Will a&e refer me to oral surgeon ASAP? 6 month wait on nhs and I’m in agony

All you saying a and e is not the place can fuck off.

Until you've suffered a huge jaw and tooth infection that literally makes you want to kill yourself then stop your holier than thou crap.

They were happy to help, I ended up in a drip.

Save your rage for the pissheads that end up in a and e because they feel like a bit of sympathy.

Schuyler · 01/11/2018 21:27

Not all toothache is an emergency but excruciating and uncontrolled acute pain needs medical attention.

emmapemma91 · 01/11/2018 21:30

@3luckystars I’m in Newcastle.
Only 27 days until my outpatient appointment not that I’m counting Hmm

Emma,
Are you having nerve pain or unable to open your mouth because those are very different issues?
Reading your posts it's difficult to work out what the main cause of your pain is at the moment..Is the pain on one side or both? When were your top teeth taken out?
You've said on another thread the teeth are broken and have deep roots. Go back to your dentist and ask them to dress the nerve of the tooth.
They can do that even if the tooth is impacted unless your TMJ dysfunction is bad and you can't open your mouth enough to get to the tooth/teeth. This will settle the nerve pain whilst you wait to be seen by MaxFac.

Aintnothingbutaheartache · 01/11/2018 22:59

Ok sorry forget I even spoke. Yes, by all means go to A&E with toothache. Chances are you’ll sit there for at least 4 hours.
And yes, I have had unbearable toothache, and I agree it’s the worst. Mine was a dry socket following wisdom tooth extraction.
I’m not belittling anyone’s pain just trying to point out that there are other services available that might give op quicker and more effective treatment

emmapemma91 · 02/11/2018 07:11

@millymolly sorry if it’s unclear. My wisdom teeth are snapped, dentist unable to pull bottom ones as roots are on a nerve.
Been referred to maxillofacial but around 6 month wait. Tried dental hospital, they pulled top but wouldn’t pull bottom either.
Unable to open my mouth more than slightly since top ones were pulled which I’m not too worried about, I think that’s normal.
Tried minor injuries who gave co codamol then said to back to dentist for stronger pain killers and get urgent referral.
Went back to dentist who said she wouldn’t refer urgently and go to GP for stronger painkillers.

Would a nerve medication like Gabapentin help with the pain?

Schuyler · 02/11/2018 14:27

Have you seen your GP? They will be able to prescribe something stronger and as AwakeNow said, a nerve medication also.

emmapemma91 · 02/11/2018 16:16

Just sick of everything at the minute. All upper right jaw bone has been throbbing. Guessing it’s referred pain from the bottom tooth ?

easyandy101 · 02/11/2018 16:37

Is the nerve exposed?

I've got a hollow tooth, that goes all the way to the nerve. Every time a dentist looks at it they go woah. My options are removal, or erm, removal. Cos the rest of the tooth is so fragile they also think it's gonna break and then I'm gonna need surgery to get the rest out, which I'm not really up for (buries head) So I just keep on having it temporarily filled.

One time I couldn't get it filled for whatever reason and I washed the hole out well with corsodyl and then packed it with cotton wool, which I changed every day. I found that keeping it covered and clean meant that I didn't get infections and the pain was minimized. It ticked me over for the few weeks until I could get it filled again. I don't take any antibiotics (allergic to a lot and have very bad reactions with many others) and managed to ride out the infection side of it with otc pain relief

I also find diclofenac to be the best pain relief but don't think this is available otc in the uk

ps I'm not a dentist or medical professional and follow my advice at your own risk.

The dentist I saw after the packing it with cotton incident said she was quite impressed with my solution so I guess there's not much wrong with trying it?

ChiantiAndTruffles · 02/11/2018 17:44

@easyandy101 probably worth getting dentist to check how your upper wisdom tooth extractions are healing. You might possibly have a dry socket if pain if from the upper jaw.

emmapemma91 · 02/11/2018 17:49

@easyandy definitely going to try this it’s excruciating at the minute so can’t do much harm

emmapemma91 · 06/11/2018 20:33

That’s it actually can’t fucking cope anymore. Going up a&e in morning!

Hand-holding Flowers. I really feel for you, its truly awful. Really is. Can't believe you have lasted it this long. I hope so much that someone will help you

Teenagemaw · 06/11/2018 21:26

I had a similar pain from an infected tooth. By the time i got to the dentist on the monday after no sleep for 2 nights he told me i should have gone to a&e as they could have given antibiotics and pain relief. Hope you get relief soon x

Flowerpot2005 · 06/11/2018 21:35

OP you're GP is an idiot.

Call them & say you want them to write to the department & expedite the appointment. Basically that means, your GP writes to the department explaining your issues & need for being seen sooner. Consultants will triage when received & make a decision, it's worth a try.

ENT & MaxDax often have an issue with head & neck cancers/ v serious issues because these take priority appointment wise.

ivegotthisyeah · 06/11/2018 22:45

it's worse than child birth. I went to a&r with an infected impacted wisdom tooth he pain was horrendous and my neck and face had swollen so much I could t talk I was advised to go to a&e before it affected my airways. They gave me pain killers and antibiotics. Mine would flare up rather than constant so I don't know how on earth your are coping it's the worst pain in the world. I would defo go.

Good luck I got mine taken out in hospital was the best thing ever. Painful after but totally worth it x

millymollymardy · 07/11/2018 00:57

Emma go back to your dentist not A+E.
A+E can give you pain killers but your dentist can dress the tooth/teeth nerve to ease your pain whilst you wait for the consultation.
Call them as soon as they open tomorrow and ask for an emergency appointment.

emmapemma91 · 07/11/2018 08:02

Getting emergency appointments to ask her to dress the tooth but wouldn’t she have already done it? If she won’t I’m going up a&e I’m in agony, face is swelled, lymph nodes swelled and TMI have diarrhoea probably from the amount of ibuprofen I’m taking on a empty stomach.
Can’t get any other painkillers as GP has no appointments just want to cry Sad

Raw garlic (crushed) and rubbed onto the site of pain Flowers

emmapemma91 · 07/11/2018 08:35

Thank you @Fallen will try that

OP posts:
Outedsochanged · 07/11/2018 09:00

Try this, it may work for you. It did me last week when I couldn't focus because of the pain and maxed out on over the counter meds. Get an ice pack. Hold it between your thumb and first finger. Takes about 15 minutes for the pain to dull down. The theory goes it messes with your brain and makes it focus on the cold rather than the tooth. I didn't believe it but was desperate. It allowed me to get a bit of sleep. At the stage you are at its worry trying anything

emmapemma91 · 07/11/2018 09:23

@outed I have an emergency dentist appointment, going to beg her to pack it or kill the nerve or anything. Such a shame she can’t just pull it

OP posts:
3luckystars · 07/11/2018 09:57

I feel so sorry for you. You have been put from pillar to post and have been totally let down and left suffering.

It's scandalous.

Shriek · 07/11/2018 11:45

Oh I hope you get some relief any time now
