Is she a Russian Blue or have I been ripped off?

Hello MN! Sorry I'm posting for traffic!

I got my beautiful kitten a few weeks ago. I was told she is a Russian Blue. I saw her mother and photos of the Father. However the seller has failed to forward on the family tree I was promised.

To me, she looks like a Russian Blue but I've noticed sometimes I can see she has stripes? Anyone have an experience with Russian Blues or know how I can check?

TIA

sorry to hijack this thread but I am thinking about getting a russian blue. (rescue cat) My choice is because I react to normal cats and I have read that russian blues are hypoallergenic for most people? Do any of you with russian blues have any experience of this? Does anyone have any advice on where I could go for Russian Blue cuddles to check this out for myself?

Itsear · 26/10/2018 16:47

Very cute kitty. But reading this thread I can’t believe that people are paying £800 for a kitten. Rescues are rammed with 100s of gorgeous cats/kittens for around a £80 rehoming fee.

YAbVVVVVU if you don’t post more pictures!!

UpstartCrow · 26/10/2018 16:50

Holymosquito IDK about breeds, but I've found I'm more allergic to male cats than female, even after they've been neutered. Apparently there are wet wipes you can use to remove the dander.

BonfiresOfInsanity · 26/10/2018 16:51

Holy mosquito I don’t have allergies but Russians don’t shed much so I think that’s why they might have that reputation. Lovely, good natured cats though. Two of mine were adopted at 18 months and settled beautifully.

Bluntness100 · 26/10/2018 16:55

Gosh, I'm no cat fan, but that's one of the cutest kittens I've ever seen.

Our adopted brothers..

My previous Grey was regularly taken for a Russian Blue (including being asked the question by the vet). On the basis that her two siblings were a grey tabby and a pale ginger (farm kittens - £50 for the three) I was never under any doubt. Grin.
OP - without a pedigree your cat is a moggy - but an absolutely lovely one. Grey cats are best.
Here is my picture of my current long haired grey moggy from Battersea.

Look at Bonfires two. Look like they own the place and so regal.

I think it helps that the kitten is being photographed with a grey background too. Enjoy her. Yes, you might be been ripped off- did someone say £800!! But she is here now. We have a Siamese down the road. Sits in the middle of the road and wont move. Its a quiet road but these posh cats just make me want to go and get one - our ditsy black Lab might have something to say about it though.

GlassOuijan · 26/10/2018 17:11

That is one stunningly beautiful cat. I always wanted a Russian Blue as a child. No idea if yours is the real deal, though.

I'm always a bit sceptical about pedigree papers. I have a beautiful pedigree dog. Neighbours decided to get the same breed after admiring ours. There's has the relevant pedigree papers, but my god I think they've been duped! Their dog is an unusual build for this breed, and lacks the characteristic hair pattern. It looks just like a cross between the alleged breed and another, similar breed of dog. I haven't said anything to them, of course.
Not sure how the kennel club can be sure of a dogs parentage ... the offspring may the result of a chance encounter whilst out dog walking!

Rebecca36 · 26/10/2018 17:16

If the op was told they would receive relevant papers about their little cat's ancestry, they should. Ask for them, there may be a reasonable explanation for the delay.

I paid nothing for my Russian blue, adopted him because owner died but he was very young. She had got him from Battersea!

H1dingInSight · 26/10/2018 17:23

My DM bought a Siamese kitten from a reputable breeder when I was a little girl. How I loved that kitten! He was so docile and happily spent his days purring on my bed. His name was Button.

Anyway, his papers didn’t come through and didn’t come through, and eventually my DM stopped chasing the breeder as she always had a reasonable excuse.

When he was 6 months old, he sickened and died in agony in my lap, from an incurable genetic lung condition.

My DM eventually contacted the registration people herself and got his pedigree records. There were only 5 cats on the whole thing, going back to great-grandparents. All champions, but he was so in-bred he never had a chance.

So in your place I’d keep pushing for that pedigree, and hope the only thing wrong is that the paperwork isn’t quite legit.

Secretarchersaddict · 26/10/2018 17:27

She looks a little more like a Korat than a Russian Blue - both are equally gorgeous!

ThistleAmore · 26/10/2018 17:33

What a beautiful cat. You're very lucky.

I've owned horses all my life - many of them incredibly well-bred TBs, Anglos, WBs etc with pedigrees as long as your leg - but my most successful competition horse has been my current mare, who we call 'the brown and white Irish bog pony'.

No idea what her heritage is - we suspect she was the result of a wee fence-jumping incident - but she's great and she's mine and we love her, so that's what matters.

All my cats are moggies and rescues, too.

MrsMoastyToasty · 26/10/2018 17:36

I love these photos. We had 2 cats who were the result of a pedigree female being a total floozy with the local unneutered tom. They had the vivid green eyes and the grey/lilac fur.

Maelstrop · 26/10/2018 17:39

In fact, pedigrees tend to be physically weaker.

Great to see the hybrid vigour myth live and kicking on mn!

IndigoSpritz · 26/10/2018 17:46

If the OP's pussycat mews with a Moscow accent then she is a Russian Blue. Try calling her Olga or Sergei and see how she reacts.

Isn't it true that all domesticated cats have tabby stripes, often very faint and only visible in a certain light ?

FlippyNeck · 26/10/2018 17:51

My Russian Blue has faint stripes, especially noticeable on his tail. I have his full pedigree papers (going back several generations, I know more about his family tree than my own!) and I saw both parents. She looks like a Russian to me - totally gorgeous. I was only saying yesterday that I'd love another kitten, this pic has really set me off!

FlippyNeck · 26/10/2018 17:55

@Holymosquito, I got my RB because I'm allergic to most cats. Absolutely no problem with him, I visited him twice before taking him home in a house with many RBs and his parents so I was pretty sure I'd be fine.

FredMerc and Grumpyoldpersonwithcats

LOVE your moggies! I love smiley cats! Our Mr. Bigglesworth (aka Biggie) also loves to smile when petted - especially if he is petted by Daddy. (We suspect that in the Biggie universe Daddy hung the moon.)

VillanellesBrownWig · 26/10/2018 18:10

Gorgeous kitty ok 😻

Jux · 26/10/2018 18:28

It would be very easy for a BYB who often have a several KC registered dogs to put KC papers to a non KC pedigree dog
As long as you have the relevent KC papers for mum and Dad dog often its a dog that passed away but they didn’t notify the KC club of its death so technically the dog is still alive or they sold the dog on but not with it’s KC papers

Then if you have a litter from a non registered KC dog if it’s the same age you can use the dead dogs KC papers to say that the litter is KC registered even if it’s not
I know this happens because it happened to me ages ago we still have Ddog though

Seeing as certain breeds of KC dogs can go from anything from 1000 -2000 it’s worth flipping the papers from the BYB point of view

irunlikeahipoo · 26/10/2018 19:53

GlassOuijan
You need both mum and dad to be registered KC papers in order for the pup to be registered KC pedigree
But as I mentioned above if you have the old KC papers you can use these
Or if you have a friend who has a KC dog you could use there papers as there is no restriction on male dogs being fathers but there is a limit on females and the amount of litters they can have up to a certain age / amount of litters. This is why there are lots of dogs that are KC registered but are nothing typical of the breed. But people think KC reg means that the dog is of the correct parentage

I would never buy a puppy again unless I could see both mum and dad together and the relevant KC papers at the time of purchase

Housecoatdiva · 26/10/2018 19:55

Gorgeous! 😍
