An Indian restaurant in Nicholson Square, Edinburgh. The wait for food was bad enough, until what turned up being inedible to the point of making one gag. And the whole place was filthy. Still makes me shudder 5 years on.

Restaurant on lake Bodensee. Dd2 ordered no 76 (spaghetti bolognese) from the menu and instead she was presented with no 76 (plate of boiled fish). We ordered it with GCSE German and the pointing fingers AND used the word spaghetti (international word) so you know , we were pretty clear.
She was 5 years old so unsuprisingly wanted spaghetti and not a plate of weird sad fish.
When we pointed out the waiters mistake and asked for spaghetti he lost his shit. Ranting away in German, arms waving, slamming doors. Then there was a massive row between him and the head waiter dude. Everyone in the restaurant went all silent and opened mouthed APART from a nun in full nun outfit who was texting on a pink rhinestone mobile phone the whole time and didn’t look up once.
The waiter stormed out.
We finally got the spaghetti after we had all finished and dd had a few mouthfuls and said she didn’t like it.
😐

Without hesitation, a pub on Paignton seafront. There was brown goo oozing out of the kids fish fingers and our baguettes were part baked and they’d clearly microwaved them as they were raw still.

As a family we still talk about it regularly!

LBOCS2 · 27/10/2018 19:20

@ChodeofChodeHall Little Bay is still there! It's a bit marmite - I personally think the food is bizarre at best, and really crap at worst, but I also know people who really like it because it's just plain weird - both in terms of menu and decor.

Top three worst meals:

  1. Frankie and Benny's (any of them. But in particular the one in Purley Way retail park)
  2. Bella Italia who served me burnt pasta swimming in rancid vegetable oil then tried to tell me that was how the meal was meant to be
  3. Jamie's Italian (Brighton). I can't even remember why it was so crap but remember coming out of there feeling like we'd been ripped off and that the food was terrible.
listsandbudgets · 27/10/2018 19:21

Has to be an Italian I once ventured into. The carbonara sauce served luke warm at best clearly came from.a jar and the pasta was over cooked to the point it was rubbery

It was only topped of by the pudding.. something that was supposed to come woth meringue didnt and wjen I queried this they looked extremely puzzled and finally bought out a bowl full of a white glutinous liquid which on further investigation turned out to be uncooked meringue mix.. I.e. egg whites and sugar!! We refused to pay for that dessert

We did not return. It was actually quite an expensive restaurant as well . Unsurprisingly it closed within 6 months and is now the site of a very good Indian restaurant

A restaurant in a chain hotel near BILs. Him and SIL are obsessed with the place.
I literally think they have no taste buds as the food is overpriced shit.
I ordered lamb with tomato/olive sauce.
I got lamb that was heated through but not ‘cooked’ so chewy and bland and some heated tinned tomatoes with a few olives chucked in - unseasoned.
They puddings were equally woeful.

I refuse to go back. They also always want takeaways from some of the worse places ever.

They did also once took us somewhere where every single dish had black pudding in it - everyone. Bizarre. I hate BP. They push to go back regularly.

BriocheBriocheBrioche · 27/10/2018 19:22

ChalkHill I’m sure I know the exact tea room in Stratford upon Avon you are taking about! They did indeed survive in child labour - I worked there age 14!

TeachesOfPeaches · 27/10/2018 19:24

La tasca near Liverpool Street station. No idea how is it still open

puzzledlady · 27/10/2018 19:26

Hawksmoor in London. Dreadful steak. Overpriced. Awful.

ChipsAndKetchup · 27/10/2018 19:28

@MawkishTwaddle total agree on Claridges. Took my parents there as a 'treat'. The staff were beyond arrogant (that Fred twat was the worst). The service was dire and the food fucking shit. Living off his brand!

Nanny0gg · 27/10/2018 19:29

Frankie & Benny's.

Was ok when it first opened but now any that I have had the misfortune to eat in have been dire.

Badbadbunny · 27/10/2018 19:33

Bella Italia at York. Despite being half empty, made to wait 30 minutes before being seated, then another hour for the food. Ordered a steak well done and it actually arrived completely black and burned - when mentioned to the waitress, no apologies, she just said you asked for it well done. I had lasagne which was awful - I've had better frozen from the supermarket. And the price for such rubbish! Never again.

Also Frankie & Benny at Morecambe - ready to order to be told they had no steaks, none at all! How can a restaurant simply not have any (we suspect the chef was off and they had no one who knew how to cook them!).

19lottie82 · 27/10/2018 19:38

Harvester.

rosettesforjill · 27/10/2018 19:39

@LBOCS2 and @ChodeofChodeHall I was wondering if we should try Little Bay as it always seemed well reviewed on Tripadvisor, even though the menu looked odd. I will avoid now!

19lottie82 · 27/10/2018 19:40

Another vote for frankie and bennies being up there. Why they are so popular is beyond me.

GinIsIn · 27/10/2018 19:40

River cafe. Chalky, tasteless risotto and “gluten free bread” that was, without a doubt, the worst thing I have EVER eaten. I actually had to spit it out, as did my mother who insisted on trying it becuase she was “sure I was just making a fuss”. It was like a cross between rubbery scrambled eggs and a pancake. Just vile.

Uniquack · 27/10/2018 19:41

I used to enjoy Frankies and Bennies, but not the last couple of times. I was told by the manager that they were all forced to changed the decor, the music and the food to 'fit in' more with what people want. Apparently they were too old fashioned!

ConfusedMum82 · 27/10/2018 19:42

A pub in Lower Earley.
Went for lunch at 1pm, in this big pub there was DH and I, a couple and a guy at the bar. One guy was at the bar chatting to him instead of serving. Another greasy looking guy walked from the kitchen after quite a while as I was debating us leaving. He then walked past us again, slowing down to give me a death stare. We were starving though and bar an Asda there was nothing else nearby.
Finally managed to get the barman to serve us so we ordered drinks and food. Had to pay full price for my lunch despite not wanting one of the sides which I thought was off.
Took my cola outside and I thought it tasted weird but thought maybe it was some variation like Pepsi.
Food arrived and mine was practically launched on the table by the death stare guy.
Had mostly eaten when I tasted something acrid and like plastic in my mouthful, so spat it out into a tissue. It was indeed burnt plastic. Moved the rest of my food around to find tiny flecks underneath everything amongst bigger bits. Took the last gulp of my cola to take the taste away and realised the weird taste was something neon pink dried in the bottom. We complained but got told to contact head office by the death stare guy, who was grinning at me the entire time.
Within hours I had the worst food poisoning I've ever had. Literally ill for 48 hours, was awful.
I've no doubt it was done on purpose, because he heard me saying about we should leave, and that's why he grinned like a twat when we complained.

Jezebelz · 27/10/2018 19:44

Mr Wu Chinese buffet in London's West End. Is it still there?

All you can eat buffet for a fiver seemed like a great bargain but there's only so much onion fried in MSG you can eat.

flowerygirl · 27/10/2018 19:45

Frankie and Benny's is diabolical. I wouldn't mind if it was cheap but it's not.

anniehm · 27/10/2018 19:50

Jamie's Italian - no taste except chilli, since when was that in all Italian food. We only went to an Italian because my parents don't do spice! Fifteen however was excellent (some years ago)

ByGaslight · 27/10/2018 19:53

Jamie's Italian in York. We were taken by a lovely friend and I was cross on her behalf. Huge hangar-like room, cold, noise bouncing off every surface. Starter of raw and unpeeled veg rammed in a jar. Pasta like you make when you're a student, out of tinned toms and bits of peas and carrot. Seafood dish with two stiff old prawns on top of a rubbish heap of gritty rice and veg parts. We didn't linger for dessert.

sheldonstwin · 27/10/2018 19:54

Just to say, I have eaten quite a few times in Jamie's Italian in London and Brighton and really enjoyed the food.

ainsisoisje · 27/10/2018 19:55

A neopolitan pizza shop in Leeds. Served us raw pizza, you could scrape toppings right off and the dough clearly wasn’t cooked underneath. We quietly mentioned it and instead of sticking back in the oven for longer the waiter came back and said the chef said that’s how it’s supposed to be and we’re told that’s how it’s served in Naples!!! We paid up but had barely eaten any of it and I’m not sure any neopolitan would have let it pass their lips. Really has stayed with me as a place to avoid for appalling customer service. Also the name of a well known shoe brand of anyone wants to avoid!

usernamenamename · 27/10/2018 20:00

Chinese restaurant/takeaway in Harlech the whole thing was just weird and vile. Never again.
