To say Four Weddings and a Funeral is CRAP

I've just watched Four Weddings and a Funeral for the first time on Netflix.

It's terrible! Like I genuinely don't understand how it's so well reviewed? Some of the characters are good but there's so many of them it's hard to keep track, and the whole things revolves and Charles pinning for a woman with whom he's had one conversation and slept with twice.

She cheats on her fiancé with Charles, is super flippant with feelings, ruins his wedding and he still loves her?! Meanwhile he hurts every woman he dates and doesn't seem to understand the concept of an alarm clock.

Am I missing something?! What other films are overrated - shall I even bother with When Harry Met Sally?

Yeah. I could never see the fuss with 4 weddings in the 90s when it came out.

I also agree Love actually is a pile of weak boring shit. If you can, I’d recommend watching ‘this years love’. Amazing, grittier and more realistic than Love actually, but loosely follows the same premise. Kathy Burke is in it to, which is a bonus!

Petalflowers · 08/10/2018 21:11

Michael Praed as Robin Hood. .

motortroll · 08/10/2018 21:13

Of course it's shit, as is Notting Hill but still love them!!

MudCity · 08/10/2018 21:14

Agree with previous posters. Andie McDowell ruined an otherwise fantastic film. She came across as brittle and it seemed a bit tokenistic having her in the film. She was wrong for the part and I could never see what Charles saw in her. Wrong, wrong, wrong and unlikeable.

Kristin Scott Thomas on the other hand was fabulous.

PawneeParksDept · 08/10/2018 21:15

I'll not hear a word against Robin Hood : Prince Of Thieves even if those words are true Grin

Amazing. Plus St. Alan is in it.

Starlings27 · 08/10/2018 21:17

They’re both horrible people who’d spoil another couple. I still love the film though.

Ali1cedowntherabbithole · 08/10/2018 21:18

YANBU. I only like Hugh Grant as Daniel Cleaver and the bloke in About a Boy. Both pretty unsavoury characters grin

Can I add Paddington 2 to the list? Hugh Grant is so much better when he is a villain.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 08/10/2018 21:18

I'm with you, op. I've never understood the hype at all. It's one of those irritating films that you have to like otherwise youre a crank

LaurieMarlow · 08/10/2018 21:22

YABU

I just rewatched it (after a gap of 20 odd years) and was stunned at how sharp and funny it is.

A few observations though ...

God they don't wait around when it comes to getting married. Couples meet and 3 months later it's 'I do'. Is this something posh people do or is it just for the plotting? actually I know the answer

Charles treats Duckface so appallingly he makes Ross Geller look like a Knight in Shining Armour.

I found the eclectic friendship group somewhat far fetched. Maybe there was more social class mixing back in the 90s, but nowadays I can't imagine a group of tight friends that would include Fiona/Scarlett/Gareth.

however, the original and best. I'm not a fan of the rest of Curtis' oeuvre. I genuinely can't bear Notting Hill.

reallyanotherone · 08/10/2018 21:31

The only think that spoilt that film for me was Andie MacDowel. I can’t watch her!!! And WHY would ANYONE fancy her when they could have Kristin Scott Thomas?!?!

I really don’t get Andie Mcdowell. I read a book at some point before fwaaf where they were casting a film and discussing the heroine- a model- getting the part and whether she could act. The line was “we could get Andie McDowell, a supermodel AND and actress”. Then the film came out and they made such a huge thing of her and I still couldn’t see it.

For me fwaaf is about the minor characters. John Hannah.

Aintnothingbutaheartache · 08/10/2018 21:32

I would have actually preferred to see a dolphin play Andie MacDowels role in 4W&AF.
And they are total bastards..........apparently

Elderflower14 · 08/10/2018 21:34

I love it just for the scene when the lady learns BSL and tells the deaf man "I think you're very mice!!!" 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂

ChairmanMiaow123 · 08/10/2018 21:36

Ronnie, you’ll love HG in A Very English Scandal then! Smile
He was the epitome of a bastard in that.

RonniePickering · 08/10/2018 21:36

Dolphins are bastards?! Why on earth are they portraying themselves differently?

iamaLeafontheWind · 08/10/2018 21:37

Does anyone else think that the drunk guy in the bar when Hugh is first trying to pull Andie is a bit err, well, isn’t the line ‘buggered me senseless but taught me a think about life’? Just WTAF?

RonniePickering · 08/10/2018 21:38

Ooh haven't watched that Chairman, will give it a go.

Ohyesiam · 08/10/2018 21:39

It’s not as emotionally manipulative as Love Actually, but it is pretty dire.

Rockbird · 08/10/2018 21:40

Andie MacDowell is the worst actress in the entire history of the world. Very beautiful but an appalling actress. And she was even more appalling in FWAAF. Quite like the film other than that although with hindsight a few of the characters piss me off.

AnneLovesGilbert · 08/10/2018 21:40

YABU. It’s brilliant and it’s far too long since I watched it.

While we’re here, why on earth did Kristin end up with Prince Charles?! Always baffled me.

Rockbird · 08/10/2018 21:41

But HG was fab in Paddington 2.

Aaaahfuck · 08/10/2018 21:42

Yeah it's totally over rated! Hugh Grant is just really posh and annoying in it. The rest of them are twats.

Rebecca36 · 08/10/2018 21:43

You're not at all unreasonable. I saw it maybe twenty years ago and some of it since on TV. There were some funny bits but I thought it was unbelievably shallow!

JellyBears · 08/10/2018 21:44

Go wash your mouth out with soap and water!!!!

vampirethriller · 08/10/2018 21:49

YANBU. Can't see the appeal either. Notting Hill is even worse and Love Actually is the worst film I ever paid to see.

Aintnothingbutaheartache · 08/10/2018 21:53

I have to disagree about Love Actually tho, loved that film! Especially Emma Thompson when she finds the locket and then gets the CD for Christmas 😫 she is a STONKING actress , when dick of a DH says “”oh god, I am so in the wrong. The classic fool”
She replies “Yes, but you’ve also made a fool out of me, and you’ve made the life I live foolish too”
Classic!
