Will a&e refer me to oral surgeon ASAP? 6 month wait on nhs and I’m in agony

I think you’re better going to an emergency dentist.

Ring 111 in the morning.

What makes you think a and e will help? Are you unwell?

RLOU30 · 26/10/2018 22:03

Call 111 they will help with an emergency dentist (they did for me). Don’t go to a&e they will most likely turn you away

Shriekingbanshee · 26/10/2018 22:04

I've done this, and no. Pain relief and AB'*s if needed. Dentistry works differently. If there is emergency dentist in hospital they might out temporary filling or something, but will refer you back to own dentist for follow up.

Sounds like you have something else though possibly? Like wisdom teeth needing extracting/other. Unless that was emergency (unlikely)/refer to above

Goingcrazyah · 26/10/2018 22:05

Likely to send you away

Shriekingbanshee · 26/10/2018 22:05

But yes, get them from a&ee. The pain can be excruciating, and some infections are risky (if that's what it is)

LosingLola · 26/10/2018 22:06

A+E will tell you to go back to your dentist. They won't do any referrals, and can't treat unless you're really ill in a way that's threatening general health (eg mouth so swollen you can't breathe, dental infection spread into sepsis). You might be given pain relief.

They can get you stronger pain relief, as you shouldn't have to suffer like this. It's awful, and you won't sleep so you may as well be waiting in a&e. Have you been using paracetamol and ibuprofen, alternating for better relief?

emmapemma91 · 26/10/2018 22:08

My wisdom teeth are infected and on a nerve. They need extracting. Dentist referred to oral and maxillofacial but the list is 6+ month. I’ve been in constant pain for 2 month, can’t eat or sleep properly. Had antibiotics x2. Been to dental hospital they won’t touch bottom teeth due to the nerves. I need a proper oral surgeon. Was thinking of going To minor injuries with the hope of them referring to oral and maxillofacial unit which they have on site.

Tried alternating codeine and ibuprofen, doesn’t take the edge off anymore

PurpleDaisies · 26/10/2018 22:09

That won’t happen, unfortunately. Dental pain is horrible. Flowers

Shriekingbanshee · 26/10/2018 22:09

Oh you poor thing. So wrong this.

OscarWildesGreenCarnation · 26/10/2018 22:10

Is this your wisdom teeth OP, as in your other thread? Did you go to out of hours doctor and minor injuries already? Clearly you need better pain relief but I'm not sure A&E is the place. If not been already, call out of hours and be very very clear on the level of pain. Good luck. Flowers

Shriekingbanshee · 26/10/2018 22:11

Your GP and/or dentist needs to change up your referral to put it top of list. I had this done, what a relief to get them out

emmapemma91 · 26/10/2018 22:11

Tried dental hospital, they won’t touch them 😭 they extracted upper but refused to do lower

OP posts:
Blobbyweeble · 26/10/2018 22:13

They might refer you but you won’t be any further up the list. You might, on the other hand, be lower down the list. A&E will give you some pain relief and possibly antibiotics if there is a current untreated infection and refer you back to your dentist. It’s not a short cut to going up the waiting list.

Shriekingbanshee · 26/10/2018 22:15

Get emergency pain relief definitely and dont let them turn you away they are the only ones who can help, and that level of pain IS an emergency.

Is a lot easier than having a doctor come all the way out to you, unless there is out of hours surgery you can get to, as they can give strong pain relief also.

I really feel for you, what a combination!

No. The emergency department is not able to fast track to outpatient services. Particularly not when the service you’re trying to reach is run by a different professional group.

It will admit you under the care of a maxfax surgeon if you require emergency (not urgent cos it’s sore-and I don’t doubt it’s sore) treatment. Emergency surgery is performed generally for airway compromise or systemic illness.

You’d be better trying to see an emergency dentist if your area has one. If the issue is one of pain relief the ooh gp should be able to manage that.

If you have huge facial swelling/restricted mouth opening/difficulty breathing or are unable to swallow then A&E is the right place to be. If not they will not be helpful-they have no dental training.

emmapemma91 · 26/10/2018 22:16

Honestly don’t think I can put up with the pain another 6 month. They haven’t even x rayed yet.

OP posts:
bershetmelon · 26/10/2018 22:17

In short no A&E won't. They may give you more abx and pain relief but you will probably already have the same ones and they will refer you back to your dentist. Unless you're willing to pay for private you'll probably end up waiting for the remaining months, unless they get a cancellation and you're willing to take that spot.

Shriekingbanshee · 26/10/2018 22:18

It's not a 'shortcut' tactic, you absolutely MUST be short-cutted to the top of the waiting listed as an emergency! No, dental will not touch but hospital need their doors banging on for a emergency immediate referral, ahead of anyone else not suffering like this

DaisyDando · 26/10/2018 22:20

I’m so sorry. I went to A&E with tooth pain/infection once because I couldn’t stand the pain and the doctor reluctantly gave me strong painkillers and I think antibiotics. I wasn’t in pain for anything like as long as you, so I just wanted to say good luck.

Shriekingbanshee · 26/10/2018 22:21

Please don't describe OPs pain as 'sore'.

I find that a truly shit way to talk to someone in such pain. Is this the way you patronise patients where you work?!

Shriekingbanshee · 26/10/2018 22:23

And ignore pp whonsay don't go.
Get yourself down there and out of pai as soon as is feasibly possible. Screw those that say its sore and you've probably got enough pain relief at home
You need powerful pain relief for a dental nerve that's infected, and at the back near the throat, should be checked

Livpool · 26/10/2018 22:24

I was in active labour for 29 hours and still think really bad toothache was worse!
