You need some stronger painkillers. Ask for stronger cocodamol 30x500 they worked for me when the lower dose doesnt

Blobbyweeble · 26/10/2018 23:15

What pain relief would you advise then?

YetAnotherThing · 26/10/2018 23:17

Sounds grim. If you are only taking ibuprofen then also try taking paracetamol too. They work differently and so are safe to take together.

In terms of expediting: find out the name of the consultant you have been referred to (if you don’t know already call the oral surge secretaries on Monday to find out). Then ask your dentist to email/write to them directly to expedite. Also you could drop the Consulant a letter yourself too and explain you’re in agony- If they don’t know you’re in pain they can’t expedite. Good luck

Tramadol may help

emmapemma91 · 26/10/2018 23:18

@shaz my normal dentist took a standard X-ray then referred me for bigger one. Dental hospital won’t touch it because they’re dentists not oral surgeons. I also have TMD

You have my upmost sympathy OP.

Toothache is horrific. I had to last 4 days in severe pain with 111 being not very helpful. Basically the nerve in my tooth was dying and the pain it caused was unbearable. I spent those days in agony, even moving my head caused me horrendous pain. My dentist eventually agreed to see me and at that point I just wanted the tooth out, so out it came.

The only thing that gave slight relief every now and then was paracetamol and codeine. I had the codeine left over from a previous thing and I was very thankful for it. Don’t wish to repeat that experience ever again.

I hope you get sorted soon Flowers

SilverHawk · 26/10/2018 23:20

Is it pain or an abscess?
If it is an abscess, I would think they must see you due to the risk of septicemia. It is life threatening.
I know. The abscess was only just lanced in time and has still left damage.

8DaysAWeek · 26/10/2018 23:20

So strange how the dental hospital won't pull them. You'd think the best hospital for dental surgery would be...a dental one?! I'm getting mine pulled next month at the dental hospital (by max-facial sx) after a 20 month wait since referral. It's also sitting on a nerve so they need to leave part of the root in as they risk nerve damage if they interfere with it.

But I've only had 2 bouts of bad infection/pain in that 20 months - which were HIDEOUS, and, as many have said already, worse than childbirth. I can't believe you are having to go through this. You need to go back to your dentist crying and pleading until they fast track your case to extreme urgency.

I'm not sure what you should do in the short term but would have thought calling 111 would be the first step. Really hope you get sorted soon Gin

Blobbyweeble · 26/10/2018 23:20

Tramadol would possibly be prescribed by a Gp or a dentist( not sure if they can) but ED are very unlikely to prescribe it although they may give a one off dose.

emmapemma91 · 26/10/2018 23:21

My treatment option was to get top wisdom teeth extracted (which I did) and wait for app For oral surgeon for bottom

OP not on strong pain relief
I've had my fair share of absesses, and codiene, paracetomol and ibuprofen don't touch it.
It's really unfair to be saying some.of the things being said on here, pretty damned rough to someone with dental nerve pain and infection. No, going to a&e doesn't push her up the waiting list, but she can have access to proper pain relief, with 4 DC to look after she deserves some.proper support to get her through each day and night.

Aridane · 26/10/2018 23:23

A&E can and does prescribe tramadol (last time mother was given it for back pain)

Shriekingbanshee · 26/10/2018 23:24

Of course they do prescribe stronger, yes Aridane

anitagreen · 26/10/2018 23:24

@emmapemma91 have you tried co codamal? Anything codeine based? I had what you had an infection in the nerve of my tooth luckily they pulled mine within the week, but they had to treat the infection first. the only things that helped me was cocodamal sorry if I've spelt that wrong. And clove oil on the infected bit of the tooth ( I had a hole so could access it unfortunately) x

Shriekingbanshee · 26/10/2018 23:26

Shes on codiene and often has paracetamol combined

shouldwestayorshouldwego · 26/10/2018 23:28

We have accessed maxfax through minor injuries but for a different issue. It was though in itself an emergency but it did mean that we saw a consultant sooner.

user764329056 · 26/10/2018 23:28

You have my sympathy OP, have had two abscesses in the past and if someone had offered to cut my head off I would have taken them up on it, the pain was indescribable, I remember pacing all night and setting off at 6 to walk 4 miles to be at a dentist’s door when they opened, really hope you get some urgent help

Aridane · 26/10/2018 23:29

Good luck at A& E, OP Flowers

anitagreen · 26/10/2018 23:30

Sorry missed out those posts I hope you get it sorted out x

jq28 · 26/10/2018 23:30

Oral and maxfax won't touch you at this time of night unless your airway is being compromised.
Emergency dentist is your best bet in the morning. Unless there's a swelling of course go to A and E.

Shriekingbanshee · 26/10/2018 23:31

user you walked 4 miles, you poor thing thats agony with nerve pain, as every footfall hits the ground.

2isabella2 · 26/10/2018 23:32

@ileclerc there is an out of hours/emergency dental line in Berkshire - 111 gave me the number after I dismissed their advice to take my child to a&e for a tooth trauma (she didn't need a&e, just a dentist). They were great and I got the advice needed on the phone and saw normal dentist the following day.

OP toothache is the worst pain I've been in and went on for a week, not months like you. I think you should go to a&e if the pain is terrible.

bimbobaggins · 26/10/2018 23:35

It’s awful op you really have my sympathy and I hope you manage to get something sorted asap.
I’ve been suffering really bad toothache myself the last few weeks and it was actually getting to the stage I was thinking I’d rather be dead than suffering this pain. Fingers crossed that the dentist has taken the nerve out my tooth will help but I’ve heard so many stories about root treatment I’m dreading it coming back

Ontheboardwalk · 26/10/2018 23:45

I’m sorry for you emma why did the dental hospital send you away?

Relative of mine got referred to oral surgey and it was a 2 week cancer referral. Rng 111 and see what they say

shazeviltwinsw000ooo · 26/10/2018 23:45

The only way to have your consultation expedited is with a urgent letter from your GDP explaining the pain your in, sent straight to the department secretary. There is still a wait for TMT after the consultation but if a patient is in pain we try to have you seen quicker but is usually still a few weeks instead of months. The only exception to this rule is a oral cancer pt as other pts are cancelled to accommodate the more life threatening condition. I'm not saying the process is the best but unfortunately that's how it is in NHS hospitals currently. Why couldn't the oral surgery dept at dental hosp treat you? Is there a longer wait list than your local hosp?sorry you seen to be getting sent from pillar to post. But really a gp can prescribe stronger painkillers than any dentist
can due to prescribing protocol. Try using warm saltwater mouthwashes as this helps keep infection at bay.A&E can't get you seen on an outpatient clinic the rules are very strict.
