To ask what temp your house is?

This is an annual argument for us starting around this time of yr.

The central heating is set at 20 degrees. The thermometer in the hall reads 72 degrees Fahrenheit. I am a bit warm but I can cope just about with a light skirt and t shirt on. DH is cold and is wearing a long sleeved t shirt with a chunky jumper and fleece lounge trousers, socks and slippers.

I know he is cold. But he insists that the house is cold whilst I maintain it isn't. 72 degrees just isn't cold is it? When he is at work I have the windows open for air flow but when he is home he has them closed and turns the heating up.

How can he be cold? Why is he cold? And do others have this problem? He is retiring soon and will want to spend Jan-March with the heating up and the windows closed all the time Confused and I will feel suffocated. Anyone else reached a successful compromise?

It's 16.5 in my house right now. No heating on yet until it gets considerably colder. I make everyone put jumpers and thick socks on before I'll consider putting the heating on - anyone sitting in a thin t-shirt and bare feet moaning they are freezing gets short shrift!

If I had unlimited funds and the energy used wasn't damaging the planet, I'd probably aim for around 19/20 degrees during the day and 16 at night. I struggle in houses/offices that are too hot, I feel like I can't breathe when we stay at my parents' house (they prefer 25 degrees even at night so I have to open windows and sleep on top of the duvet there!).

I think winter comes to different parts of the country earlier. We are so far north, it feels like it's already here!

TheKitchenWitch · 08/10/2018 14:42

We have a high efficient low energy new house, floor heating everywhere powered by burning wooden pellets. Anything under 23° is too cold imo. I don’t want to be dressed like I’m outside when I’m in my house!

lubeybooby · 08/10/2018 15:18

about 22c is ideal for me but I will often keep to 20c and sling a jumper and big fluffy socks on

mehithappens · 08/10/2018 15:39

21 all day but at moment only comes on first thing, after overnight is set to 16.

Generally house holds heat very well but is a new build. However the double glazing vents let in so much cold air sometimes I have to click the heating up a few degrees for a blast.

The prob is then upstairs gets boiling as we are tiles downstairs.

bridgetreilly · 08/10/2018 15:43

Get him some wool socks and thermal underwear. But also, I think the onus is on him - it's much easier for one person to warm up with hot drinks, hot water bottles etc, than for one person to cool down once they've taken their jumper off.

Celebelly · 08/10/2018 15:46

Our thermostat is generally set to 19ish during day, and 17ish overnight. It's only just started clicking on the last week or so. I prefer bedroom cooler than living areas tho so we usually have radiator in there either off and just rely on heat from below or on very low. I'm in north of Scotland so we do get it quite cold here, but we're in a new build that is pretty snug.

Bubbaduck · 08/10/2018 15:49

Don't have the heating on during the day then 20-22 in the evening at the moment. DH complains that's too hot most nights so our bedroom radiator is turned off with one window slightly open on vent for airflow as the heat really sticks in our room.

I prefer a cooler house but not cold. DH would happily never turn the heating on and just have everyone sitting in multiple layers.

My DM is the opposite of us though, always has her thermostat turned up to 30 even through the summer, and the fire will be on from around September all the way through to spring, depending on the weather each autumn/spring. She's always been like that so it's not an age thing with her, it was a nightmare as a teen, if I didn't have my bedroom window open overnight, even in winter, I'd wake up with a headache from the heat. She also has these awful polyester duvet covers so if we stay over at DPs house then we have to take our own covers or we just wake up drenched in sweat.

NoWayNoHow · 08/10/2018 15:56

Thermostat set at 17-18 degrees on a timer so it only goes on in the morning and evening if it gets below that temp. If I'm a bit chilly, I put on a fleece and socks and slippers and huddle under a blanket to watch TV in the evening. I don't see the point of wasting money and energy when I can easily keep warm in other ways.

steppemum · 08/10/2018 16:12

A lot depends on what you are doing.
Sitting watching TV, and you need ot to be warmer. Doing housework, and you need much colder.

I think the advised is about 22 fro evening (ie the TV watching) and less during day. Overnight it is not unreasonable to have heating off (or on frost guard)

If it is on 21, and you are wearing what I call winter clothes (long sleeves, jumper, socks and shoes/slippers) and are still cold, see a doctor

calabresechicken · 08/10/2018 16:19

A/c set to 26. I'd like it a little cooler but its too expensive.

ginghamstarfish · 08/10/2018 16:21

about 17 during the day, down to 15/16 at night in winter. Hate being hot and would rather put extra layer on.

LBOCS2 · 08/10/2018 17:35

Ours is set to 15, but I haven't actually turned it on yet - it comes on for an hour or so in the morning and then a couple of hours in the afternoon/eve. I run hot and am very grumpy if I'm too warm, so everyone else wears jumpers and warm socks indoors (and puts a blanket on their laps when they're on the sofa).

Purpleartichoke · 08/10/2018 17:39

20 year round. If I lived alone it would be lower, but 20 mostly keeps the heat hives at bay and I try to compromise.
