How long between waking up and leaving house?

Generally, I give myself two hours to drink coffee, do my hair (I have very long, thick hair which I blow dry into submission) and makeup. I don't have a massive beauty routine (just primer, foundation, liner, blush, mascara) but I do like to take my time. It does feel like a massive waste of time though but I guess I enjoy the "me" time..

Also, if my hair is "clean"/looking decent it cuts my time down to 1 hr 10ish.

Yes I have no kids..yet.

I’m useless in the mornings and always full of admiration for people who are up and about pre 6.15am.
Me too. I hate early mornings. But my theory is that being woken by an alarm is just as bad at 5am as it is at 7am. So may as well just get a head start and avoid traffic jams (jams being the thing which propel me out of bed when I working in the office. If I am WFH then I am a lazy fucker)

Did spend about 10 minutes of my commute wondering wtf I can’t get up when my alarm goes off, I was dead to the world when it did this a.m. and that was going to sleep at 9pm last night.
I also have a theory that the more you sleep the more you sleep. I spent about 6 months of my life in a job where pretty much every night was party night, but as long as I was in bed by midnight, I would jump up at 7am and be bright as a button. Anything

Lovemusic33 · 22/10/2018 10:04

I have 2 kids, we are often up and out the door within half an hour. I don’t wear make up, wash my hair in the evenings (shower/bath) and I’m usually at the gym or pool by 8am.

Allgirlskidsanddogs · 22/10/2018 10:06

On a school day with work and @ daughters. Alarm just before half 6, out of bed after the news, shower etc, dressed and downstairs for 7. Girls’ hair, breakfast, animals and cup of coffee, leave the house by 7:40. So about 65 minutes from feet on the floor to leaving.

It takes the same amount of time on a non work/school day or more if we’ve got it.

littlemisscomper · 22/10/2018 10:09

Are there really, hand on heart, completely honestly, people that wake up and leave the house within a 10 minute time slot?!! Really? I don't see how that's physically possible.

I like an hour, even though I shower the night before and don't do anything with my hair or apply makeup. It gives me time to wake up properly, get my stuff together and have a quick play with the dog. I can do it in half an hour if I sleep through the alarm but I hate the adrenaline rush of thinking I'm going to be late.

bigsighall · 22/10/2018 10:09

The first time about 4 mins. Roll out of bed, chuck on jodhpurs and a jumper and off to yard. To get ‘work ready’ when I get back usually about 20 mins to shower, wash and dry hair, some rushed makeup, feed dog, load dishwasher and out the door. I am supersonic in the morning tho!
Disclaimer- I usually turn up to work with makeup down my face, hair looking a mess and some errant hay stuck somewhere despite showering!

DontCallMeCharlotte · 22/10/2018 10:10

Two hours here too thanks to body clock. But I enjoy getting ready in a leisurely fashion, including a half hour bath with my first cup of tea of the day Smile. Also includes a quick dog walk and making packed lunches. No DC obviously!

Once I'm out of the bath, getting ready only takes half an hour, including hairdrying (if I've washed it that day).

ChampooPapi · 22/10/2018 10:10

And I used to not care what I looked like when I was younger but as time wore on i'd get to the afternoon and catch my reflection in the bathroom Hmm

What looks ok at 7am by lunch really looks very untidy. Plus in a lot of jobs its really unexceptionable to not care what you look like. So many people say 'i don't care' but a lot of employers, or the people who are in contact with you (school children if your a teacher, general public if your in the service industry ect) do.

My mother in law is like this, she is a well off hippy and does look kind of fabulous in her disarray. But she has never worked and just doesn't really understand that most normal folk have to have fairly regulation brushed hair and wear a fresh shirt ect.

She always says 'be more free and relaxed, take more you time and get up a bit later so your more rested'

This is to my mother who is in a child protection job and obviously cant go in with her breath smelling and her hair looking mental Hmm

WonderTweek · 22/10/2018 10:11

For some reason it used to take me longer to get ready pre-kids. Now it’s about an hour but could do it in less. I don’t shower in the mornings but I drink coffee and do my face for about 10 minutes, then get dressed and pack my and toddler’s bags and then get toddler up and sort him out. He’s under 2 so I like to give us time in case anything unexpected (tantrums, poonamis) happens. 😂Before having kids I’d do everything slowly and smoke and drink coffee for ages. Haha.

ChampooPapi · 22/10/2018 10:11

*unacceptable

AhoyDelBoy · 22/10/2018 10:14

@littlemisscomper
I don’t really see how it’s possible either Shockor less than an hour with kids? I don’t really know how long it would take now I’ve got a baby. Probably 1.5hrs Confused

ChampooPapi · 22/10/2018 10:15

@WonderTweek so true! If I didn't have to leave early when I was younger it would take me hours to get myself together, all interspersed with the mandatory smoking breaks and coffee drinking

QueSera · 22/10/2018 10:17

1 hour - to get myself ready for work and little one ready for school. Shower, breakfast etc.
Can be done in less if needs be.
However, if washing/drying/straightening my hair, a bit longer. I saw a quote which describes me, something like: "I always have time to wash my hair; I just rarely have the emotional energy to dry it."

Stuckforthefourthtime · 22/10/2018 10:18

This thread is helping me to understand why most people's hair looks much fancier than mine most days Smile

1 hour and a bit
20 mins feed the baby while gently herding older 3 to get dressed and ready (they sort their own breakfast, which has saved 10 mins here!)
20 mins quick shower, get dressed, makeup
20 minutes increasingly frantic herding of older 3 / nappy changing / pushing out the door

If I'm washing my hair I'd add 10-20 more minutes, but now my DH has to leave early I usually do that at night.

ManILurveCake · 22/10/2018 10:20

I allow myself 2 hours. That's includes:

Loo
Shower
Hair
Makeup
Breakfast/drink
Washloads
Tidy round

I'm normally ready about 15/30 mins before I need to leave but I'd rather allow too much time & take my time than get up late & be rushing around.

ChampooPapi · 22/10/2018 10:20

Getting ready in 10 minutes is not possible, you can leave the house dressed and with your bag, sure. But you are probably not ready unless you are a particularly stunning teenager with perfect hair and skin who has washed the night before.

For most adults going into a job who leave 10 minutes, No one who is looking at you thinks your 'ready'

GreenDinosaur · 22/10/2018 10:20

Do none of you ever go for a poo and spend a while on the loo? Confused

amusedbush · 22/10/2018 10:20

I wash my hair at night so that I get more time in bed in the morning.

On a typical weekday my alarm goes off at 7am and I finally get up around 7:30 to be out the door at 8am (train at 8:10). My commute is a five minute walk to the station, eight minutes on the train and a ten minute walk to work.

amusedbush · 22/10/2018 10:21

Do none of you ever go for a poo and spend a while on the loo?

I'm an evening pooper, but it doesn't take that long!

OhDearGodLookAtThisMess · 22/10/2018 10:21

From alarm going off to leaving the house, it's about an hour and a quarter. Actually getting out of bed depends on whether I need to wash/dry my hair or if it's my turn to walk the dog, but I can do the dressing, makeup, breakfast and making packed lunch in about 35 mins. If dh is leaving early (he often works from home), I usually wait until he's left the house before getting up, as he irritates me by getting in my way!

Kids grown and independent now.

Strawberrytraveller · 22/10/2018 10:22

Around 1 hr. I don't like to be super rushed. Could do it in 15mins if needed which I would do if leaving super early, but that would involve no breakfast or mooching. Need to feed cats, get ready, eat, watch news usually. quick check of any important emails.

I rarely wash hair in the morning, as takes ages so better in the evening. Shower in morning therefore 5 mins max.

I think with children, they spend 10 mins faffing for every 5 mins actually doing something. So 20mins actually getting ready, easily can become 1 hr by the time you have asked them to find socks for 10 mins, and clean teeth 301 times.

ChanklyBore · 22/10/2018 10:22

Get up 6.45
Kids breakfast, coffee for me.
Sometimes shower, but I’m an evening showerer usually, so usually I wash, brush teeth. My hair is usually still wet from the previous nights shower.
Make sure the kids have brushed their teeth, washed their faces.
Send them to get dressed. Usually have an argument.
Get dressed myself and put on makeup, style hair (by which I mean ponytail, bun, pleat, twisty stuff, nothing too worrying)
Return to kids and find missing items etc.
Do their hair, x2, similar buns, twists.
Make sure they haven’t thrown all their clothes all over their rooms and spread toothpaste all over the bathroom, ie a quick tidy round upstairs.
Downstairs when they get their kits and books and letters and snacks and water bottles and whathaveyou ready and we sign all their homework planners and stuff. Sometimes do reading with one at this point if there is time as attention span is so much better in the morning.
Make sure breakfast pots are clear and try to get dishwasher and washing machine on before we leave.
Shoes, coats, bags.
Leave 7.45am.

DonnaDarko · 22/10/2018 10:25

I'm usually up by half 5

5:30 yoga for 30 minutes
6:00 coffee and breakfast, whist watching the news
6:30 wake up DS, give him a snack , usually fruit. He's 2, and will get breakfast a nursery. DP gets out of bed around the same time
7:00 - 7:15 DP comes downstairs to get breakfast. I start the mad rush to be ready by half 7
7:35 leave the house in a rush, and just about make it for my train at 7:50

Every fecking day, despite my good intentions 😂

Weepingwillows12 · 22/10/2018 10:25

If just me, 15 mins. Clothes out night before and shower in evenings not mornings (as I get up early and shower wakes the kids). Usually eat breakfast at work as I am in a couple of hours before anyone else. On school run mornings, I need at least one hour to get us all ready including toddler and 5 year old. They wake up early though so usually have longer and we get some play time in first.

WonderTweek · 22/10/2018 10:26

@GreenDinosaur I’m a quick pooper. 😃My toddler also hates it when I go to the toilet so it’s usually a 2-minute jobby including washing hands. 😂

Witchend · 22/10/2018 10:27

If just me 10 minutes if I have to. If getting children out as well more like 30 minutes. That includes waking dd2 twice (on a good day), getting ds to dress in something suitable (shorts and t-shirt on a snowy day anyone!) and other little time consuming jobs.
