To say Four Weddings and a Funeral is CRAP

I've just watched Four Weddings and a Funeral for the first time on Netflix.

It's terrible! Like I genuinely don't understand how it's so well reviewed? Some of the characters are good but there's so many of them it's hard to keep track, and the whole things revolves and Charles pinning for a woman with whom he's had one conversation and slept with twice.

She cheats on her fiancé with Charles, is super flippant with feelings, ruins his wedding and he still loves her?! Meanwhile he hurts every woman he dates and doesn't seem to understand the concept of an alarm clock.

Am I missing something?! What other films are overrated - shall I even bother with When Harry Met Sally?

YANBU- I think it is a pile of crap too

TheNavigator · 08/10/2018 21:59

It is crap but I love it. Simon Callow is great: 'it's bloody Brigadoon!' and miming throwing up when the couple break into 'Can't smile without you' with guitar and simpering.

Celebelly · 08/10/2018 22:00

I adore Love Actually. I think there's stuff about it that's problematic but I don't even care because I

DerelictWreck · 08/10/2018 22:00

She seemed a bit wet - she didn't need the rain to be drippy

Grin Grin Grin

For those of you who say you love the film - do you really appreciate a love story thats a guy sleeping with a woman in a relationship twice (neither of them mentioning that fact!) and then agreeing to 'not get married'? I reeeeeally don't get how's it's a ROMcom?!

On the other hand, I totally bought the love Angus and Matthew had Sad and Matthew reading stop the clocks, with Charle's softly crying was horrible Sad

I love the fact that Amber Rudd (the Home Secretary one) is on the credits as 'Aristocracy Wrangler'.

I also very much love 'fuckadoodledoo'.

DerelictWreck · 08/10/2018 22:02

I have to disagree about Love Actually tho, loved that film! Especially Emma Thompson when she finds the locket and then gets the CD for Christmas 😫 she is a STONKING actress , when dick of a DH says “”oh god, I am so in the wrong. The classic fool”
She replies “Yes, but you’ve also made a fool out of me, and you’ve made the life I live foolish too”
Classic!

Agree! Plus that Joni Mitchell song is perfect.

Wasn't sure I was brave enough to hate FW&AF and profess my love for Love Actually on one thread through Blush

Emma Thompson and Alan Rickman are so fantastic. She breaks my heart every time I watch it and just want to yell at the screen when he's buying that bloody necklace.

Also 'America, watch out, here comes Colin Frissell...AND HE'S GOT A BIG KNOB' cracks me up every time.

Liam Neeson too when he breaks down and Emma Thompson is there. God I'm making myself all emotional again, and it's only partly pregnancy hormones.

MrsSarahSiddons · 08/10/2018 22:05

For all those criticising HG, he totally OWNED the Jeremy Thorpe role in A Very English Scandal. I think he has really matured beautifully as an actor, and I also think when younger he was adopting a persona most of the time - a very successful one, as it turned out, commercially - but now he has SO much potential as an older actor and I am looking forward to seeing what he does next.

tigercub50 · 08/10/2018 22:10

Sorry but I love “ Love Actually “! And “4 weddings”!

Sodavod · 08/10/2018 22:12

YANBU its total Shite.

thisneverendingsummer · 08/10/2018 22:14

Yep, defo a case of the emporer's new clothes.

My best friend's wedding, and Muriel's wedding are waaaaaaaaay better. Both funny, heartwarming, and touching.

FWAAF is a 4 out of 10 at best.

PierreBezukov · 08/10/2018 22:15

Love Actually is appalling. It's forced, contrived humour and emotional manipulation the whole way through. I couldn't stand it. There is one good scene - the Emma Thompson one - but the rest of the film is utter s*

MrsRhettButler · 08/10/2018 22:16

YABVU but I'm very glad to hear it's on Netflix so thank you Grin

PierreBezukov · 08/10/2018 22:16

I agree, Muriel's wedding is much funnier and cleverer.

PawneeParksDept · 08/10/2018 22:17

To be fair although Emma Thompson's brilliance is indisputable in those scenes they are the only good bit in Love Actually the rest is dire.

FlotSHAMnJetson · 08/10/2018 22:17

I love that film.

On the other hand, not keen on dolphins either, I have it on good authority they are the rapists of the sea.

thisneverendingsummer · 08/10/2018 22:18

Oh I do like the actors and actresses in it, and HG is fab. Just didn't like FWAAF.

Welshwabbit · 08/10/2018 22:19

YABVVU! I love FWAAF. Obviously Andie MacDowell is utterly terrible in it, but that just highlights how awesome everyone else is. Almost every scene makes me laugh, apart from the funeral bit, which makes me cry. Oh and the bit when Fiona tells Charles it's always been him and "Friends isn't bad, friends is quite something". The original source of my massive KST crush.

I also quite like Love Actually. But not nearly as much.

LucyAutumn · 08/10/2018 22:19

Yesssss. This was me last Thursday! Watched it because I thought it was supposed to be an old classic, ended up pulling a face like this Hmm most of the way through.

...there were a few Grin moments.

PawneeParksDept · 08/10/2018 22:19

There was a thread recently about Muriel's Wedding were we discussed how actually it's not funny at all it's deeply sad, and people didn't see that at the time due to their age

Ilovechocolatebuttons · 08/10/2018 22:20

Oh this was so cruel! Me and my sister love the film, and when she got married she deliberately picked the same reading the boring man reads from Corinthians for my husband to read. We were in hysterics all you can see on the video is our shoulders shuddering trying to keep our laugh in when he had To say I become clanging symbol or a sounding brass, still tickles me to this day when I hear it! He was giving us daggers :)

DuggeesWoggle · 08/10/2018 22:21

Jack and Sarah is another good romcom (although very sad too) from that era and not mentioned much these days. Ian McKellen's in it, as well as plenty of other great actors. Not a massive fan of Richard E Grant but liked him in this.

Was that a Richard Curtis film? Seems to be of the same ilk?

tillytrotter1 · 08/10/2018 22:22

Wouldn't life be boring if we all liked the same? Personally I enjoyed it.
People get horrified, and a bit nasty, when I say I think Only Fools and Horses was dire rubbish and I've seen more Star Wars in the queue for the ride at Disney than I've seen on the screen, but those are my choices.

PierreBezukov · 08/10/2018 22:23

Yes, Muriel's Wedding is funny and deeply sad at the same time. It has a depth that FWAAF or any Curtis film doesn't come close to.

thisneverendingsummer · 08/10/2018 22:24

I like Love Actually, but yeah it is a bit overrated. Maybe a 6 out of 10. The 2 porn stars bit is awful and makes me cringe (Martin Hobbit and Joanna Page.)
