Will a&e refer me to oral surgeon ASAP? 6 month wait on nhs and I’m in agony

areyoubeingserviced · 31/10/2018 18:51

The type of pain the OP has is excruciating.
Serious dental pain is worse than labour

emmapemma91 · 31/10/2018 18:53

I asked her for a prescription for painkillers she said go to the GP Hmm

OP posts:
Shriekingbanshee · 31/10/2018 19:01

Wtf?! Don't dentists do pain relief now? Doesn't this dentist need complaining about, letting you leave there without proper pain relief?

emmapemma91 · 31/10/2018 19:05

Hoping to get a emergency app at a different practice tomorrow although don’t think it’ll make much of a difference, might get some kind of painkillers at least

Mrsmorton · 31/10/2018 19:15

Dentists can't prescribe anything stronger than OTC painkillers on the NHS.

Calm down shriekingbanshee what's the dentist supposed to do? Magic the teeth away? "Have a go" at taking them out?

Or refer and signpost. Which she has.

FML. No wonder we're leaving the profession in droves.

WombatStewForTea · 31/10/2018 19:32

That's interesting MrsMorton. When I had a similar thing a few years ago the GP was adamant they couldn't give me any stronger pain relief as they weren't insured to my dentist should prescribe instead.

emmapemma91 · 31/10/2018 20:17

Yeah when I went to minor injuries they give me co codamol but said the dentist could prescribe stronger

Shriekingbanshee · 31/10/2018 23:20

In the meantime, whilst all the slopey shouldering going on, OP been left in pain, has been to see all and apparently no one can prescribe, what is this?!

Plessis · 31/10/2018 23:23

I went to a and e with toothache. I was genuinely frightened I was going to overdose on painkillers. They put me on a drip and gave me some amazing painkillers. I cried Blush

Plessis · 31/10/2018 23:24

My dentist can prescribe dyhyrdrocodiene, but he was private not NHS

Aintnothingbutaheartache · 31/10/2018 23:27

You really shouldn’t be going to A&E with toothache.

RedSoloCup · 31/10/2018 23:28

OP I had to wait months, sea salt rinses literally 5-6 times a day did stop the pain but I had to keep doing it religiously, using boiled water, hth I know how painful it is

teaandtoast · 31/10/2018 23:31

I think if anyone says you shouldn't be going to A&E with toothache, they've never suffered a bad toothache.

Shriekingbanshee · 31/10/2018 23:32

Sea salt rinses stop nerve pain?

Japanesejazz · 31/10/2018 23:43

When I had an infected impacted wisdom tooth if someone had given me a gun I would have shot myself. The pain is unbearable and relentless. I went private to get it sorted OP, also found that swilling around the area with ice cold baileys and an ice pack held on my face was the only thing that provided any relief

IvorHughJarrs · 31/10/2018 23:51

Shreiking I don't think your hysterical criticism of other posters is helpful. Lots of posters have confirmed that going to A&E will not help and, while it is awful for the OP to be in such pain, there are procedures which dentists, doctors, etc have to follow

Mrs Morton On the prescribing issue, can dentists still prescribe dihydrocodeine? It used to be on the dental list
In our area GPs have been complaining about the numbers of patients coming to them asking for pain relief for dental issues, often having been told to by the dentist so are increasingly refusing due to pressure on time and budgets with the blessing of the CCG

Someone upthread suggested a pain clinic may help with pain relief. Our area has huge waiting lists for this, far longer than the wait for an oral surgeon

seventhgonickname · 01/11/2018 00:20

Clove oil,if you can stand the taste is what I used along with all the pain killers.Rub it all along the gums with your finger and keep reapplying. Not perfect but does help.

Shriekingbanshee · 01/11/2018 00:36

Ivor yes, yes hysterical women! Really?

I would go there, and I recommended OP go there, whats your issue? what's your answer? What should she do? Have you rtft? Many found their only relief there, as did I. So, what's your view?
Who are you to go round calling women hysterical? How patronising.

Shriekingbanshee · 01/11/2018 00:39

Dentists, doctors, have procedures, yada yada ya...they are there to serve patients, and this one is being badly failed, screw your procedures!

Disneyfan18 · 01/11/2018 00:44

You have my deepest sympathy tooth pain is the absolute worse! Don't remove your teeth though I did it once out of desperation I drank a load of vodka and got the pliars. Blood everywhere! Did you get the oralgel? Also ask for some tramadol?

todayisnotthedayy · 01/11/2018 01:55

Jeezzzzz @Disneyfan18 were you ok? Did you have to get it fixed after that?

Aintnothingbutaheartache · 01/11/2018 01:58

Agree tooth pain is awful but A&E is not the place really.
Go to a dentist and do not block up places for heart attacks, rta’s, Ill babies etc

Aridane · 01/11/2018 05:31

Yeh - because utter excruciating pain is not a matter for urgent medical attention Hmm

Aintnothingbutaheartache · 01/11/2018 20:47

Excruciating tooth pain doesn’t come out of nowhere. It’s definitely not an accident and while really hideous, often doesn’t qualify as an emergency.
My point is that the NHS is stretched to breaking point. There are emergency dental services.
I wish op all the best and hope she feels better soon

3luckystars · 01/11/2018 20:57

Vodka.

Or another spirit, you dont need to drink it, just take a gulp and let it seep in to the tooth that is hurting. Let it get right down in to the nerve. You can spit it out then.

This was the only thing that gave me any relief at all.

I genuinely would go tomorrow and get a second opinion from another dentist. There is something radically wrong here if you can no longer open your mouth and someone needs to fight your corner. This is an emergency, you cannot open your mouth properly!

Where are you? Roughly.
