...to buy Christmas presents from Aldi's wtf aisle

What the title says really. I really love Aldi and their wtf aisle every week. I've since converted my husband who is now equally if not more excited at the workshop range of goodies.

Anyways they've got some great pots, and candles and quilts which I think would make great presents but would people judge me as cheap? (Last year the Christmas desserts I've taken to my in laws have always gone down well and they only eat m and s)

I can always be persuaded to go to Aldi because of the wtf aisle (great name!) They had horse rugs last weekend! Amazing. Bloody horse is a popular size, unfortunately. I got lebenkuchen instead Blush

I want the dog toy basket, looking round the lounge, I need it and I want to teach ddogs to tidy up after themselves. Grin

Honeyroar · 24/10/2018 22:08

I missed the heated throws too! When were they? I could've dished a few of those out as Xmas presents!

Missed the horse rugs too. Were they any good?

LadyPeterWimsey · 24/10/2018 22:50

It's the Aisles of Temptation here. And I might be worryingly familiar with the Special Buys section of the Aldi website...

Jeanclaudejackety · 24/10/2018 22:51

About 2 yrs ago I got some fake dubarry style outdoor boots from aldi and they're still going on strong to this day

cfb35 · 24/10/2018 23:43

Lidl and Aldi love 'em and more cost effective than Costco where it would be quite possible to leave with a hot-tub and an inflatable kayak if it wasn't for me only having a hatchback to transport!!!

This makes me laugh

kateandme · 25/10/2018 01:09

great candles there.
the pjs around chrismtas are fab.love the thick mens checked pjs.(for me)
the lounge-wear and sports stuff can be really good too.

kateandme · 25/10/2018 01:12

I assume you all no that most/some of the stuff in the isle is also sold via there website now too.and some only online.

TheLittleDogLaughed · 25/10/2018 04:18

Oh, you mean the Aisle of No Return? So called by dh as I go to browse and don’t come back.

Silly thing but I bought a fantastic set of mixing bowls from there which I would be lost without. 7 sizes and they stack away so neatly - small kitchen.

GirlFliesHome · 25/10/2018 06:55

Sorry to miss the horse rugs. A few years back I loaded up on some really lovely halters and haynets

BiscuitsWithEverythingPlease · 25/10/2018 06:58

I think part of the problem is that the media, particularly TV insist on calling Aldi and Lidl "discounters". They are major brands selling goods and produce at realistic prices, not discounters. I've been shopping in both for years as their olive oil and jars of anti pasti have always been great quality, but back then they were way cheaper than Tesco and the other supermarkets. Clearly they have had an influence because Tesco and the like ended up introducing cheaper 'continental' ranges to combat the threat. Which shows how the big supermarkets have been ripping off us shoppers for years... IMHO! Anyone who judges others because of where they shop needs to get a bloody grip. Actually, judging others about anything is pathetic. Live and let live. 😁

BertieBotts · 25/10/2018 08:39

They are discounters here in Germany, that's what the business model is called. We also have more like Netto, Penny and Treff 3000 (which have just been bought by Netto, but has the most ridiculous name, so I included anyway.)

They're called discounters because they keep prices low as their range of standard/everyday goods is small and limited, many don't stock big brands (both lidl and aldi do these days) and then they have rotating seasonal ranges (the aisle of shite, but also their fresh food) meaning that they don't really need big warehouses to store all of their stock and they don't have any deli counters etc, it's all self-serve and prepackaged. And their stores tend to be decorated in a very basic way with plain shelving, baskets, fridges etc. All of this allows them to keep prices low - but they offer a different experience to a larger supermarket which will have 30 kinds of yoghurt, a range of baby clothes/toys/kitchen utensils available year-round, a fresh fish counter, etc.

Cambalamb · 25/10/2018 08:57

Yes Bertie and because of their limited range they sometimes run out of something for a few weeks as they may only deal with one supplier. I forgive them this as I cannot stand the large supermarkets for my weekly shop.

Cambalamb · 25/10/2018 09:00

Oh yes I forgot I got a gorgeous tweed dog basket/cushion in Aldi very cheaply. Same thing was in Pets at Home for over £40. Still going string 2 years later.

haloumi · 25/10/2018 09:05

YANBU ...

If people don't like the gifts, they can , frankly FRO

StompyDino · 25/10/2018 10:05

I am much happier than I should be about this Blush

I would judge.
It would make me proud to have you as a friend or relation. For me it puts you in a good light. Aldi stuff is great quality and a good price. You would have bought me lovely things without breaking the bank. (and anyone else love the time saving relief of finding exactly what you want without having to compare 70 odd different brands of identical produce?)

Dontsweatthelittlestuff · 25/10/2018 11:31

From the 1st November it is wooden toys in Lidl
www.lidl.co.uk/en/MiddleofLidl.htm?id=872&week=2

Just as good as anything you will buy for twice the money elsewhere

Dragonlight · 25/10/2018 11:42

This thread inspired me to go and wander the Aisle today. Alas, only garden items and mens clothing to be found although I did manage to grab some delicious looking christmas biscuits and chocolates for hampers, so I am happy!

GhoulishGremlins · 25/10/2018 11:59

@Dragonlight

Do you mean Spekulatzius? They're divine.

LonelyOversharer · 25/10/2018 13:17

Ahem...absurdly pleased. Dd2 loves odd cushions, loves sloths, no brainer christmas pressie sorted. I got to Aldi at 0910. 2 sloths left and I bought one of them!

Luckily my dc are all to big for gorgeous wooden toys, or I would have just bought the lot!

Last year from Aldi I bought my young nephew some Man City pj's and my sister told me they were his favorite present and he cries when they have to be washed and he can't wear them. They do sell some nice bits.

DaysOfCurlySpencer · 25/10/2018 15:21

The great thing about Aldi and Lidl is where else can you pick up avocados, milk, shampoo, wine, garden chairs, drill bits, thermal leggings, Cypriot cheese and German gluhwein all in the same place?

ASDA
Tesco
Sainsburys
to name a few, and the avocados won't be rotten the next day either.

tillytrotter1 · 25/10/2018 15:32

I have a few bits and pieces bought from Aldi 40 almost 40 years ago, a useful box of bits like fuses, picture hooks, eyelets etc, and a few old spools of thread in hideous shades, the nice ones long ago used. Really, I should have a sort of out my sewing box.

Cambalamb · 25/10/2018 15:45

I buy avocados in Aldi every single week. Not had a rotten one yet.
