10:35

We use Gina (she can't say vagina) and penis. Girls have a Gina and boys a penis - and everyone has a bum 😂

Orlande · 03/11/2018 10:40

It is a bit odd getting hung up on making your kid use the 'correct' name and then using it incorrectly Grin

Like insisting on saying anus instead of bum/bottom.
"Sit your anus on your chair"
"Pull your trousers up over your anus"
"Don't pinch his anus"

RiddleyW · 03/11/2018 10:41

Pinching someone’s anus and pinching their bottom are very different.

RiddleyW · 03/11/2018 10:42

Oh which is your point, sorry!

Orlande · 03/11/2018 10:42

Exactly!

Orlande · 03/11/2018 10:45

I'd say foof or noonoo refer to the whole vulva, whereas vagina is one specific hole.
