AIBU?

AIBU to wonder why people always do this on MN?

SquirreledIn · 09/10/2018 13:21

I'm talking about people who always suggest the opposite of what the OP asked for?

Example: Can anyone please suggest some old fashioned names for our baby girl? We don't want her to have a name beginning with B but any other letter is fine.
Other user. Bethany? Bella? Bailey?

Or someone asks what they should order from the Chinese. There's always someone who says make a salad. It's much healthier.

It happens with holidays too, in fact almost every topic. Someone will ask for restaurant suggestions in Tenerife and some bright spark will say. I don't know. I've never been. I wouldn't touch the place with a barge pole. I only ever go to a lovely little gite in Provence.

Why do they do this? Do they really think that they're being helpful or are they just trying to be unpleasant? I'm leaning towards the latter most of the time. Ok, perhaps in the first example they just didn't read the OP correctly but I so often see posts similar to the other examples and it's frustrating.

Oh Lord the apologies for the DM link - who cares??? Loads of people read the DM, the MN obsession with not wanting to be seen to read it is pathetic. Who gives a stuff what anonymous people on the internet, who you are never likely to meet, think about your choice of newspaper.

The 'didn't want to read and run', I always, always want to ask why? Is there absolutely nothing you could say to either comfort or advise the OP? You are right Warpdrive it is just virtue signalling - look at meee, I'm so nice.

"I've had my rescue cat/dog for 9 years". Why are you still referring to them as a rescue pet? There really is no need to sound so smug. Well done you on rescuing animals and still letting everyone know every single time.

another one, thread is 29 pages long, 700+ posts, the stpry has significantly, moved on, and someone comes on and says - I have only read the original post but.....

RTFT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(this may have just happened on a thread I'm watching)

Some of these I do get why - I didn't want to read and run- someone alone and worried has posted for help and no-one has replied. help needed is beyond your scope (eg asking about medical, benefits claims, or something specific needing actual knowledge)
not read and run= you are not alone, we are here and listening, just don;t have the expertise you need. Also it bumps the thread so it might get seen.

(Every time I read @GunpowderGelatine, I go "Dynamite in a laser beam, Guaranteed to blow your mind". Every time!)

Am I the only one to open a thread with a title like op's in a state of mild nervousness, just in case I am horribly guilty of one the thread crimes that are bound to be mentioned?

There's always someone accusing a poster of being a drama queen when they're really distressed about something. Talk about kicking someone when they're down. It's so unnecessary. I find myself muttering darkly at the screen in a "FFS WHY did you bother posting" kind of way. What do they think they're contributing?

"By the way op its COULD HAVE not COULD OF" You dipstick.

Weight loss threads are rife with this too.

Someone wants advice on losing weight or support from people who have done this or know how it feels to be overweight - cue endless replies from someone who has always been a size 6/8 and runs marathons before their light, nutritious breakfast.

'Just eat less and move more fatso'

On the ‘can you guess the sex’ scan picture threads, a brilliant and very original poster will always comment ‘it’s a baby’

Get that poster their own comedy show!

There’s a thread on Chat right now which has run to 24 pages, yet someone has responded to the days old OP.

Those posters should just get an automatic 7 day ban!

Cleaners must come free with a box of cornflakes in MN World because everyone and I mean everyone can just get one.

Lol the pointless arguing from the OP
“AIBU to expect my childminder to feed my DD nothing but edible gold leaf cupcakes dipped in rose petals for a snack?”
“Yes!”
“No I’m not!”

Oh God, yes. ‘Haven’t read the whole thread, but my opinion is far too vital not to add, even though 93 people have probably said the exact same ducking thing on the 27 pages of replies I’ve ignored’.

I also hate the moonlight MDs. I see it all the time when people are unsure of where to go. It's actually terrifying.

OP: I've fallen very badly on my leg. My ankle is very swollen and bruised I feel sick from pain and I can't bear weight on it at all. Should I go to A&E?

MN: absolutely not. A&E is for life threatening emergencies only. Do you know there is an NHS crisis because of time wasters like you. Call your GP in a week and take one paracetamol. When I broke both my legs I had to the school run for three weeks before I would go get seen - you're fine.

Gives me RAGE

I'm always amazed at how many people on MN have cleaners. I don't know a single person who has one, unless they're elderly and it's part of a care package, and I live in a 'posh' leafy suburb full of professionals.(I'm neither posh nor professional)

I'm not claiming that people shouldn't have cleaners. I'm just amazed that the majority of MN appear to have one.

If we're discussing OPs too I love the ones who clearly know that they aren't being unreasonable but who just want to be told how wonderful they are.

AIBU? My elderly neighbour fell in her garden today. WIBU to have helped her up, made her a cup of tea and chatted to her?

I'm worried that everyone is going to be talking about me and that I should really have kicked her in the shin, grabbed her handbag, run away leaving her lying on the ground and booked a month long cruise with the contents of her bank account?

Saw a great one the other day

OP - where online can I get a Christmas Eve box from?

Response - I've no idea what a Christmas Eve box is.

Err so why respond if A you don't know where the op can get one from and B you don't have a bloody clue what one is anyway

See also “my dd is 5 and at half term I plan to do some craft activities and baking. We may have a couple of hours at soft play or go for a walk and snuggle up at bedtime with an improving book from the library. AIBU to not go to a huge theme park every day and enrol her on a hot air ballooning course?” Followed by loads of people saying how lovely it sounds. It does sound lovely but who needs to ask if it’s ok?

How about: the thread was started 5 days ago and there have been hundreds of responses since, including fifteen updates from the OP, but I'm sure that (a) the original situation is still the one everyone's discussing and (b) nobody's suggested cancelling the cheque yet, so...

Report
ThePants999 · 09/10/2018 23:41

(btw, I appreciate the irony in posting that when I'm not the first person to make that point here Wink)

Speaking of cancel the cheque, I'd like to know why people always start threads with "NC for this, but penis beaker, elderly Korean lady, etc etc". Do they think that people in AIBU only respond to established posters, and if people don't recognise your name and think you're new around here, they won't bother replying?

Arf @CluedoAddict
Bethany is in the bible so it is very much an old name.

Am enjoying all the other examples, too.

It would be good if there were an open palm ✋ emoji to use in answer to these types. (Could be interpreted as 'stop' or a 'slap upside the head' - either one being appropriate. Smile)
But too risky not appropriate for MN, I suppose.

I love the ones which say 'if you are five foot and 12 stone what size clothing are you?" and someone pipes up saying I'm five foot 11, 8 stone and a size 10. Well done love but that's not really relevant!

Also...OP says, 'I need to vent as I can't talk to anyone in real life about this'... Poster, 'well no wonder your life's shit if you're always this aggressive in real life.' Aaargh! Of course people say stuff on the internet that they wouldn't say at home...that's the point of the internet.
