to stop shopping at M and S for selling hijabs for young girls

So M and S have started to sell hijabs as part of their school uniform range...aimed at primary school children. One reviewer helpfully suggests getting the small one for a 4 year old.

I have been shopping at Marks all my adult life and have remained a faithful customer despite some dodgy clothes of late and the uninspirational Sparks card, but I think this is going to be the last straw for me.

I’d be up in arms at a man dictating what any woman wore, regardless of religion, wouldn’t you be.

I absolutely would. But the difference is you're happy to criticise Muslim women wearing hijab and make-up. Hypocrisy.

Antigon · 13/10/2018 17:35

Why do bigots love the term ‘card’ and ‘bandwagon’?

Agreed, Sloth.

Antigon · 13/10/2018 17:37

Very lazy Sloth, M&S have no business selling a hjjab as part of a school uniform when it is not, it is a religious item of clothing.

Actually, yes, they do have a business, it's their business and you don't dictate what they can sell.

dawnmist · 13/10/2018 17:44

Antigon the only hypocrite is you.....and you attack people for having an opinion but can’t give any answers.

Beesandfrogsandfleas · 13/10/2018 17:45

Wearing a turban for a Sikh woman is a totally different type of thing. It's not that common and "traditional" families have no expectation that women will cover their (uncut) hair with a turban.
Jesus was not asexual, being celibate is not the same as asexual ffs.
The Protestant church has no elevation of a celibate lifestyle, there are no monks or nuns and the ministers/vicars etc can marry (and be female, and gay in many churches).

Aeroflotgirl · 13/10/2018 17:52

Exactly Antigon, they attack people with a different opinion to theirs, but do not elaborate. No it is not a usual part of school uniform. Yes they can sell what they want, this thread if about different opinions. We get attack for not thinking like the hive mind.

SpitefulMidLifeAnimal · 13/10/2018 17:53

M&S have no business selling a hjjab as part of a school uniform when it is not

This was the first result when I Googled:

www.alkhairschool.org.uk/Uniform

Girls in years 2-6 need one for prayer. Secondary girls need one in burgundy.

Aeroflotgirl · 13/10/2018 17:53

Meant dawnmist doh, not Antigon

user1457017537 · 13/10/2018 17:54

I object because I am sick of seeing Muslim men in the latest western fashions and their wife’s and daughters trailing behind them, full-covered, despite the weather. Also Muslim men on holiday in swimming trunks sunbathing and swimming and the women sitting swathed in black robes. During the recent heatwave Muslim schoolgirls where I live were wearing thick tights, layers of clothing and their heads were covered. All to attend school, they must have been sweltering. It oppresses women

Aeroflotgirl · 13/10/2018 17:55

A non Muslim school uniform, not a Muslim school. I am sure that there are plenty of other outlets that sell hijabs.

JacquesHammer · 13/10/2018 17:56

I am sure that there are plenty of other outlets that sell hijabs

This smacks very much of “please stick to your own shops”

Confused
SpitefulMidLifeAnimal · 13/10/2018 18:00

A non Muslim school uniform, not a Muslim school

Oh yeah, I get that. But M&S have been recently applauded for their clothing range for one minority, why is this different? Especially when the first school I saw claimed they were needed for prayer time only.

dawnmist · 13/10/2018 18:16

Especially when the first school I saw claimed they were needed for prayer time only.
But that's nonsense, they aren't a religious requirement.

Rebecca36 · 13/10/2018 18:17

A hijab is not a religious item of clothing, it is a cultural or customary item of clothing.

Aeroflotgirl · 13/10/2018 18:18

Yes Spiteful, that minority were because of disability not religion. No Jacques, as I said, a hijab is a religious item of clothing, not school uniform, unless a child goes to a Muslim school.

SpitefulMidLifeAnimal · 13/10/2018 18:35

Muslim schools exist in the UK. If you attend a Muslim school, you wear a Muslim school uniform.
M&S exists in the UK. M&S sell school uniforms.
Regardless of your faith, back to school shopping is a PITA

So why shouldn't M&S make it a little easier for a Muslim mum who probably hasn't got the time (as no other mother has) to go piss-arsing round specialist shops?

Why shouldn't they cater for all minorities? After all, one of the best things about Britain is the freedom we have in religion.

FekkoTheLawyer · 13/10/2018 18:37

All of the schools DS has been at has had school uniform shops. They raise money that way.

JacquesHammer · 13/10/2018 18:37

No Jacques, as I said, a hijab is a religious item of clothing, not school uniform, unless a child goes to a Muslim school

And Muslim schools exist in the UK. So M&S are selling a uniform for a school.

Beesandfrogsandfleas · 13/10/2018 18:59

But why should Muslim primary schools need hijab as part of uniform at all? Girls who aren't of child bearing age still don't need to cover head when praying or any other time.

FekkoTheLawyer · 13/10/2018 20:23

They are copying hard-liners from ME. This wasn't the case before.

Oliversmumsarmy · 13/10/2018 20:41

Did notice the boys Islamic cap was optional but the girls headwear was obligatory

fredperry18 · 13/10/2018 20:48

its not anyones business how other peoples children dress. unless it is not legal.

anyway the reason for the headscarf for girls is that in islam if they are to read or hold the Quran they do need to cover their head. boys too have to wear caps. and often these girls are going to religious lessons usually at a mosque where it is also obligatory for all to cover their head.

the Quran does not disallow the wearing of the headscarf (or the face veil) Quran does ask both women and men to wear loose clothing and cover their bodies (for men specifically from below the waist to ankles) - islam is not approving of public nudity.

the sole reason why media have gone in heavily is that it disenfranchises muslim women, it others muslims and hopes that with enough of a public outcry m&s will remove it from sale.

muslim women are the primary victims of gratuitous abuse, both physical and verbal, and its on the increase. all enabled by the media.

fredperry18 · 13/10/2018 20:50

its obligatory when in mosque, reading or holding the Quran.

there are dress rules for males.

interestingly in uk the burka-face veil is estimated to be worn by ~1000 individuals, 2000 in france and several tens in denmark etc

user1457017537 · 13/10/2018 20:51

Perhaps they wouldn’t get abuse if they didn’t make little girls wear restrictive items of clothing that completely covers them up. Or are Muslim litttle girls not supposed to play and have fun

FuckCancer · 13/10/2018 20:53

I'm Irish and they started to sell Potato Cakes.
Fuck me backwards and call me Rupert; but I'm OK with ANY bespoke religious wear or foods.
