It seems like in MN world there are all kinds of rules that I swear I’ve never seen expressed or followed in real life. What have you been most surprised by? I’ll start:

  1. Adults don’t celebrate birthdays, and if you expect any recognition of yours, you’re being childish.
  1. Halloween is exclusively an American import with no history in this country, and celebrating it is therefore tacky and meaningless.
  1. Trick or treating is glorified begging.
  1. Absolutely nobody other than you or your DP is remotely interested in your pregnancy, and even telling another person that you’re pregnant is akin to riding a donkey down the high street while calling for palm fronds to be laid at your feet in recognition of the impending miracle of your unborn child.

That people can get really wound up about child car seats.

If your child is not rear facing until they are 16 and a half they will definitely DIE

GunpowderGelatine · 29/10/2018 22:05

But what has your own actual life got to do with a comment on this thread? You realise that poster doesn't know you or your situation?

Someone below put 'MIL are evil'. I adore my MIL, it's like me berating that poster for what they said because some of us have great MILs.

StripySocksAndDocs · 29/10/2018 22:07

Someone please explain to me, in great detail, what sootikins is?

I need to know but am too scared to google...

@IAmGrootGrootGroot - Let Urban Dictionary expand your knowledge www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=sootikin 😀

I have another - there is only 'more to the story' when it's to do with someone else, never the OP.

Example:
OP: My MIL hates me, she refuses to see me and has turned everyone against me, for no reason whatsoever. She sees the kids and DH but says if I ever darken her doorstep she'll have me killed. I've been nothing but nice to her. WIBU to say she can't see the kids anymore?

MN: It sounds like there's more to this story

OP: there isn't. She hates me for no reason. I'm lovely to her. So lovely in fact that when I won £3million on the lottery I gave her every penny.

MN: are you sure there's not more to this?

OP: I promise you. She just hates me for no reason.

Right-o

FascinatingCarrot · 29/10/2018 22:10

Glad it's so hilarious to you. Here's an actual verbatim quote from my MIL, three days after the birth of my first child

Your words...read back. Wheres the hysterical crying in the bog one to back this up?

GunpowderGelatine · 29/10/2018 22:10

Electric it's a lighthearted thread and I honestly think you're taking it far too personally. I don't think your kind of situation was being ridiculed at all.

But they're not - these are exaggerated examples of the daftness on MN sometimes. For example I put earlier something about "kids have 5 meals a day and 45 snacks" - no one has ever lobster they do that, it's parodying the many many posters who insist that kids should be constantly fed, and exaggerating for effect.

There's a few things on here that could apply to me, I don't take it personally because it isnt about me and the same applies to you

bellsbuss · 29/10/2018 22:22

The way LTB is used for everything, if everyone took this advice onboard the divorce rates would rocket. All money is family money, only 2 of my friends have one pot of money. Just move house over minor issues, it costs thousands and thousands to move house. Even if you're a SAHM all household chores and childcare must be split 50/50, I don't know any couples who do this in RL.

I learned that milk is a food not a drink and doesn't quench thirst apparently 😂

IAmGrootGrootGroot · 29/10/2018 22:27

@ElectricMonkey you're making yourself look abit silly now.
You jumped on that PP for no reason at all.

Surely you can see that?
This is clearly a lighthearted thread, you jumped on in, trying to kick off and make that poster feel bad. There was no need for that.
Have a chat with your MIL if their are unresolved issues 🙄

@StripySocksAndDocs I'm scared to click the link.... going to try now...

Children who behave badly have SEN
Adults who behave badly are Autistic
Adults over 50 who behave badly have dementia
MILs are at fault, DILs are never vindictive arseholes
Men are always at fault for relationship breakdown, women are faultless
Women always have their childrens best interests at heart and don't use their DC as weapons (IRL I know quite a few who alienate their kids from the fathers)
You should be supporting your 25 year old offspring as they are still developing.
You should invite your childs bully to birthday parties
You shouldn't let your 30 10 year old walk to friends 3 doors down, far too young.
Children are liars/have misunderstood every situation.
Male partners are useless manchildren, but its wrong to point out that you choose them to father your children, that is victim blaming

Anyone looks at you the wrong way, log it with police
The police have a log of every perceived slight..

The answer to every family disagreement is NC

New mothers should tell MIL to wait until graduation to see child but their own mother is there at the hospital.

Loyaultemelie · 29/10/2018 22:32

That everyone can afford regular nights out/weekends away and expensive (apparently outing) hobbies

That vegetarians and vegans should be locked away in room 101 for inconveniencing the rest of the world.

That you should never drive a diesel car even when towing big loads.

That when something gut wrenching or genuinely heartbreaking happens there are people here who have your back and can send a huge outpouring of support and love that I have never been lucky enough to receive in rl.

That I was much better off not knowing what a sootikin was

IAmGrootGrootGroot · 29/10/2018 22:32

@StripySocksAndDocs ...so it turns out I didn't really need to know what a sootikin was...

Thanks very much for the link, really glad I didn't google an image 😂

bumblebee39 · 29/10/2018 22:33

Only just realised what a "CF" is...

So the abbreviations.

& just how different from normal I am. Everyone always says I'm so normal but obviously I live in a bubble because on here I'm often an odd ball 🙄

sweeneytoddsrazor · 29/10/2018 22:35

@ElectricMonkey it is a lighthearted fun thread not a bitchfest. If something on it has upset you it wasn't intentional. You should have just left the thread instead of kicking off

SparkleBanana · 29/10/2018 22:37

If a child’s father wants to spend time with the child alone - he’s abusing your child, he’s emotional abusing you, LTB & block contact.
If a child’s father doesn’t spend as much time with his child as you think he should - he’s a shit father, showing his true colours, LTB.

OP - thanks for that @ 1reply, I knew I wasn’t. Hmm

If you don’t bathe your baby daily you’re neglecting them, you should be reported.

Going back to work after maternity leave - why did you have kids you didn’t want?
