To ask what temp your house is?

This is an annual argument for us starting around this time of yr.

The central heating is set at 20 degrees. The thermometer in the hall reads 72 degrees Fahrenheit. I am a bit warm but I can cope just about with a light skirt and t shirt on. DH is cold and is wearing a long sleeved t shirt with a chunky jumper and fleece lounge trousers, socks and slippers.

I know he is cold. But he insists that the house is cold whilst I maintain it isn't. 72 degrees just isn't cold is it? When he is at work I have the windows open for air flow but when he is home he has them closed and turns the heating up.

How can he be cold? Why is he cold? And do others have this problem? He is retiring soon and will want to spend Jan-March with the heating up and the windows closed all the time Confused and I will feel suffocated. Anyone else reached a successful compromise?

21 degrees

farfallarocks · 07/10/2018 23:32

I put an extra jumper on!!

Notcontent · 07/10/2018 23:36

Well, I usually set my heating to about 20 but I still have to wear a woolly jumper to keep warm. Also, my house is very draughty, so often it feels colder than shown by the thermostat.

Titsywoo · 07/10/2018 23:38

Mine is set to 20 and it is really toasty warm. My house is very well insulated though.

nokidshere · 07/10/2018 23:38

@farfallarocks at 21 degrees you put another jumper on? So I'm not unreasonable asking him to put something else on?

Ours is set to 20 as well but still chilly in some rooms as we have crap double glazing. The bit in the hall by the thermostat is nice and warm though, I might start hanging out there more Grin

Just a random thought- could you or your partner have a thyroid problem? It does affect your perception of temperature.
I was always cold, fleeces or thermals in summer, both in winter. My partner was frequently overheated.
Had my thyroid checked (cos my DF had a thyroid problem with similar symptoms) .
Now we are both warm most of the time 😀
Current house temperature a comfortable 17 degrees.

steff13 · 07/10/2018 23:39

We're experiencing second summer here, apparently, so we have the A/C on. It's set at 74°F.

crocsaretoocoolforschool · 07/10/2018 23:39

I have no idea -my heating is either on or off and there's no thermostat

But one teen dd has spent the day in fleecy pjs, buried under a blanket, sat on the sofa complaining its cold

The other teen dd has been wandering around in a bra and shorts asking if the heating is on because she's boiling

So I'm guessing the temp is about right

MrsGollach · 07/10/2018 23:41

23 or 24

HicDraconis · 07/10/2018 23:41

22 degrees I’d be opening windows! Our house varies from 16 degrees during winter nights to mid twenties and higher over the summer (solar passive heating). In winter we occasionally need the fire on in the early mornings/evenings, in summer the doors and windows are always open.

The rule in our house is it’s as cold as the warmest person thinks it is. The cold person can put on extra layers or have a hot drink or cuddle a dog, but the warmer person would find it harder to cool down.

I’m always the cold one, I drink a lot of tea and do a lot of knitting!

My heating is set about 18-20 during the day. I turn it down to 16 at night (pre DC I turned it down to 12). But I grew up in a house heated by a single coal fire in the living room, and we often could only afford to put the fire on in the evening, so I’m not used to it being hot. DH in the other hand had two parents in middle class jobs and grew up in a centrally heated home. So he always feels cold and whinges if he can’t wear just a T-shirt indoors.

categed · 07/10/2018 23:45

Normally at this time of year it sits between 15-18 in winter when the heating goes on it will be around 14-19. Except on mondays when it is at 20 as inlaws loom after lids and fil can no longer be comfortable in less 😁

Charlottesshoezzzz · 07/10/2018 23:46

New ish build house here. Thermostat set to 19 degrees, love walking round bare foot in mini skirt & t-shirt, Just had gorgeous thick new carpet fitted & am relishing the feel of new carpet on feet & how much warmer my house feels overall : )

KlutzyDraconequus · 07/10/2018 23:46

18c seems to be my comfort zone.
I like to have a slight children and wear a shirt / hoody.
Some people have their houses so warm u feel stifled and annoyed..

Charlottesshoezzzz · 07/10/2018 23:49

Just to add I never turn thermostat up past 20 even In freezing winter as I feel too hot & suffocated.

Fatasfook · 07/10/2018 23:49

Right now mine is like a sauna

shockedballoon · 07/10/2018 23:51

19 in morn or eve. Normal unheated house temp is around 16.5-17.5 at this time of year. Sometimes I don't put the heating on and just use the fire in the lounge as I like a cool bedroom. Though when MIL& PIL or DM stay I'll let it get to 20.

incorruptibledream · 07/10/2018 23:52

It doesn’t matter what the weather is doing our heating is set at ‘Barbados’ all year round - I know we should just ‘put a jumper on’ but fuck that shit.

Brilliant 🤣🤣

Haberpop · 07/10/2018 23:53

16° for most of the house, we have just started lighting the fire when we are home so the living room is warmer than the rest of the house.

icclemunchy · 08/10/2018 00:07

Thermostat is set to 20, current temp is about 22 downstairs. I'm cold and have my fleecy dressingown on OH is in a t-shirt and pants.

That said I have health conditions which get worse when I'm cold. I wouldn't want the room temp much higher though, I like to be able to breathe!

JustBeingJobless · 08/10/2018 00:17

Thermostat is set at 18. At the minute, it’s 21 in my living room, heating goes off at 10pm then back on at 6am. I’ve got a window cracked open so goodness knows why it’s still so warm in here. I’m wearing short sleeved pj’s and I’m not cold at all. I can’t stand being too warm though.

SuchAToDo · 08/10/2018 00:26

Don't know what our heating is set to, but I've been putting it on twice a day (I'm in uk) as the house feels chilly otherwise, we have it on for an hour mid afternoon and an hour before bedtime ,

SenecaFalls · 08/10/2018 00:30

It's still hot here in Florida. When using the AC (like now), we keep it set at 74. When we need to put heat on, we set it at 70.
