AIBU?

To say Four Weddings and a Funeral is CRAP

I've just watched Four Weddings and a Funeral for the first time on Netflix.

It's terrible! Like I genuinely don't understand how it's so well reviewed? Some of the characters are good but there's so many of them it's hard to keep track, and the whole things revolves and Charles pinning for a woman with whom he's had one conversation and slept with twice.

She cheats on her fiancé with Charles, is super flippant with feelings, ruins his wedding and he still loves her?! Meanwhile he hurts every woman he dates and doesn't seem to understand the concept of an alarm clock.

Am I missing something?! What other films are overrated - shall I even bother with When Harry Met Sally?

Stick to Disney animated films.

I loved it when it first came out, thought it was fabulous. I recently watched it with my teens and thought it was dull and dated.

It's being remade you know. Mindy Kaling is doing it. Think it's a series though.

But it's great apart from Andie Macdowell and the "is it raining" line.

I don't think it was supposed to be high brow art....its a rom-com! Very 'of it's time' - frothy, light, fun.

YANBU to say that, if that is what you feel.
I've not watched it for years, but I have memories of it being a great film in it's day though.

Notting Hill is cringe but would be massively improved by just removing The Brownie Scene.

I watched it on Friday and really loved it all over again. I yearned to look like Kristen Scott Thomas. I loved the "It's you Charlie" bit and where Scarlett is under the table explaining why she's single.

YANBU.

The characters are full of stereotypes, because the film as a whole is (in my view) marketed at Americans by using the American image of the UK. Posh Oxbridge students driving classic British cars, going to balls wearing waistcoats, quoting Yeates, bijou hotels in old English manor houses, nice old churches, nice accents, and of course some swearing because it's just a bit naughty.

Nil by Mouth is a much better film.

Love Actually is the worst. The much linked to on MN article is amazing. About Time is the best of the 4 big Curtis romcoms.

Notting Hill is also excellent. 🙃

It's very much of its time. I thought it was great when it first came out and I was a teenager - although even then I thought Charles would be much better off with Fi than Carrie.

I think some of these films don't really age well so if you're watching years later they're not as good. That said, I love FWAAF and would watch just for the 'Don't be ridiculous! Charles died 20 years ago!' bit.

YABU. I loved it; it was very amusing and lighthearted (mostly) but I haven't watched it for years so it's probably dated.

I don't need it to be high brow art (believe me!) but as a Rom com it fails its main test - I am not swooning for Charles!

4 Weddings is worth one watch only, same as Notting Hill. Love Actually is just awful, and irritating.

Also if you don't want to weep at John Hannah reading that WH Auden poem, you are dead inside. DEAD I TELL THEE!

That's true - that guy was brilliant.

"Bride or groom"

If you can get past That truly dreadful line about it raining it’s a great film- in fact it’s one of my favourites! As someone else said, nottinghill is shite though.
