Is she a Russian Blue or have I been ripped off?

Hello MN! Sorry I'm posting for traffic!

I got my beautiful kitten a few weeks ago. I was told she is a Russian Blue. I saw her mother and photos of the Father. However the seller has failed to forward on the family tree I was promised.

To me, she looks like a Russian Blue but I've noticed sometimes I can see she has stripes? Anyone have an experience with Russian Blues or know how I can check?

TIA

I had a Brown Burmese with a Pedigree of several pages. When she laid down in the sun, she had stripes! It is good, and just shows that all cats come from the early Asian wild breeds.

I thunk that you need an extensive research trip to Russia, during which time I can cat sit 😺

Sheepish79 · 28/10/2018 07:24

You can have her DNA tested , there are several firms who specialize in animal testing which can be found on the internet. They will confirm whether she is a Russian Blue or not and you can take action if you wish from the results .

Looks like a Russian Blue to me but you need her papers from the breeder. I have a Thai/Korat cross and she came with a detailed pedigree and is registered with GCCF.

OP she is gorgeous. I have no interest in cats, but I love a beautiful cat pic.

I love Russian blues - my piano teacher had a blind one called Saul who was the sweetest, loveliest cat ever - I’ve always wanted one. More photos!

I have no idea, but I expect you love her now so hopefully her pedigree or lack of is not really an issue. Nobody likes to be duped but she's a lovely, pretty little cat. Enjoy

I kind of think it is important. How likely is it that a reputable, cat focussed breeder will sell a cross breed or a cat that isn’t what they have led you to believe?

So the conclusion i would draw is you haven’t bought from a reputable or ethical breeder. The “oh we don’t really care about pedigree” or “at least we rescued her” attitude may make people feel a bit better but it leaves the breeder out there free to make money off these tricks, and likely not be caring properly for their animals.

So i absolutely think it should be questioned, and if no luck reported to rspca, trading standards, named on social media, and whoever is enforcing the new laws on animal breeding.

She’s a lovely cat, op :). I think my rescue is part russian blue as her colour is amazing- so much so she was used as a kitten machine and dumped at a rescue when her condition got so bad they had no further use for her :(

Yes I agree, I wouldn’t give up the cat but I would pursue that breeder by all methods

takemetomars · 28/10/2018 08:37

I have 3 Russian blues, all champions.
I would say that your kitten, based on the pics, IS a Russian Blue. Coat, face shape etc all typical

worridmum · 28/10/2018 09:08

Be warned unless you are paying atleast 1500 for the test the results will ve skecty at best. DNA tests in depth as what you need for ansetry is time-consuming and expesive.

My younger brother specialises in bioarchealogy (the genetic side) and his lecturer sent off dog DNA to one of the sites claiming they can tell were your anstors came from for the low price if £200 instead of coming back as inclusive (dog dna is NOT human dna) it said he had anstors from Africa.

Reputable labs will charge between £1000 to £1500 since realistically thats how much it costs due to cost of machine and man hours as well post results analysis.

A cat being a lovely grey does not make them a Russian Blue. This obsession with having a pedigree or part pedigree (when actually they’re a bog standard but gorgeous moggy) is very weird.

BackToTheFuschia7 · 28/10/2018 10:58

Also, if this kitten was really bred by a reputable breeder (I’d bet my house she isn’t) then the paperwork would have been supplied. If it wasn’t, you would have recourse through the GCCF. But they won’t even be a registered breeder.

Anyone hoping to own a pedigree should first seek advice of the relevant breed club who can recommend reputable, ethical breeders.

Your cat is glorious OP, in fact all the cats are. I have promised myself that I will be crazy cat man when I get a permanent address. Until then I'll live vicariously through The Litter Tray.

Thank you all for sharing your photos of your cats.

BlueCurious · 28/10/2018 12:48
